1) never found this bug
2) it is making you confirm because that is how all future missions work - you confirm to take that at that time, or choose to pass (you can come back later)
3) You go to the square because that's necessary to move the story along - how did it take you 15 minutes to figure this out? You've got a map.
4) You are immediately recognized because the guy knows you are coming and who you are.
5) You're just now learning the controls even though you've already fought several times - that sounds like a you problem
6) Cutscenes aren't exquisite, but they're certainly not the ugliest in a generation

To sum up, sounds to me like there's a whole lot of YOU problems in there, very few actually game problems. It's not perfect, but your arguments are flimsy at best.

Something I thought was brilliant was the story surrounding the game's feather collecting. They could have used meaningless flags like the first game did, but instead they made it all about Ezio trying to comfort his traumatized mother. I enjoyed the gameplay of running around the cities collecting the feathers anyway, but it was made significantly better with the context of doing something in the memory of your deceased brother.

No. You still fail.

If the sentence was "That got off to a slow start," then yes. TWSS. But just pulling "slow start" out of the body of the copy doesn't do it.

Other examples:

"That was slow to start but it picked up at the end."
"Can't you make this go any faster?"
"Why is this taking so long?"
"How do I beat it?"

I hope the devs don't listen too closely to this complaint. All we need is the ADHD, no-attention-span kiddies ruining the games that actually develop characters. If it wasn't for us experiencing Ezio's carefree youth and familial bond, why would we be invested in the tragedy that follows? Why would we feel the same desire for revenge?

I'd rather want to accomplish a goal because of the story and my connection to the characters instead of just because the game mechanics tell me to or for an achievement. AC2 has a great story - and one that is much stronger than the first. Guess how the first game started? That's right: with a bang of action and little to no exposition.

Dramatic Structure 101 maintains that the best stories offer Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, and Resolution. Start exclusing parts of that and you muddy the narrative.

Am I the only one that wished the opening would be longer? Whilst I was still not if my Assassins Cloths.

Slow beginning? Did any of these complainers ever play Kingdom Hearts II? THAT was a slow beginning. The fact that the title card showed up 3 hours into the game is crazy.

+1. Who the hell's complaining? I thought the pacing of the game was just fine and didn't notice any of this so-called "slow" start.

That is good. I laugh out loud at anyone who could complain about the beginning of what might be the easiest game of the year.

I like deep stories, give me the back story. I guess AC2 was a little slow at the start, but look at what Fallout 3 did with having you as a child and progress into your 20's. That worked great.

Yea, Fallout 3's beginning was fantastic. I loved every minute of it. Like I said below, not all games have to have break neck paces, bombarding you with tons of action and/or be over the top (like people wanted GTAIV to be). Each game should be judged on it's own merits...but again, great point about Fallout 3. Wish I owned that one but I MAY get it. It was only a very late rental to see what it was about. Playing RPGs is like having a full time job so I don't get to into them. Hell, I NEVER even came close to finishing my Oblivion and probably never will since I lost all my data.

I didn't even notice the beginning being "slow". See, that's the prob with microwave minds, these days. Everything has to be upfront in their faces with a gallon of "now, now, now..." thrown in. NOT every game has to have break neck paces like MW2. I take each game as an individual game and like them for their individual merits, not so much on what the next game has done.

AC2 was GREAT!

Perhaps I should have figured out that I needed to go to the square sooner, but I didn't think it was obvious since there were 2 guards posted at the door and the objective said to 'follow' him....I think it's pretty valid to assume that meant he was planning on moving at some point.

Also, I didn't say I hadn't figured out the fighting controls by the time I got to the tutorial...I was merely commenting on the fact that they delay the tutorial long enough that by the time you reach it, it's pretty much pointless.

Lastly...after you assassinate him, the guards still know who you are and there are wanted posters all over the place, yet being spotted is not instant-death. They arbitrarily change that rule in the game world at that point and it's frustrating and unnecessary.

meeeh. these were the same people who complained about all the Italian in a game set in Italy.

immersion comes at the cost of engagement. you have to learn a little about the character you're embodying, and learning that he's had specific experiences and comes from a specific background helps to grow your engagement into the idea that you're performing as character who *is not you*.

if you only want to play with characters you don't have to take time to engage, go play Ms. Pac Man.

Now that I think back on it... ACII was pretty slow to start, but it really set up the story quite well. You got to know Ezio and really fall into his shoes. Also, it made the road leading up to donning the white robes all the more fulfilling, in my opinion. I also like that he fell into this lifestyle and just wasn't a killing machine from the get-go... although either way is fine.

At any rate, boots555 just named off another of my absolute favorite games and brought up a good point... this lengthy intro business really gets you into the role that you're taking on and that, in turn, leads to deeper immersion and seeing relationships between the character you play as and his friends, family, enemies, etc. in a whole new light.

Good things come to those who wait, and Assassin's Creed II is no exception. I'm more annoyed by the slightly kludgy control, but even that doesn't affect my enjoyment of the game that much.

I don't think that this will bother me, although I don't have the game. I'd much rather be eased in with some solid story, character explanation, and training missions than do what many games do these days -- launch you right into some action packed bloodbath, ALA Modern Warfare 2.

the thing is, MW2 is a direct sequel to COD4 and starts off right then. this is a sequel too, but the part in italy is way after the middle eastern parts of the first game.

and another tip, don't explain your "joke" right when you say it. if some idiot asks (that's assuming it's a good joke) or no one can figure out how you thought it was anywhere near funny (that's when it's a bad one), then you explain it.

O.o I didnt know anyone could complain about this. I thought the pacing was good, and actually I wouldnt have been pissed if they drew out the adolescent part a bit. I mean, you were asked to complete 1 viewpoint, 1 race, 1 beatup event, 1 courier event, and maybe 1 or 2 missions? (i can't remember) before your father and brothers were murdered. I guess some players couldn't wait to get to the meat of the game.

This was all training to assimilate players to the general feel of the game, and the variety of playable events within. I even thought the baby part was a cool way to integrate the button control configuration without breaking from the story.

The main problem I have with it is that I took the game to my brother's house and I showed it to him, but we never made it to any cool parts of the game. He didn't have his costume, nothing. It's a hard game to jump in and out of.

When I played through it, I had more time, so it wasn't a big deal. I did like the character progression a bit more than AC1, so it wasn't a bad move to make the character feel more real. I just wish that during the cutscenes more would happen then two people just standing around talking. Way too much exposition (although the first game was worse in that respect as well).
