- VideoGamer (70/100): "James Cameron's Avatar: The Game is easily one of the best movie licensed games I've ever played, but at the same time it's not good enough to stand alone as a must-own title. While the presentation is great and the combat generally enjoyable, the missions leave a lot to be desired - and there's little of the sense of wonder that the movie promises."
- IGN (68/100): "There's nothing disastrous here, and the RDA shooter side of things performs well enough to be occasionally enjoyable. The quest design, including both the main and side tasks, is about as generic as they come. Go here, collect this, plant these bombs, or kill this and then return to me."
- Game Informer (65/100): "These shortcomings are a shame considering the game's interesting gameplay twists. Avatar features a solid RPG element that unlocks new armor and upgraded weapons at a steady pace. Players also unlock new skills (i.e. buffs) that help spice up combat a little, but can't overcome the gameplay imbalances."
- GameSpot (55/100): "It's not a bad game, and portions of it are competent, if not quite remarkable. But Avatar wears thin quickly, and the story is too fragile to compensate for the deficiencies.
Metareview: James Cameron's Avatar

Here's a dreary, uncomfortably true comment about the state of movie-licensed games: When we saw the average that James Cameron's Avatar currently sports on Metacritic, our first thought was, "Wow, a 65, not bad!" Here's how it was sized up by a few outlets:

I played the demo and I was quite impressed, it's not a must-buy like Gears of War but it's up there in the genre.

Cameron's been trying to make this movie for many, many years and he finally succeeded as he was waiting for technology to catch up. I think he's going to find that the world would have welcomed this movie10 years ago, but I see nothing about it that makes me want to even rent it. As for the game, chock it up to Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie. It's there to catch a few extra bucks and that's about it.
I don't want to play a movie, I'd rather play the experience of going to movie as it would be the best game ever! Will I find parking? Will I get a ticket? How can I get through the popcorn line faster? Will I get a seat? Will I sit on something wet and icky? Will I have to take a leak every 5 minutes because I'm drinking a small reservoir of soda? Oh the possibilities!

I saw this at PAX West this year and was unimpressed, even with the 3D screen.
Although I almost though of yanking the 60" Panny plasma display and run back out the car, but I don't think I'd have made it very far.
I honestly think that 3D gaming is far, far from the mainstream. The 3D looked OKAY there, but they had special, incredibly expensive wireless stereoscopic glasses that were uncomfortable.
Ooh, although... 3D game of Titanic? Awesome.

I find myself wondering why these adaptions always end up being so mediocre. Presumably it's because they don't have complete creative freedom. But neither did Bethesda with Fallout 3, which to me proves that it can be done.

If the Game Sucks that means the Movie Should be Good...

The ratings for the game are not impressive but because of all of the hype the movie is getting, I still think this game will end up selling out, no? I am really surprised the game didn't score better because I have been watching some of the behind-the-scenes clips from the Avatar movie like this one and it looks like it would translate perfectly as a game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pqVZa1IJso
I mean LOOK at these colors, the vehicles, the effects - how can the game NOT be awesome?!
