Though Brazil is no stranger to banning video games, a recently proposed bill from Senator Valdir Raupp certainly seems pretty drastic. Raupp's bill, which was recently passed by the Education Commission of the Senate, and will now go to vote in the Committee on Constitution and Justice, seeks to "curb the manufacture, distribution, importation, distribution, trading and custody, storage [of] the video games that affect the customs [and] traditions of the people, their worship, creeds, religions and symbols."
According to Brazilian news site UOL, if the bill passes, folks caught violating the law could be subject to one to three years imprisonment. That's quite a bit of jail time to serve for just importing a copy of Grand Theft Auto IV, dont'cha think?

As with any other complex issue, attempting to solve a problem by putting your head in the sand is doomed to fail.
Between the (almost certain to be created) black market trade in video games, and the political upheaval created by those of the population who aren't willing to accept such constraints on their freedom (even if the intent is admirable), it's almost certain that passing this bill would have a net detrimental impact on their society.

Well off course! You expect someone to pay 300 bucks for a damn game? I don't think so.

I can see where he's coming from and why he's trying to do what he's trying to do. Its hard to stay from with the recent school shootings. I would like to see a study done actually comparing time periods. Our time period, where the media is where its at vs the time period of say, when our parents were alive and all they'd played was pong. How often, if any, where there school shootings in their time? I think when we're gone from this life and reach a higher plane of understanding, we're gonna find how much the media really does effect the human mind, quite possibly more than we can see now.
Figure the girl that sits for 15-60 minutes at day on her lunch break at work. What is she doing? If magazines are available, you can bet she's going to be reading them obsorbing what the MEDIA and world would think her physical appearance should be not only to attract a guy, but also to be accepted by the world she lives in.
On the flip side of that coin, though the things that we see and read about in the media are a travesty, what do we really learn from it? Does it help us to be a better person? It was once said, "That we learn from our own falls." But what if we can learn from the fall of another? Did you known, that in German schools, students are required to field trip to a concentration camp? You see the video's of the students, and there are tears in their eyes as they leave. 1) They can't believe humanity can be that cruel to execute their own 2)They really discover the person they want to be by learning from their past. Is it a wonder, that Germany cracks down on violent material themselves? For darn good reason! But at the same time, they learn from it. The Halocaust has never repeated itself, because the country refuses to allow it to.
I've seen the polls for Modern Warfare 2 when asked how they felt about the part of the game where you went in to execute innocent people. Sadly, majority of those who'd answered the pole said, "But, its just a game." If I were Infinity Ward, the writer, and I inserted that (and I hope this was their mindset) it would have been to help the player see and realize what could be caused by that. That its in fact disturbing to do that, that it weighs on your mind and its really the kind of thing we want to avoid. You could play that entire scene, not having to fire a shot.
I see what this Senator is trying to accomplish, and that's alright. He firmly believes is can help the citizens of Brazil become better. But if not, they can see and learn the impact of others decisions and learn from them. If every game where developed with the cinematic pizzaz as Uncharted 2, gamers would finally be able to feel. To understand. Its a great thing.

Sadly, banning of imports/distribution of games like GTA could also means increasing of piracy.
Can't we all just get along?

This a new virus all over South America, they are trying to copy what Venezuela already did a couple of months ago, where all video games with war, weapons and any other violent related theme is banned from buying, distributing, selling, importing, etc....
