EA CEO John Riccitiello claims there were multiple factors in the decision to shutter Pandemic Studios, but one of the most significant was the studio's California base of operations. In an interview with Kotaku, Riccitiello blamed a combination of regulatory changes that affect technology and entertainment companies in California, as well as the tax incentives offered in other countries as major factors in the company's decision. "For good or for bad, we are taking down headcount in California because it is really expensive," Riccitiello said.
Another factor in the decision is the rapid growth of digitally delivered titles and browser-based games, leading Riccitiello to believe that the industry is quickly moving away from a focus on "packaged" software. "In a world that used to be all PC, then used to be all console, now it's neither." Riccitiello's comments echo those of Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada, who recently advised publishers to prepare for the "exponential growth" of digital delivery and server-based games following the announcement the studio would restructure its Eidos London offices, resulting in layoffs.
Pandemic Studios' closure comes at an interesting time, as the announcement was made just weeks before the studio's final title: The Saboteur. However, Riccitiello reiterated that the company's brand and franchises will live on.

I just read your previous post Darth. I am deeply saddened by your decision to withdraw your Planeteer status. Mainly because you failed to do the proper investigating with the above imposter's post. I have many enemies in this world, (global warming, styrofoam, carbon dioxide, etc.) but never did I expect a fellow Planeteer to betray my trust.
With that said, I am revoking your Planeteer status, effect immediately. I now dub thee:

Holy fuck how old are you all? 12? Joystiq over the past year or so has developed easily the worst commenter community of all of the gaming blogs I read... Darth/Captain Planet (also although I don't see them here, fake Peter Moore, Bobby Kotick, etc.) thank you for ruining the comment section of this site for me. I've accomplished far more at work this year than I have in years past, and I've got you mildly-retarded lot to thank for it.

I really only feel you can like living in california under 2 conditions:
1. You've lived here for less than 10 years.
or
2. You've never lived any place else.
If you've lived here longer than 10 years then you realize that the majority of people in Cali are completely phoney douches without a modicum of introspection. However if you've only lived in Cali then you wouldn't notice that would you.
Live on the East coast anywhere for a while it's far more genuine than the west coast. Don't get me wrong there are great people everywhere (except maybe in texas), its just that when I go out in the sea of humanity in Cali I always feel like I'm wading through a sea of turds looking for a few oysters.

I've traveled all over the country, and I disagree. There are phoney douches everywhere. Go to New York and you'll be putting up with even more douches than San Francisco. In general I like it here because there is a lot to do and a lot going on all the time, something I don't get in other parts of the country.
That said, no one place is good for everyone, so move. If the location of your job is costing you happiness, then what's the point? Why force yourself to live in a place you hate?

I'm liking this Riccitiello more and more. He closes a well-liked studio, and of course everyone reacts, usually negatively. But here he comes and offers a reasonable explanation about why it was closed. It makes sense.
If this were Bobby Kotick, he'd probably say something like "We closed Pandemic because they were enjoying themselves too much."

It's only too expensive to locate lousy studios here. If you good work done and the people to do it are in California, it makes sense to be here. But paying California prices for poor quality output sure doesn't make sense.
In the end, you don't hear EA execs talking about how California isn't a suitable place to do work when they're talking where the execs are located!
Art work and a lot of programming will be moving to cheaper places, look at what MS did with PGR3, PGR4 and Forza 2 and 3. That's just the way it is. Perhaps if EA is lucky they can get the Canadian government to pay for their development like Ubi gets and Dyack got.
Riccitiello should be a bit more careful with his words. He says California is too expensive and "the UK" is cheaper. That's only true if you compare the expensive parts of California and the cheap parts of the UK. Try locating your UK studio near Central London and see how it stacks up in price. Now try moving some of your California development out of San Francisco to Sacramento and see how it stacks up in price again.
For some reason, Riccitiello wants to price match SF (one of the top cities in the world to live in) against Guildford.

That's bullshit, and on top of it all what a stupid thing to say. OK, I agree it's expensive to do business here, but if thats the only reason he shut Pandemic down, my name is Mickey Mouse.
Why didn't they move the studio or offer transfers then?
And if what he says is true, there's probably a lot of people at both EARS and EALA that are polishing up their resume about now.
Guarantee, Richy-tello will be asked to step down as CEO within 2 years. Has anyone been keeping track of the stock prices lately? Down, down, down.

Yet more people want nothing to do with California because of its economy and standard of living. And then NY and Michigan are having the same problems...meanwhile, all of the idiots running these states think that they need to tax the remaining people there even more to make up for it.

California is taking less money per $100 of income in the state this year than the median take in the last 42 years.

i.e.: California isn't increasing taxation as much as you think, if at all.

Don't worry they are calling in a "State of Emergency" vote in order to pass new taxes. When they say its a state of emergency vote then it only needs a regular majority to pass rather than the 2/3rds normally required.
There are at least 60% retards in Cali so expect to pay even more taxes than are listed in your .gov report.

Your view of this situation is beyond simplistic. There's much easier ways to add taxes than to declare a state of emergency (which doesn't even work the way you say anyway, it merely allows the Governor to cut spending he otherwise couldn't cut), for example the "eWaste" fee is a tax, it's $8 you pay when you buy a TV and you don't get anything for it and you don't get it back when you get rid of the TV.
You've got the talking points mastered but no real understanding.

The reason Cali is taking in less than ever per capita is because people who produce wealth are leaving. Taxes have gone up, but all that's left to tax are Hollywood holdouts and welfare recipients. When the tax base is poor, raising taxes can still generate lower revenues.

Work on your reading comprehension.
It's less tax collected per $100 earned in personal income within that state than at other recent times. So if these money makers you speak of left the state as you say, it would make the problem worse.
Maybe you could work out another explanation? Feel free to still base it upon generalized hatred but try to work some actual reasons that make sense this time.

My reading comprehension is fine. California has a "progressive" income tax structure. This means that lower income families pay a lower percentage of their salaries than higher income people do. Taxes on the first $100 generates $1 tax revenue while $100 past $1 million generates $10.30. Higher income people are leaving the state. With only lower income people to generate a revenue from a progressive system, what we have is a lower per $100 tax revenue.
Don't argue with the CPA when it comes to taxes.
