What does 15 years of PlayStation look like? Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has opened a brand new site celebrating the legacy of the PlayStation platform, featuring a timeline of Sony's major gaming hardware releases, beginning with the launch of the original Japanese PlayStation on December 3rd, 1994. Sony's handheld holds a majority of those dotted events, with every version of the PSP (from the 1000 to the Go) represented.
The "15" year logo is a fun potpourri of various accessories released throughout the brand's history. In addition to SingStar microphones and Buzz! controllers, you can see Sony playing homage to UMD, PocketStation and rubber ducks -- stars of the initial tech demos for both PS2 and PS3.

clearly nostalgia! with this 15 years of big-bang.. I kind of remember their last video about their PS3 crashing to a Sony Bravia HD.. at 50MPH.. LOL, hopefully they will still create videos like that on the coming years.

I meant more the Saturn.
Yes, in the end, it was Sega's fault, but Sony didn't help matters.
And it was meant as a bit of light-hearted fun.

Sega committed suicide. They lost all interest in competing with Sony, so they didn't even bother. and the CD writer had nothing to do with it. burned Dreamcast games were not a big enough thing to hurt Sega- maybe if they had supported the Dreamcast for more than a year and a half it would have hurt them in the long run- but it was nowhere near as prolific a problem as, say- the R4 is to the DS.

Not to go too far off topic, but the Saturn debacle put Sega in the hole nearly a billion dollars. Dreamcast was a last-ditch effort to return to profitability, always with the intention of leaving the console market after it was done. The piracy was just the final straw that broke the Dreamcast (prevented any chance of ever making a profit from the system) The only reason they pulled support for the DC was because Sega literally had no money left to keep going on for another year.

As much as I hate to say it, the Saturn killed the Saturn with it's 400$ price and small library of stand outs like panzer dragoon and virtua fighter.

SEGA committed suicide by telling EA to fuck off. Granted, EA's Madden was a POS when compared to NFL 2K, but it didn't change the fact that EA completely ignored the DreamCast because of that. SEGA also scaled back on advertising instead of ramping it up here in the US. The DreamCast was pretty successful here in the US and SEGA got complacent instead of buckling down for a harder push against Nintendo and Sony.

So I guess that you are one of those who blames the winner for the faults of the loser. Under your premise Sega had no fault of its own for making poor decisions, investing money where it shouldn't, and releasing bad products. It was all Sony's fault for competing with better products that people actually wanted to buy. Yeah, it sounds to me that Sony was the bastard. Who in their right mind competes in a free market by releasing better products?
The Dreamcast was the best product released by Sega in nine years. It was too little too late to compensate for Sega's own mistakes.

15 years old today...hard to believe. I think I was 10 when the original Playstation launched, but my parents were too poor to afford one T__T So I didn't actually get a PS1 until I was 14!
But after that a long obsession with the Playstation began. For the first time Mario and Link weren't my favorite hero's. It was Snake, Cloud, and Alucard. In a way the Playstation 1 represented my own passage into adulthood.

Playstation was home to the darker more mature titles, that is for sure. N64 had its share, but i feel they were no where close to the level of disturbance you could achieve in ff7, silent hill, or resident evil

I'm not so sure about FF7 being disturbing or mature. Granted, it has some references that kids won't understand but it wasn't anywhere near as mature as FF6 was, especially it comes to personal responsibility/accountability issues. To me, FF7 introduced a great of things that were initially considered to be unlikely or even impossible like the high-resolution background texture mapping.
Xenogears, on the other hand, was a much darker and mature title than FF7. Darker even than FF6, which says a lot.

It was for me. It was the first game I played that used gratutitous amounts of cursing, even though it was censored with shit and fuck.
Also ff6 and 7 actually have a lot of parallel themes, particularly with the whole evil coorporation/empire. I finally cite the first time you follow the trail of blood and gore in the shinra offices, made me a scared boy.

Same here. The first PS game I ever tried was Micro Machines V3 at a friends house, and I fell in love with the little grey machine there and then.
Too bad the followng Micro Machines games have been after that brilliant game. Cursed as in: total crap.

I don't own a PS1 or PS2 anymore, but my PS3 plays both games and I still have my fav games from PS1/2 on CDs/DVDs.
Playstation really blew me away with games like Crash, Resident Evil, Metal Gear, Twisted metal and many others. If PS hadn't push the hardware like they did, today we wouldn't have super machines like PS3 & X360 (sorry Wii, but you still have last generation hardware).
Playstation for Life. Happy birthday

John, in 10 years the PS2 sold 100 million units. That should give you a clear indication that the Playstation brand is here to stay. Put your fanboy bias aside, Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft are all great for the industry and great for us gamers.

oh my god.. i'm still sinking hours into Twisted Metal 2 to this day...
the funny thing is, i don't even remember twisted metal 1, or anything about it...
the first game i ever got for PS1 was Road Rash,( a Genesis favorite, i'm glad my mother paid SOME attention to my video game habits despite her hating them lol)I thought the game was so slick, and the inclusion of music videos and such was like "omg".
Thanks for everything Playstation and Happy Birthday!

Ooh! Is it Playstation Memories Time?!
K, here's mine!
I distinctly remember my mother asking me what I wanted for Christmas, A Sony Playstation or a Sega Saturn. I figured at the time, Sega was already a well-established brand and Sony knew nothing of the video game market, so the choice was obviously clear. That Christmas, I got my new Sega Saturn with Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter 2 and Virtua Cop. Those were the only games I ever owned for the system. But I did rent a few fun titles like Gex, NiGHTS, Fighting Vipers and X-Men vs. Street Fighter.
To this day I wonder, what kind of gamer would I have been had I gotten the Playstation? Because I ended up hating the brand for a long time out of spite...I never owned a PS2 until quite recently and I never experienced all those great games between the two systems...
Thanks Sega...Thanks a lot!

that's like my conundrum- i was 13 when Sega launched the Saturn (a few months earlier than expected) in summer, 1995. i couldn't afford the $399 asking price, so i worked my ass off all summer mowing lawns, washing cars, house-sitting, babysitting, and dog-walking. by the end of the summer i had about $400 saved, but i had seen all the games coming out for the Playstation (twisted metal, air combat, warhawk, jumping flash, battle arena toshinden, loaded, tekken, wipeout, ridge racer, and of course who could forget the timed exclusive of Mortal Kombat 3 during the fall/holiday season?)
on a nervous, but excited whim- i decided to go with the Playstation (i too, was a sega kid) and got a memory card and tekken. 3 weeks later i got jumping flash. i was happy with my choice, but was always wondering in the back of my mind if i had made a mistake. it seemed like the Saturn was crashing an burning by the time christmas came around. they had lowered the price and had bundled in a bunch of the best games with the console (little did i know that this was a desperate move to sell more systems). so i pleaded with my mom to get me a saturn for christmas. she agreed to split the cost with me. so i saved up a little more money and with my birthday money (5 days before christmas) that i got from my parents and grandparents i was able to get the Saturn (with virtua cop, virtua fighter 2, and either sega rally or daytona USA) as well as Panzer Dragoon.
i was the happiest kid in the world- and i always loved both systems.
