I'm not so confident in his numbers-something seems a bit off-and that's US only.

Worldwide, the Wii will probably still win, but I'd call it a toss up between the 360 and the PS3 for second place.

PS3 will take second place, the only region the 360 still has a chance is the U.S.
Plus the 360 wont last till 2016

@not matt

What?

That's completely irrelevant, they are two different products.

That's like me saying "It's all fun and games playing xbox live until clippy comes up and annoys the hell out of you"

I'm not on any side, ps3 wii or 360, but that was just... out of place?

Except 69, that the PS3 unfortunately suffers from build quality problems, mostly the YLOD and broken Blu-Ray drive, its more common than PS3 fanboys want to admit. They keep sweeping it under the rug.

This EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich is clearly a complete dumb ass. The Wii is a total farce...a pure novelty with games looking no better than the Gamecube. Motion controller in standard def 4:3 crap. Nobody gives a crap about the Wii anymore and Nintendon't has lost all their luster over the past 10 years now...no gaming inovation, and that garbage New Mario Bros Wii is a complete step backwards in gaming advancement... can not image how anyone would pay $60 retail for a 20 year old rehashed game. Stick with Super Mario World for SNES - it's superior in every possible way.

The Wii only "wins" if games like Modern Warfare, Battlefield, Borderlands, Gears of War, Uncharted, God of War are unimportant to you, and things like talking to each other while playing any of those games don't factor in.

Respect to the sales, of course... But it's such a non-issue in a way - you could go out and buy the 'winner' based on sales, but you're hurting yourself if you miss what's going on with the 360 and the PS3.

By the numbers, the Wii has the crown. But what do those numbers mean, really? I only own one, and it sits dormant for most of the year. I can't remember my 'friend code' like I can my LIVE gamertag or my PSN name. The huge Wii sales haven't really led to devs being able to really gain traction on the device - Nintendo makes the only (arguably) essential games. The 360 is definitely the winner this gen if gaming is considered.

How funny that you say that because those games, to me, exemplify exactly how fucking stale and repetitive gaming has become. I don't give a shit about any of them. I am so sick of tough guy simulators.

So zelda using the same forumla for 20 years, mario still using the same exact moves he's had since the N64, and smash bros being the same game 3 times isn't stale either?

you can't be a nintendo fanboy and complain about others lack of innovation, when ninty hasn't made a new core IP in over a generation.

On topic, everyone wins who makes a profit and doesn't go under. Only fanboys think there has to be one company who "wins" an imaginary console war.

If Nintendo keeps up their "fuck the third parties" behavior they pioneered in the NES and SNES days which lead to the mass exodus of developers to Playstation and keeps up through to this day. Sure Nintendo would host one hell of a party but like the DS and Wii, they'll likely be the only ones attending.

Nintendo has tried reaching out to third parties in this generation. They've done pretty much everything short of giving them free money like Microsoft does (money to develop exclusives, advertising assistance), third parties have collectively given Nintendo the finger still

But third parties have largely been losing money, too. So we can't be sure about how smart they are.

Well, they might care in reference to third-party support, which can depend on userbase. In this case, though, PS3/60 is effectively the same platform for third parties, and its userbase worldwide is slightly higher than Wii. (About 51.5% vs 48.5% worldwide - warning - vgchartz figures, but they'll be vaguely right.)

So if anyone's confused as to why third parties don't often develop their top games for Wii - not only can they have prettier (albeit more expensive) graphics on the other platform, but they get more users too, even though when taken individually, both other platforms are also-rans.

It's official - even without taking worst-case predictions, Wii is already losing the console war! Yeah... in a *sense*... but I actually think it's a pretty real sense. Not that Nintendo are that bothered - but let's put it this way, if Wii had 80% share and the other two were fighting for 20%, instead of being 50-50, you can damn well bet the big games would be on Wii first and foremost.

Of course if you only care about the console war from a brand loyalty perspective then there's no point adding up the two HD platforms like this and Wii has clearly 'won', but apart from warm fuzzies this doesn't make that much difference for anyone; userbase does make at least some difference.

People who only own 1 console do.

Does this guy think anyone doubted the Wii would finish first? It was the cheapest for a long time and got grandmas, soccer moms and other people who would normally never buy a console into gaming.

Nintendo will rake in the dough, but I think they've lost a lot of credibility amongst lifelong gamers.

