I backup the developers on this game. Why confine to the countries ratings board when they get more strict? The only way this is going to change is if gamers in Australia speak out, not if the developers cave into the ratings board demands.

If no developer caved to these standards it'll make the gamers from their country get up and take a more active role in what media is judged by in their country.

Importing games is just confining to a messed up system.

Gamers in Australia seriously need to ban together and get things changed. It's not hard just start up a Twitter/Myspace/Facebook and start passing the message on Xbox Live in the matches you go to with other Australians. Word will spread and when you get 500,000 or more followers start mailing news outlets and the ratings board. If you don't say anything there's no reason to complain about it.

I'm surprised no one in Australia hasn't done this already

Oh that Sprinkles Guy I read his posts for the lulz and i hope he posts before the end of 2009 so i can get more laughs ! but alas people report him and he get's banned. heck sometimes i go to google and look up Joystiq and Sprinkles and such to read his old comments but most are either gone and deleted very few of his comments exist.

i know we shouldn't cheer on the trolls but Sprinkles i have to admit is different. heck just seeing a joystiq thread made with all this years Sprinkles comments and other people's responces too him would make one entertaining article wouldn't it not.

Sprinkles if your reading this or someone who know sprinkles. i need a good laugh, come back and troll again for the lulz !

Never mind the fact that this is soley due to ONE person's inability to pass a damn bill.

Yes, another game banned, it sucks, we know. Blame Micheal Atkinson, instead of coming up with smart-arse comments about australia being a nanny-state. This guy wont get elected next time, lesson learned.

PS, AU is pretty much the worst country in the world. Here is a video of your average Austrailian athetics event.

@DJ Danny Testiomontinello:
I just... how...
*blinks*
*shakes head*
/facepalm.

More constructively; the GFC *can* be largely placed as a problem caused by America. I'm not saying that America was the sole reason, but a large reason nonetheless. The fact of banks lending money they didn't have to people who couldn't pay it back was always going to come tumbling down on top of them eventually, and it did. Oh and some of the stupid names the banks and stuff had probably didn't help. I mean you look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Financial_crisis_of_2007%E2%80%932009#Background_and_causes and the U.S. shows up so many times!

Also, ha!
Calling Australia bad at sports is just ignorant.
We've got a FAR higher amount of Olympic medals per capita than the U.S. to start, then there's the fact we play Football (and have even started calling it Football more now!).
Oh, and we actually speak and write in ENGLISH; not Americenglish.

Wow DJ Danny, you're so ignorant. Not only do we have free universal heath care for all citizens, the worlds most beautiful women and weather, and better fords than the US could ever make, we also have 1/10th the crime per capita and at least 1/100th of the racism per capita. Our homeless rate is also far far lower, and we're the only advanced economy in the world to avoid a technical recession. Not only that, we're also the first advanced economy to quickly bounce back from the economic slide and the first to show positive growth. I could go on and on but honestly, the only thing i can possibly think of that ruins our shining reputation, is the 18+ games debacle. Everything else in our country remains top-notch and i cannot fault it.

I'll damned if I'm gonna sit here and let someone spout off about how america as a whole is dumber than adelaide

when I was in adelaide they had a huge fountain that was built while the region was going through a massive ten year drought. After it was done they realized how dumb it was and now they just always leave the fountain turned off.

adelaide is the only "city" I've ever been to that made me angry just by being there.
It's a fucking hole filled with heaps of fucking goon drinking bogans.

every other part of oz is amazing and I highly recommend moving there or traveling there, but stay the fuck out of adelaide. the lack of violent video games is the least of their worries

What I want to really want to see is for someone to make a silly, sarcastic censored version of a high-profile game for the Australian market. You know, brightly colored confetti in place of blood, rainbows erupting from the chests of enemies you've shot, fluffy bunnies being fired from bazookas, that sort of thing. Then when the player reaches the end of the game, there's a note that reads, "Thought this was ridiculous? We do too. Blame your government."

He does seriously believe he's protecting the children by stopping an R18+ rating; because by not having an R18+ rating some games that are R18+ in other regions get slid under the MA15+ rating.
Now I know that some parents think "oh MA15+ is okay; I know Jimmy is only 12 but that's not that bad" without even looking at why it was rated that... That might happen when the game is rated R18+ in other countries.

The man can't be reasoned with. Give him a rational argument for R18+, and he will completely ignore it, while spouting his usual sensationalist lines. It's actually quite sad to see this elder of the community behave so childishly.

Many games that should be rated R18+, are shoehorned into the MA15+ category. If Australia had an R18+, then these games would be labelled properly. I pity the unknowing parent that buys these games, thinking that they're not violent or suggestive. Michael Atkinson, you have let these parents down.

I love it here for so many many reasons i couldn't car to name, probably mainly cause we do Fords better than the US does www.fpv.com.au and the universal free healthcare, but as a gamer, it sucks balls. I was looking forward to L4D2 so much, and i refuse to buy this gimped version until i pay someone from overseas to gift me a copy (which circumvents the censorship). AVP was another on my must-own list, but now look. FFS!

I'm still waiting for one of these companies to stand up to the Australian Classification Board's bullshit and either release a totally ridiculous censorship (i.e. when someone's head is supposed to get ripped off, instead you just see a bunch of rainbows and butterflies or something) or just skip the release altogether.

Now, I know Valve would never do this (too much money to be made), but I was really hoping that they would refuse to sell the game in Australia at all- a high-profile title like that not being released in Australia could really make a statement. It's beyond me why the ratings board refuses to allow a higher classification for titles, especially considering the demographics (most gamers are over 20 at least); plus, it's not like movies are censored in the same way!

If this happens, it can't be just one company or else the ratings board won't be pressured by retailers enough to cause an uproar. If it was something like EA, Activision, Valve, THQ, and a few others, it would be enough potential money lost for the AU territory that the ratings board, its supporting politicians, and anyone else who is on the "games are BAD!" bandwagon might be forced into creating an R18 rating.

This is ridiculous. If the violence exceeds the 15+ rating then they need to introduce an adult rating. Telling adult people what they can and cannot play, watch or read is not up to governments, it is upto the inidividual to decide, and in the case of those unsuitable, the bloody parents. Not some petty bureaucrat who just likes slapping red tape on things.

Why would Australia deliberately make things harder on its economy at this time?

I feel for you folk in Australia as I hate being told what to do on a very basic, personal level... regardless of what the arguments are. I've held firmly that it is very NEVER the governments place to put arbitrary restrictions on people, but rather that of the parent. If the parents wants to let their 8 year old child play the latest AvP, so be it. I would not necessarily let my children play such a game... but it is most certainly not the government's job. Let the government have the big stuff... war, theft, murder, education... stuff that governments are made for and stay the hell away from the people's personal lives.
