A CVG source (singular) claims that Logitech is developing a UMD drive add-on for the PSP Go. The source has neither price nor release information, merely stating that the "only problem is that it'll make the PSP a little bulky." Logitech's UK office told the outlet that it's unaware of such a device and that it "may be something the US office is working on." We've contacted both Sony and Logitech for more concrete information.
Beyond the fact that such an add-on would undermine what the Go represents (not quite the "only" problem, is it?), the likely price of such a device, in addition to the base cost of the PSP Go, would not compare well to the already lower cost of a regular PSP with UMD drive. Now, if the add-on could "install" your old games, that would be something ...
Update: Logitech tells Joystiq: "This is not something that our company is working on."

Are you KIDDING!?
Sony makes a system that you don't agree with on a base level.
Logitech makes a peripheral that lets you use UMD's - the proprietary format tha SONY THEMSELVES came up with a few years ago and already no longer supports - charging you money for said peripheral (obviously).
So now you are going to buy Sony's new overpriced system AND give Logitech money just so you can do what your PSP3000 already does!? Everything cool, buddy?

Their new handheld doesn't play them. I know they have a 'dual platform strategy' or whatever, but that's always bullshit. Just like the DS and the GBA, right? Or the DSi and the likely-soon-to-be-axed DS Lite? It's all marketing bullshit. UMD is dumb, Sony knows it, and now they want to ditch it - all to the detriment of consumers who supported it.

please answer these for me because I don't have a PSP or any UMDs. so I really don't know.
Can I hook up a 3000 to a TV and play it with a PS3 controller?
Can I then, on the same 3000 take the UMD drive and make it smaller so it fits in my pocket for when I leave the house?

I see what you did there. But the PSP is not that much bigger than the Go is to justify the price hike, to me. I have no problem with the lack of a UMD drive, to be honest. I think it's shitty what they did to the install base, but I don't have one at all yet so I'd consider the Go.
But it has less moving parts and arguably LESS functionality. And it costs, what, a hundred dollars more? Pfft. No thanks. And buying one, and then spending extra on this thing just to play your old games on it feels like supporting a company for doing something that isn't good for their consumers.
If the Go offered something more valuable, it would be different. It doesn't. It's not like you have a constant 3G connection that you could use to download games, a la the iPhone or the Kindle (for books, of course). THAT would be worth paying a good amount of cheddar for. But you still have to use WiFi (which takes forever) or plug it into your PC or PS3 to load up the card. That is flat out dumb. It's a digitally distributed system that sucks at distributing digitally. Not to mention that it's still a PSP. If they amped up the hardware to provide better graphics that would even be a justification.
To me, it feels like a rip off. Sony should have just made the PSP2 with the features I mentioned and THEN upped the price.

Since from the very beginning the PSP GO was going to armageddon, from the point that PSP developers decided to remove the UMD. What are they thinking? They want to launch a secret-private store so they can monopolize PSP games? or perhaps a uncanny ulterior motive behind it?
either way, it was clear that gamers didn't acknowledge any of that.
PSP GO: sweet dreams or nightmare: http://bit.ly/psp-go-best-or-worst
(If only UMD has not been removed, then we won't be having this feedback)

I just find it ridiculous that people are complaining about an extra option. Sony still supports the 3000, in fact, more than ever before! The Go is just an alternative option.
would you rather just have one option, cause that seems stupid.

The irony is that such an attachment will add more of a premium onto the price of PSP Go and make it even MORE more expensive than the PSP 3000 which can do what PSP Go does and more.

Yes, yes, yes. Thank you. If you're worried about UMD's, you already HAVE a PSP. So spending three hundred for a system and then what, a hundred bucks? Fifty bucks? More cash money this peripheral just to do what your PSP already does? Dumb dumb dumb.

Not necesarily.
I could see Sony having a problem with this device, if it allows copying to the internal firmware. People would just buy used games, rip them, and return them.

that's like blaming nintendo for all the wii accessories because nintendo "signed off" on them.
once this whole contraption gets cheaper and the go has more support I might pick one up. It'd be nice to use this with a tv and controller and then just take the go out by itself when leaving the house. I used to own a psp1000 and it was just too bulky to put in my pocket

@space: I really don't know how the peripherial stuff works, but I would be surprised if the 1st party didn't have to give the "ok" to license 3rd party peripherials. Doesn't Logitech have to pay Sony to make it compatible with their system?

