As anyone who's ever played an MMORPG probably already knows, in-game gold sellers are a complete blight on the genre. Nothing is more disruptive to your personal, epic fantasy tale than frequent private messages informing you that "GOLD4CASH $5/500 $10/1200 $20/3000 buy now msg plz!!!!" That's why we were so pleased to hear that the GMs in Aion go above and beyond when it comes to banning these currency-hocking players from the game. They don't just suspend their accounts, you see -- they utterly decimate their avatars.
Check out the video after the jump to see the game's unique brand of justice-serving in action.

True.
When Aion was first in beta... a lot of 'haters' were complaining that Aion would be full of gold farmers... well BAM.

At the very least it will serve as an example. They may not get them all, but it's better than not doing anything. Of course if people were just apathetic simpletons like yourself, nothing would ever get done.

give me a break, it wont do anything, i don't care how smug you want to be to me.
all that will happen is that the gold sellers go onto the next account they have in line, or go and hack more accounts and do it again.
this wont do anything, and obviously Aion hasnt hired full time GMs to go and ban sellers, after a few hours it will be back to normal.
gold sellers have been around since MMOs have been around, and they will always be there.

I..can't make out anything. You must have to have ADD to be able to understand all that text and icons.

You need to be able to condense your thoughts to concentrate. Here we got 45 hot keys, 3 different status bars, and 80 people all talking at the same time on the screen. ADD people have the energy to keep up with all that.

ADD was the original...before ADHD got all the attention. To all of you who don't remember the good ol' days...its the same thing.
ADD - Attention Deficit Disorder
ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
...and no, you don't have to be hyperactive to have it. Many adults learn to cope or cover their symptoms without showing signs of hyperactivity.

I'm sure Runescape is fondly remembered by those who played it long ago when they were immature kids.

I don't see how that genre of game is any fun. It's so much work and just seems way out of date but I think I'm in the minority with that opinion.

I was just a normal guy with a life and friends. I played casual video games on the consoles and was mainly involved with Halo 3, other shooters, and sports games. Then one day my frat brother told me about his glory days Everquest and WoW. So expecting to think it was a horrible, boring game, I downloaded the trial of WoW. The trial was pretty boring and there was not much to do, but for some reason it left me wanting more.
A few of us ended up downloading an illegal version of the game and played on wowscape, a private server. There were a bunch of bugs, but I got addicting to leveling up. I played for about 4 months but I was never a very good player and I quit the game for good because it was ruining my social life/school work.
Then for some retarded reason I decided to play the trial again, and once again I wanted to play the full version. This time, however, I bought the retail version and started playing on a retail server. I once again became addicted to leveling up, but it was just the beginning. When I reached the max level I soon found myself constantly searching for strategies to get better and I spent all my time playing the game. I stopped going to class, I stopped picking up the phone when friends/family would call. My life basically was smoking pot and playing WoW. I played for about 11 months and I was one of the best PvE mages on my server. Then one day I realized that my life was significantly worse and I was depressed as fuck and it was all because of WoW and smoking pot. So i quit both and my life has been improving ever since. Its been about 4 months since i quit and i've never been better.

Wow Donny. Your story reminds me of that doc Joystiq posted about a few months ago. I'm glad you put it down.

at least smoke pot with others, that way you still keep the social bar and the fun bar full.

RS is a GREAT game if you don't have the money or the computer to play anything expensive. It's fairly large for a mere $5 a month I'd say.
Although one you do get more money and a better computer, you realize there are better things.

This reminds when I use to play Asheron's Call. All the different events they use to have, many that were detrimental to low level players and absolutely relentless to level one gold hawkers (not that I remember seeing many.)
Huge bronze statues coming to life in the middle of town decimating anyone near them. It really kept you out of the cities. There were piles of level one mules when you went to town. Ohhhh I so miss that.
Also like that blood plague that..er..plagued WoW that time, gold seller spam dropped off almost completely.

Fond memories of Runescape back in the day when the clan scene was really active and I hadn't the computer nor the money for WoW. It was my first large amount of time put into an MMORPG and my last so far. I just can't justify that must time into one game, although LOTRO is tempting me back.

I remember when they announced the Second Life beta, if you got caught cheating your avatar would be transported to a Ancient Roman-esque world and your Avatar would be crucified.

Yes it's flashy and funny and whatever to see a GM show up and immolate a bunch of gold sellers, but really, they're just killing bots, and they could probably be doing it much faster if they skipped the theatrics. I suppose it makes people happy to actually see it happening, but I can't help thinking that this is a pretty inefficient way to do things i light of how aggressive those goddamn gold sellers can be. Then again, maybe the GMs are bots too lol

Arcter, I'm almost positive what's actually happening is GMs are hunting for Goldseller accounts behind the scenes using special software, banning en masse akin to the 10k+ they banned recently, and then when they get a petition from the players that "so and so is gold-selling", they rain fiery justice from the heavens as a form of community involvement 1) for the entertainment value, and 2) just to show players "No really, we actually ARE doing something". It's a great way to give the players something for their trouble, while still accomplishing something worthwhile.

Ah, the sweet lava of internet justice.
Hey Blizzard, could we get GMs to decapitate gold sellers and put their heads on pikes in the capital cities to serve as a warning for any site that dares to sell GOLD4MONIEZ?

The word you are looking for is "destroy." Decimate means to cull one of ten.
