It seems the cover star for EA reboot Medal of Honor bears quite a resemblance to a real-life military man -- and not the fictional lumberjack uncle we like to think resides in every Canadian family. Life did a feature on the armed forces in Afghanistan back in 2002, and one of the individuals (codenamed "Cowboy") highlighted in several photos (via UGO) seems to match the one highlighted on the FPS cover.
EA did mention working closely with "Tier 1 Operators from the US Special Operations Community," so it seems possible that the main character could be inspired by (if not actually based on) Mr. Cowboy. We've contacted EA to get some intel on this. We'll let you know, if we haven't been taken out for yesterday's ZZ Top joke.

Whoa, reading this made my skin crawl.
Imagine if you were this "cowboy," and some company wanted to make a game that allows other people to kill the same way you do.
I know every war game has you doing something similar, but I don't think I've ever thought of it being so personal as this.

I look at this mans glorious dirty santa beard, and then down at my own five o'clock shadow, and I get a little bit jealous. One day...one day...

A good buddy of mine has a beard that doesn't connect at his temple. So he's got like, a full head of hair, and a beard... and a void between the two. So weird.

beards are important in afghan culture, our special forces interact with the locals much more than regular soldiers and many have beards because they claim the locals trust them more

In the new Medal of Honor game your rank is based on the size of your beard.

After reading through over two pages of comments, it would seem all that came of this post was a discussion of combat-beard relevance and blog-posting douchebaggery. I could have done without the douchbaggery, but beards are awesome.
On a completely different note, I look forward to hearing more about this game.

Calling BS on that story, there is no listing for an "Erik Westmoreland" at the Congressional Medal of Honor Society (cmohs.org). The only two recipients to date for service in Afghanistan were Lt. Michael P. Murphy (Navy SEAL; "Lone Survivor" recounts the events) and Sergeant First Class Jared C. Monti (10th Mountain Division, U.S. Army).
It is NOT to my knowledge practice to award medals in secret; two ACTUAL Tier Ones received the Medal posthumously but publicly.

"Someone tell me why he is allowed to have a full grown beard in the military..it's a disgrace"
It's common practice for members of special forces (SEALs, Rangers, etc) to try to fit into the local populace as much as possible. As the game takes place in Afghanistan it obviously makes sense for members to grow a beard as all the native men in afghanistan do. Take a look at this SEAL team from operation Red Wing a few years ago: http://www.navy.mil/moh/mpmurphy/images/image005.jpg
FYI, All the men in that picture, save the third guy from the right, were KIA.