So it's a UMD add on that will most likely connect to the device via usb (unless they found another hole to stick it in) and cause the batteries to run out quicker. Genius, simply genius. Are they also going to release an AC adapter for it? I'm sure that'll go well with the portable Go.
To be fair though, if it allows you to copy/install your games to your memory stick, that would be great. Also, I doubt this is real. It just seems so... strange, consider the Go is supposed to be for Digital Distribution.

Think of it like a DVD external drive for a netbook.
And if you can copy the UMD's to the memory, it's like running games with a No-CD hack.

Queue 20+ telling why the Go sucks....
I don't have any handhelds and I'm not interested in buying any, but I bought two PSP Go's for my kids for Christmas and I think they are just fine. If I were interested in purchasing a handheld for myself I think the PSP Go would be my choice over the old one as well.
If your only complaints are price and lack of UMD, then just don't get one, it makes perfect sense not to. It's apparent that if lack of UMD is an issue than you already have an older model, so you don't "need" a Go. If you don't have a PSP-Anything you have two choices so just pick the one that you like.

people just don't understand that way of thinking when it comes to the psp. for some reason people have it in their minds that sony has given up on the 3000. it's so weird.
how many different types of phones does motorola make all with different features at different prices? How many Nintendo gameboys and DSes have there been. Companies are allowed to sell more than one thing at a time

I don't care what they want, they got what they got. (If that makes sense)
As many times as I have found DS games lying around in the floor I look forward to not having to buy physical media. I don't even want the option anymore. I can't tell you how many times I end up buying a game just to have it traded with their cousins for another game, and come to find out that they have also traded that one with someone else....
**I know I'm a hypocrite, I did the same thing when I was young**

I like the Go personally. I'd rather have a smaller unit without a battery sucking spinner. I fully embrace digital delivery, it's just easier to deal with for me. Make it easier for me to buy and store my games and I'll pay you for it. Steam, Direct2Drive, etc.. all wins.
I'm sure Sony will continue to expand the digitally available catalog on PSN, and now that Gamestop is selling PSN vouchers, they don't have a reason to start stonewalling about their sales being swept from under them, and their developer bilking used market will just have to suffer the consequences of the digital age. Until licenses start being transferrable anyway...

The Go does suck and I can't believe you bought 2 of them. When a cheaper option, that does EVERYTHING that the PSPGo does, exists and you choose the more expensive and restrictive version that just means you're dumb.
If you're issue was that you didn't want your kids leaving physical media laying around then you would just not buy the media for them. And then you complain about them trading games? That's like getting infinite free games for the one you purchased. If they are done with a game why not trade it with their cousins and get another game without spending more money?
You don't need to worry about the rest of us, we all know the Go does less and is too expensive so we won't be buying it. We just shake are heads when other fools throw their money away.

Good for you son. I bought two of them because thats what my kids wanted in the first place. It's odvious that you don't want one so why do you feel compelled to (a) state that you don't want one (b) state why no one else should get one and (c) shake your head when other "fools" waste their money.
Frankly I don't give a damn about you or your opinion. I really don't give a damn about what you choose to spend your money on either. That is the part that I really don't understand why do you and others (according to you) give a damn about how people spend their money...
I guess I'll never know.

Says the guy who goes to an online forum and posts his opinion on a product as well as how he chooses to spend his money. What gave you the impression that anyone gave two shits about your opinion as well?
Why do I "shake your head when other "fools" waste their money"? Cause I see a lot of uniformed consumers buy crap which just reinforces to the companies that you're stupid so why bother making things better and cost less. You just paid 100 more for 4 year old technology that does less than it did when it first came out. Good job!

You are still on the fact that I bought two PSP Go's for two kids (my own kids at that) that wanted them for Christmas. How stupid does that sound, so what if I bought the Go's instead of 3000's. Do you want me to take them back and get the 3000? I still have time if that will make you happy...
Another thing, I didn't force my opinion on anyone. I said if you already own a 3000 why get a Go. If you don't own either choose the one you like... Instead of listening to a bunch of whiners.

I personally give a damn what people buy now, because if you believe it or we(gamers) are at a crossroad.... DL or hardcopy....and because gaming has gone so mainstream now its getting to the point where casual gamers are depicting what happens to the rest of us, because of sheer numbers. Ill always want to trade sell and buy used games to save money but DD will eliminate that completely....and its the casual crowd thats naive enough to think that they will support both in the long run. but trust and believe as soon as the psp go constantly sells better than the 3000 than it will get the ax...systems dont typically co-exist ps2 was the special because of ps3 high price point where the difference was like 480 dollars.
