The Saboteur's day-one DLC unlocks nudity, self-loathing

Here's at least one reason to buy your copy of The Saboteur new: All fresh copies of the game will ship with a code to download DLC, called "The Midnight Show," for free. The pack contains new Parisian hiding spots, a new minigame and, for better or for worse, the option to unlock nudity in the game.

If you buy the game sans code, you'll also be able to pick up the DLC for $2.99 / 240. But at that point, whether you'll admit it or not, you're basically paying to see digi-boobies ... and if you do that, we're just not sure we can be friends with you any more.

I'm glad they're doing stuff like this. You know how we keep hearing about studios closing and people getting laid off? A lot of that you can lay right at the feet of the used games business model.

This brings to mind an interesting question. Does a game bypass the rating system by providing DLC to unlock adult content? Presumably the ratings board only rates the disc contents.

I could see games where the player shoots flowers at librarians to get an E rating, until the DLC is applied and you have Niko killing prostitutes.

I dont think there's going to be anything more than just the nudity, so i think that should still slide under the M rating. As for DLC, well, big ones like Episodes from Liberty City got rated didnt they? TLAD had full frontal congressional cock and kept an M.

But that's a bit different. The game disc gets rated. DLC gets rated. But the DLC rating doesn't retroactively apply to the game disc.

So a developer could make an E or T rated game and release whatever they want as DLC. If the DLC gets an M or AO rating, that doesn't hurt their sales at brick & mortar stores.

haven't you been paying attention to the news? Games are far better/worse than movies and pictures, because they are interactive and will give you the sense of being in a German-occupied 1940's French whore house with ultra-realistic graphics and sensations.

You just can't get that with photos.

After playing this you're probably gonna talk Oirish and kill Nazi's in black and white! So imagine how much better the game boobies will be than photos!

I really don't like all this DLC trend, especially day-one DLC, though this tactic looks to discourage sales of used games. Good for the fat cats at least.

Fact is used game sales hurt the new game market a good deal. I think this is a good way to give incentive for people to buy new. At the same time, the people that buy used don't actually lose anything important to either gameplay or atmosphere, and essentially get the same experience. It's also not paid DLC for the people who buy the game new, so it's not artificially increasing the price of the game, it only makes a modest $5 off the people who buy it used AND want see nudity.

Working for Gamestop for something like 6 years, I can tell you that there are a TON of people who wouldn't buy new games if they couldn't bring in other games to lower the cost.

You'd like to think everyone can readily afford a new $60 game, and doesn't trade in games for $3-5, but that's definitely not the case.

Used games follow a cycle, and in that cycle is the act of buying new games at lowered cost.

Yea, I understand this is true, but a lot of people also buy games like MW2 for $55 used instead of $60 new from gamestop, saving $5 bucks but not supporting the developer one bit.

The used game market can't just disappear, which is why this is such a good idea. It initially gives incentive to buy the game new, but if you buy it used you will still save a bunch of money, and if you decide you want the DLC the developer is still supported (if only a little) This way the gamer ends up paying less for the game, gamestop gets their profit from the used sale, and the developer gets at least a bit to live off of. It's not ideal or perfect, but it's smart in that everyone wins to some degree.

And just curious, is the DLC or any other future DLC coming to the PC version? I'd like to know why the PC misses out frequently on DLC the console versions get, there are several great ways to distribute DLC on the PC, that's no excuse.

EA, consider this game purchased by me. This was off my radar, but I will support this and any other game that pushes petty censorship limits by displaying nudity (albeit "digital" nudity).

Props to EA and Pandemic for this! Lots hope other developers grow some balls and start adding content like this and stop being chicken shit of stupid conservative media shows (that in the end would likely bolster sales anyways!).
