Now that they've seen the formula works, hopefully the next game will be both deeper and more polished.

I hope they don't beat it into the ground. Give us a nice, steady stream of DLC for the next two years and then release Borderlands 2. They should go the Ratchet & Clank Future route and release a smaller game (perhaps the aforementioned CL4P-TP Chronicles) as a download only release in about a year.

MattyMc13: The RPG elements are negligible. Borderlands is a sweet ass shooter with MMO-style quests.

As far as gameplay, I'd say first playthrough doing most of the stuff in the game and hitting level 50 will take around 35 hours depending on how much you're fooling around. Probably a lot less once you know where everything is and how to optimize your quest runs the second time around, but I've been fooling around a lot with it so that timescale is all skewed. If you love shooting stuff and don't get bored by the relatively easy difficulty there's a TON of gameplay on that disc, especially if you have like-minded friends.

I'd like to see either around what Fallout 3 had for dlc or more. A level extension would be sweet. I'd like to max my siren character. I had to keep backing away from the zombies for the braaaaaaaaaaaains trophy, because of my phoenix skill. Even though lighting zombies on fire is fun, its hard to shoot a fiery mass and get a headshot. More DLC, Zombie Ned was pretty fun, the bosses were pretty easy being a level 50, but they were pretty cool. I had a little chuckle at Pumpkin Head, reminding me of that horrible 80's horror movie. If there's a level extension, it could become more of a challenge for future dlc.

Too bad this ip is designed to be short term.
No trading system, game promotes chest farming, local item storage, easily hackable items, no DRM. No global chat rooms for game meet up. Lack of proper game settings.

All in all, not a long term ip. Also, they did a lot to fuck over us PC users who bought the game.

Yea, it actually sounds like a shitty PC port from consoles.

And RKN, I completely understand PC gamers being jaded. For the longest time, the business model was for these developers to release a metric ton of free content and also pay for dedicated servers for PC gamers to access.

Unfortunately, due to the significant increase in development and maintenance costs, the appearance of a short shelf life and publishers being required to consistently produce a significant profit for their shareholders, these types of things are going to the wayside.

On the plus side, when you game on PC there are always industrious people out there who make it so that you can have your own private servers, mods etc. This is something that we console gamers cannot do outside some modifications to our save files etc. :)

You know, I really feel for PC gamers getting the shaft with shoddy console ports, but give it a rest. You and your ilk are not fucking martyrs. Just be grateful your platform still provides unique and worthwhile experiences you can't get anywhere else (hello Sins of a Solar Empire). Remember arcades? See what they are relegated to now? Coin-Op gamers have earned a profound right to bitch, PC gamers still have it pretty damn good...

You're listing no DRM as a bad thing? What the hell is wrong with you?

Also, I know it's terrible, but I sometimes think of jaded PC gamers as the emos of the gaming world.

You can't complain much about the death of arcades since the experience has pretty much been entirely replaced. However if PC gaming dies, nothing can replace it, consoles would be a definite downgrade.

Yes.

This commenting system on joystiq is a POS. It's so bad, there's not even a delete button for double posts when the internet connection is misbehaving.

If I accidentally send a message before it's ready, I just wait for the inevitable verification email, and ignore it. Of course, I'm using the email and password that they said would allow immediate responses. It only occasionally works though.

Hell Yeah! Borderlands is teh awesome sauce! just make sure to give of lots of good DLC before the new games comes out in a couple of years. I expect at least 5 dlc next year if not more. These should include new vehicles and possibly new characters and a custom character creator and lots of new towns and areas to explore!!! =) make it happen Gearbox!

Oh is THAT all you want? What your describing is a sequel, or full blown retail expansion pack. DLC will add 3-4 hours, and a couple weapons.

I wish you could get your own claptrap, and seriously, why is there only 1 vehicle? It seems like if you made 3 types, a fast, lightly armored, lightly weaponed one, a middle one like the one in the game, and a large tank type thats slow and powerful, that you could really have some fun multi-player experiences with it. But hey, what do I know, I only play games.

Does anyone else find it odd that there needs to be any kind of fanfare about the creation of a successful new IP? It might just be my imagination, but it seems like just a few years ago there were no shortages of successful original series starting up and now we're making a fuss because someone made a successful game that didn't happen to be a sequel.

I guess part of that is due to the volatile job market. With stories of entire development teams getting shit canned the second a project is finished, developers probably like to get some reassurance from their publishers. It's sad but it makes sense. Publishers just aren't too eager to venture on a project that doesn't have an established fan base to guarantee a return.

It's not like there aren't any original ideas this year (though when I think about it a lot of the ones that spring to mind have been smaller projects like Trine and Shadow Complex). Maybe originality is only fiscally responsible on a small scale these days. That's even sadder. But who do you blame? Gamers for not dropping $60 on something they don't want just to support original game properties? Or publishers for not taking stupid risks during an economic downturn?

Honestly, it has a lot to do with the cost of development exponentially rising this console generation.

Look at Factor 5 (Lair) and Free Radical (Haze)

Both were successful developers in previous generations and they had 1 bomb and they had to shutter their doors (yes Free radical was saved)

So yes, a new IP is something that is amazing for consoles mainly because publishers know exactly what will happen if it fails unfortunately (they lose a lot of money)

It's not like movies where they can rely on the first weekend and then hope for decent dvd, tv, hulu, netflix income after the fact. It's pretty much one and done. If you have a stinker, you're screwed. Especially seeing as they get no revenue from the used game market where someone will most likely go if they want to try it out but they know it's shit.

Honestly, I think we're going to see more Live and PSN arcade type games where they try out new idea's/IP's mainly because the dev costs are so much lower.

Or on the PC where you're going to see a lot of thing's like Torchlight where it's definitely a game, but it's more a trial to see if it will work so that they can complete their whole vision for the game (multiplayer/mmo)

I'm not saying that Bordelands isn't worthy for a sequel. Modern Warfare sure as hell deserved a sequel. Pitchford just said he'd like to see IW develop more new Ip's.

My no-DRM comment was completely based on local item storage. Items should be generated and recorded on a master server. If you can hack your own gun, what's the point of playing the game and grinding for better items?