Yes, and those people are called fanboys. Plus a "console war" makes for great pageviews for video game blogs, especially troll-tastic entities like Kotaku, who fans the flames of the "console war" at least once a day. Sure, blogs like Destructoid and Joystiq are guilty of the same kind of sensationalist bullshit to drive pageviews, but no one does it better or more frequently than Kotaku.

Well Dreaded,

Just because every console is in the house doesn't mean there aren't slight biases toward one console or the other. Take me for example, I have all three and I never play the Wii and I use the Xbox 360 more than the Playstation 3 due to the fact that I do not like the load times and errors that frequently occur within my PS3 system (mostly with the updates). Now this problem could be localized to my system, but it still gives me a slight preference. I don't believe anyone can be truly unbiased with systems that are so disparate and if you find something you like on one and not on the other you are then classified as a fanboy unfortunately.

I, as a PSWii owner, do not. Everyone benefits from multiple systems, even if they don't know it. We're pretty much in a 2.5 console generation with the main split being personal choice of features and the high profile exclusive games (Halo, God of War, etc.). The main stumbling block came from the Wii's unexpected success. Devs and publishers rushed to get ANYTHING out on the console without spending the time to make quality games. While there are some standouts like No More Heroes, Super Mario Galaxy, MadWorld, MP:3, among others, most of these are 1st party because Nintendo knows the Wii inside out, while 3rd party devs haven't taken the time to really learn the system and flex its power.

SMG proves that you can make a brilliant looking game on the Wii, the same way God of War will show what you can really do with the PS3. While the Wii is commercially successful, the attach rate and lower amount of "hardcore" games on the system may end with Nintendo winning the console war but having to rely on itself to produce the games like Pikmin 3 and Metroid: Other M to keep it on the shelf next to more serious gamers' PS3/360.

As long as quality titles are spread out over the three systems, we the gamers are the winners, which is frankly all I care about. I didn't buy a PS3 and a Wii to help Nintendo/Sony win this gen, I bought them to enjoy myself, which is what we should all be doing.

Who...cares. The Wii is a piece of garbage with gimicky gameplay elements and a slew of absolutey crappy games. I would guess that 96% of all of it's games are complete and utter throw aways. "Oh...let's get a Wii this holiday honey! Nintendo would love for us to blow at least $300 on the system, extra controller set and a game or two. Then, let's play it for a month or two and let it collect all of the dust in our home!"

I'd be more willing to be a 50% drop the next year in Wii sales followed the next 2 years by 75% - 80%. I think the fad is really almost run its course and it's going to fall to a trickle.

I also expect that due to the economy all the consoles are going to have a tough go of it but due to the dedication of the core gamer both xbox and ps3 will fare far better over this period as Nintendo races to undo what they have done to the game community.

Hmm, not to sound like an ass... but I wish someone would figure out Wii sales in the last week to put an end to comments like this.

I work at a wal-mart in Michigan that sold over 120 Wii's in one day.

Mind you Wal-Mart is currently selling Wii's with a 50 dollar gift card at no extra charge... But I'd say about half of the Wii's I've sold the person buying it didn't even know about that.

The 'fad' isn't going away. It's not a fad... Get used to it... it's here to stay.

You should all just accept that Wii is, and will remain the sales leader of this generation...

I have a Wii, and I love it... I play it as much as my 360... and if I had a PS3 I'm guessing they'd all get about the same amount of play time...

This "homg this console rulez and this console sux" thing is a bit childish ya know.. I grew out of it after I realized I was a moron for my "natal and sony's motion controllerz are not teh leet cuz wii is uber awesome" attitude was obnoxious. They are three amazing consoles... with their own ups and downs... if you don't like one DON'T BUY IT. Oh! And don't sit there and comment about how much it sucks. No body likes trolls... not even trolls like trolls.

Maybe it's just because I'm getting older - or maybe it's that I'm becoming more methodical about my gaming purchases...but I consider a console worth its salt in the games it offers - not how many are sold.

That being said - my personal victory goes to the PS3/360 - then the DS...the Wii - way in last place. Haven't bought a game for it since the ides of Genghis Khan.

I say such knowledge is for the business side of the company - those that monitor profits - not the gamer side. It's only fuel for a perpetually unyielding and completely inane flame war.

I'd say the better choice is owning one of the HD Twins and a Wii, because the term Twins applies quite well. The list of exclusives is slimming, and even their exclusives are often interchangeable with one another. With one of them, and Wii, and one of the handhelds, you'd get the broadest possible experience i should think.

Don't worry PS3/360 folks, you can also still enjoy your systems, its going to be OKAY!!!
