We can't put our finger on it, but for some reason, Gearbox's recent trademark filing for the title Borderworlds sounds awfully familiar. Oh, that's right! It released that other game with the eerily similar title earlier this year, Border ... wait. Borderareas. Or was it Borderlocales? Borderlands? No, wait, it was Borderregions. Yeah, definitely Borderregions.
Following yesterday's positive comments from the Take-Two conference call, a sequel to the fastest-selling new IP of 2009 certainly seems like a natural next step. However, considering a world is considerably larger than a land ... or region, Gearbox could be planning something appropriately larger in scope than the series' first installment. Or, it could simply be covering its titular bases, as appears to be the case with the "War Hero" trademarks filed earlier this year.
Update: Apparently, the Borderworlds trademark was filed back in 2007. Apologies for the confusion!

I can't wait for a developer to make a game called "Netherregions"...
So, we have Borderlands, Borderworlds, followed by Borderuniverse? Borderverse?

Exactly what I was thinking. A good FPS/RPG MMO in the Borderlands universe would be pretty exciting. I only worry that due to limitations of DVDs and hard drive installs that they won't be able to add as many levels/areas/regions/locales/lands/planets as I'd like.
I'd love to see at least 4-5 planets, each with as many areas as the current game has. Probably wishful thinking on my part, at least for the console version, but one can dream... and what a beautiful dream it is.

So, to be clear, you recommend the game, but you don't recommend BUYING the game.

Definitely a Gamefly / Rent
It's a fun experience, especially with a couch co-op friend or online, but when one of you gets all your skill points / items / proficiencies erased mid-game, it turns from a roaring good time into a cry yourself to sleep time.

Seeing that screenshot makes me want to go play right now...
I think talking about how enjoyable Borderlands is would just be obvious to most other readers, so I'll just say that I'm already excited for something that sounds like a larger version of the game. There is room for improvement and I am hoping that they take their time to flesh out the sequel to its full potential.

Yeah. Even though I knew I won, I still pumped a few extra rounds into that thing... just in case. Also, I tried to show that flaming bird that came out of the nearby cave. Sadly he escaped every time. :(

So now we can trademark things that sounds the same... and they have claimed everything related to border? Darn....
My latest idea named Borders (a game where you are a Mexican, or a Canadian) who is trying to make it across the boarder... Guess I have to rename it Take-Three or Gearcrate...

Hey Gearbox, have you considered opening a bookstore?

I think opening a place called "Bordernovels" would likely incite some lawsuits.

I finally got around to buying borderlands a few days ago, been playing it almost religiously since I bought it. The game is a lot of fun. Not very deep per say and the story is pretty bad, but who cares, it's tons of fun!
It's pretty much just a shooter with Diablo style character progression and loot, and there is nothing wrong with that as far as I am concerned.

I get the feeling this is just like a lot of trademark filings like Guitar Villain or Drum Hero, in that they aren't actually going to be used in anyway besides protecting the companies interest. Im sure, at least i very much hope, that gearbox can think of a better name than that

So is the difference going to be as stark between Disneyland and Disneyworld?
