It may not have acid blood or infrared vision, but the Australian Classification Board has won its battle against Rebellion's upcoming Aliens vs. Predator game. "The game contains first-person perspective, close-up depictions of human characters being subjected to various types of violence, including explicit decapitation and dismemberment as well as locational damage such as stabbing through the chest, mouth, throat, or eyes," the board reports. Apparently, the game's excessive gore and violence exceeds the requirements for a MA15+ rating. Without an option for an R18+ rating, Aliens vs. Predator becomes the latest title to join the ever-growing list of essentially "banned" games in the territory.
Sega is left with two options should it want to pursue an Australian release: Attempt an appeal with the board, or censor the game's content to meet Australian standards. Should AvP follow in the footsteps of the edited Left 4 Dead 2, Australian gamers should get ready to be disappointed yet again.
Update: Rebellion responds. Oh snap!

This is exactly why I import so many of my games now.
It's ridiculous that we do not have a R18 rating for games, because one old politician believes that games are meant for kids still.
With Australia and its grossly over-priced games (we pay $100-$120 for new release games, despite our dollar being quite strong now) I doubt mnay kids are able to buy these games, nevermind the fact that the average gamer is in their 20s.
I have no problem them denying games like these an MA15+ rating, most of them are to violent for that bracket, what annoys me is the incosistency of ratings, and the lack of R18 which would help ensure that kids are not able to play these games anyway!
And that's my Aussie rant :p

You know, another option would be that we get rid of Michael Atkinson. He's pretty much the cause of all this. That, and Australia Govt's exploitation of their implied freedom of speech.

"Rebellion responds, noting that an edited version will not be released in Australia. "We will not be releasing a sanitized or cut down version for territories where adults are not considered by their governments to be able to make their own entertainment choices." Oh, snap!"

I started a facebook group to protest this. I don't know if it will do anything but join it anyway if you feel Australia should have an adult rating.

Or they could just focus on making a good game rather than focusing on shoving knives through eye sockets and decapitation. I think the level of gore is far surpassing the need for it.
Why even have ratings at all. They are meant to keep children from being exposed to graphic violence and other themes but only 1 out of 100 managers will prevent the sale of a M rated game to a minor.
That is really why Australia doesn't want an 18+ rating. The only way to prevent the games from being bought by minors is to prevent them from being sold in the first place.
