"I'm not saying it's going to happen tomorrow, but in the way that Activision sort of alternates sequels of Modern Warfare and Call of Duty and owns the leadership position in FPS [first-person-shooter], between Medal of Honor and Battlefield, I want it back," EA CEO John Riccitiello declared in an interview with Kotaku. This means war.
With the Call of Duty franchise growing into a $3-billion juggernaut, it's no surprise to see EA looking to topple Activision's bulging beast and reap the significant rewards. According to Riccitiello, the newly rebooted Medal of Honor and March's Battlefield: Bad Company 2 represent a strategy of "innovation and quality," one he suspects is bolstered by DICE's multiplayer expertise. "We think we've got an advantage over Modern Warfare 2 with our multiplayer," he suggested. "The guys at DICE do that really, really well."
So, you think the console wars are intense? Just wait until you see the war ... wars.

I'm totally fine with the competition. All the mentioned series are great (with the exception of the Medal of Honor reboot, which is unknown at this point), and this can only be positive for gamers. BF:BC was great, MW2 is amazing, BF:BC2 looks wonderful, and the MOH tease is intriguing. Fuck yes, is all I can say!

I'd be happy with an updated MOHAA. I still play that at LANs.

What kind of FPS would you prefer? My Little Pony vs Care Bears?
Actually, I'd probably play that.

In before the COD fanboys...j/k
But really, because I'm not alone in my disappointment with MW2, I was always looking forward to BF:BC2, but now I really am. And with DICE on the MOH MP development, I'm very eager to see what it's about.

well the second part of that statement is true. As BC2 already has better sound and graphics than MW2.

You are right that it won't beat MW2 in sales, but have you actually *played* MW2? COD4 was way, way better. They have made little tweaks here and there, but there's nothing amazing about MW2... Some parts are better than COD4, but some parts aren't - overall, it's underwhelming.
COD4 campaign is one of my favorite single-player experiences of all time. But I have always preferred the online in Battlefield. The huge, open maps, the multitude of options, vehicles... it all creates an environment where anything can happen, and each experience is unique and many times, memorable. In COD online, it all feels the same to me, with fewer memorable moments and far fewer options on play style.
That's my own personal opinion, and while I present it to you, I understand that everyone is different. You can safely bet that nothing will touch MW2's sales, sure, but you can't say that MW2 is better than games you haven't even played yet.

I've been on MW2, BC2 beta, & just recently the MAG beta. So, I have to give it up to MW2. The weapons are just much more solid. Every weapon feels differently & the level of customization is superb. MAG & BC2 weapons are customizable but it doesn't have enough depth. Weapons feel superficial.
The balance in MW2 also deserves praise: They reduced grenade spamming, & snipers can't hide forever.
The greatest detail comes from the death animation. Guys don't just go down rag-doll style, they die in style.

@Prof: +1. Yes, it's "cool" to hate on MW2 in internet forums. But like you I have been lucky enough to Play MAG, BF2, and MW2 and Mw2 is a pretty fricking awesome game and deserves much of its success. I the single player campaigns in MW1 and MW2 and the new play modes are a great addition.
BF2 is going to be a _solid_ title based on the beta and its GFX engine rocks the house but I'm fairly sure the end product is definitely not going to be decisvely better than MW2 as an overall game based on what I've ssen in the beta.
MAG is likely to end up the best of the bunch for online console play, IMHO, but I think that will limit it , too. I like some solo or co-op only options in a $60 game.
Bottom line: competition is GOOD for the customer.

Fun Fact: There are just as many Medal of Honor games as there are Call of Duty games.
And please bare in mind that not every Call of Duty is made by the same developer, just put out by the same publisher. Call of Duty 1, 2, 4, MW2: Infinity Ward, Call of Duty 3, W@W: Treyarch. So, to them, it's not an every year thing, just to us.

This is spectacular for gamers. Now, if CoD gets serious competition, it'll have to innovate and get even better. More competition always equals better games.

Killzone 2 is the closest competitor, but Halo could use a little freshening.
Though the Reach screenshots look promising. Have to wait and see the trailer (with it's awesome Marty Tunes-I've seen the music sheets)

The Fall of Reach was the only Halo book I've read - it was pretty awesome, I just wished Bungie actually referenced them more in their games.

Activision might not think so otherwise, they know that their next Modern Warfare game will sell just as better as their last with all the popularity and hype it has gained with just two games.
Its great to see other companies improving gaming experiences. I know Battlefield Bad Company 2 is one hell of a game. I hope to see more games like that in the future.

Me too. It's just hard to take down established franchises. Especially behemoths like Call of Duty....
The problem is what I like to call the "Friend Factor". When it comes to these types of games, people are buying and playing whatever their friends are playing. So if 1 person in a group of 5 buddies gets MW2 for 360, the chances are more than likely that those other 4 are going to get the same game on the same console and not even give another FPS a second look. You multiply that by how many groups of people there are that play Call of Duty religiously and it makes it nearly impossible for games like Bad Company 2 to make an impression on those players. However, all it takes is one person in that group to convince the others that BC2's multiplayer "trumps CoD's", and it's all over.
Just an observation....

Is it just me, or is EA that Jealous Teenage Boy sitting on the sidelines watching Activision Getting all the Action from the girls?
This comes across to me as a very "my dad is better than you're dad" attitude and i don't think that it's the best reason to consider making a present day war title. I reckon they will try to hard and fall flat on their arse.

It all comes down to money. EA and Activision are the two biggest publishers out there right now and are in direct competition with eachother. It only makes sense for one to try and one-up the other at their own game.
Just look at the battles: Guitar Hero vs. Rock Band, Skate vs. Tony Hawk, not to mention the various action games battling eachother and now this battle of CoD vs. MoH has been restarted.
It's business as usual.

Bad Company 2 basically *is* BF3. 32 players (24 on consoles), dedicated servers, incredible Frostbite engine for destructible environments (you can knock down whole buildings!), and the sounds are unlike any video game I've ever heard. It's like an action movie. So realistic sounding. The PC version also has joystiq and mod support. What more could you want? The PS3 beta has been fantastic and since I haven't upgraded my PC in like 4 years I'll probably get it for that but not sure yet until I play the PC beta too.
