Rumor: PSP Minis playable on PS3 before Christmas

Since the launch of the PSP Minis digital platform alongside the PSP Go back in October, Sony has showed little more than a passing interest in promoting its bite-sized game service. After playing a decent chunk of games at launch and then barely hearing a whisper since, we've been wondering when the company would show more support for Minis. If what we're hearing from a handful of reliable sources is true, however, the PSP Minis will finally get some attention in the near future as they become playable on the PlayStation 3.

It'll happen "before Christmas," says one source (confirmed as "this month" by others independently), allegedly with the entire selection of Minis (and presumably upcoming releases) to be playable on PlayStation 3 consoles -- with a resolution bump to boot. As for Sony: "We don't comment on rumor or speculation.", so we'll have to leave it in the rumor department for now.

Very cool. There are some interesting PSP minis out there (that Cube one from a few days ago looks cool). Seems only a hop-skip away from playing PSP games on PS3 too...

Cubixx looks nice. Plus, another $10 to the Tetris train might be worth it if it could be used at the home AND mobile.

sure would be nice to get my burnout legends playable on the ps3 and hdtv w/my ps3 controller :)

however, let me use my PSP Go as an advanced remote for the PS3 and then my spending $250 on it seems a little more justified :P

@ Extinction (or anyone) - Just curious, can you connect the PSPgo to the PS3 via Bluetooth or do you still have to rely on the WiFi connection?

Cool, everything on PSP should be playable on PS3! This is a start. PSP has tons of good content.

I agree, I would LOVE to have all my PSP titles playable on my PS3. That would really even up my PSP use, as I could play at home, then take my gaming on the go when I leave.

Don't know how they'd do UMDs (assuming they wouldn't force me to rebuy downloads), but maybe just a USB connection to the PS3 or some reverse remote play?

Totally agree. I would love to play some of those Final Fantasy, God of War and Silent Hill PSP only games... But I am just not going to buy a PSP. EVER.

So why not open up your market? There are at least 10 games I would buy to play on PS3... but still not enticing enough for me to own a handheld (that I would normally play in my house anyway since I don't have that much travel time in my schedule-at least not any that I could whip out a game and start playing it).

I know they want to keep system sales up, but what about the people that will never buy a psp? It has been almost 5 years, if I have not bought one yet, I don't see what will change my mind in the near future.

Exactly what I came in here to say. I'd probably buy more PSP games if they were playable on PS3.

@meh: yeah dude, considering I play NES on my 40" LCD, I don't think the PSP's resolution would bother me all that much...

It would be pretty nice to play Fieldrunners on a big screen.

This is great news, I wasn't going to buy a PSP Go anytime soon.

They work on normal PSPs too.

i doubt it will fill the screen... probably have black bars on the sides...

When I first heard about "Minis" I was hoping they would be just like the PSOne classics - playable on both the PS3 and the PSP. MAKE THAT HAPPEN SONY!

All PSN games should work for both systems. It's a lot to ask, yes, but it would greatly increase their value.

There is no seprate "minis" platform or engine, they are simply normal PSP games written with a few restrictions in place.

So basically a full PSP emulator would be needed. And if the PS3 can't emulate PS2 games (I guess that's why there is no BC in it), I'm doubtful it can emulate the PSP, which might not be as powerful, but is in the same ballpark.

PSP is a LOT less complex than PS2. An emulator would be a lot easier. Hell, most of the API calls would be exactly the same.

This would be cool news if there were any good PSP Minis. Maybe this could lead to certain non-Mini PSP games being playable on PS3? That'd sure be a lot more interesting.
