Why do you want to play those on your Wii when there are two other consoles that do it just fine?

I enjoy all of my Wii games on Wii... I do not enjoy very many Wii ports that I've played... and a lot of the Wii shovelware isn't really half bad...

Okay I lied... there are a lot of really bad ... I mean really bad games for Wii..

but hey you'd do it too if you knew they were going to sell (even if a quarter of Wii owners buy your game that's still a crap ton of sales) it's like making a PS2 game.. you almost can't go wrong... kind of why there are a lot of bad downloadable PS3/360 games... it's a cheap way to make a lot of money

what am I ranting about again?

Oh yeah... It's just where the industry is going.. I've noticed a lot of crappier PS3/360 games since it's not 9 trillion dollars to develop them anymore... still expensive (especially compared to Wii... which makes developing crappy games even easier!)

Wii's hardware might not be able to keep up with those other consoles... but it sure as hell can hold it's own... blame the developers not the console...
..
.
.
btw everyone needs to stop the gimmick comments.... Wii has been out to long for that... it'd be a gimmick if it failed... I admit sometimes.. a lot of times... motion controlled feels really tacked on.. but it's gimmicky in those games.... that's still not the console or controllers fault... it's developers..

Okay, I'll shut up now

I realize I'm just a grumpy old man but somehow my manhood is not insulted no matter how many consoles Nintendo sells.

It's the choice of kids and old, old people. Everyone I know who has it has games like Lego Star Wars and Wii sports.

Everyone I know who has a PS3 or 360 plays games like Madden, Uncharted, Left 4 Dead , Halo etc.

To me it's like someone telling me that more people play rock paper scissors than Quarters or I Never. Great. All are valid games, but which ones appeal to me as an adult?

Now what would be interesting is across all three, which sees the most playtime x consoles in homes. Now THAT would be interesting. How about DVD playtime versus Blu-Ray versus Netflicks (now that both consoles have it). Let's get some fan-boi fireworks going!

I've got to say different strokes for different folks. For the core gamers, it's not that we hate Wii games, but they're party games. For when we're not playing rock band with our friends.

For serious games the 360 and PS3 are unmatched. Madden sucks on the Wii. I dare anyone to challenge that statement. Some games aren't good waggling. There's isn't a good online experience on the Wii and shooters suck on it if you don't want on the rail gun games.

This year has been an awesome year for me personally. With my limited playtime I've had a blast with in no particular order, Dead Space, replaying Mass Effect and Bioshock, Gears of War 2 and all the whoring to go with it, Rainbow 6 1 & 2 Marvel Ult Alliance, Halo 3 and ODST, Halo Wars, Uncharted, Modern Warfare 2, Dragon Age (totally kicks ass and my GOTY) Madden, Peggle, Splosion Man, Rock Band 2, L4D 1 & 2.....These are just off the top of my head. IMO, cannot miss experiences for someone like myself.

It has been a stellar year gaming wise, between my 360 and using my buddies PS3.

On my other friends Wii, we'd rather play the old N64 verison of Mario Kart than play the new one that punishes you for being good. That's just me though.

"HD fanboys" - Very clever! This joke can be used to cast aspersions on just about any obvious choice.

People who don't want to buy televisions made in 1950 - color fanboys!
People who think 2+2=4? Math fanboys!
People who don't like drinking anti-freeze? Life fanboys!

I don't think it is "hatred" to point out that Nintendo's success lies in the field of marketing more than in the field of video game making. They've moved a lot of consoles, and damaged the hearts and minds of people who revered the NES/SNES from their childhood.

No one's raging unnecessarily though. Nintendo's success is a shell, a facade. Like it was said, they're more of a marketing company now than a game making company. They sell an image like Apple does, and sit back and rake in the money while everyone else is advancing the industry

Look at games this gen that have moved the industry forward technically and creatively, just off the top of my head: Oblivion/Fallout 3, Mass Effect, Killzone 2, Uncharted 1/2, modern warfare 1, Portal, GTA 4, Bioshock, Assassin's Creed 2, Dead Space etc etc

What do they all have in common? They're not on the Wii. Ninty fanboys like to call everyone else graphic whores, but in order to progress the industry you need that extra horsepower. All those games I listed that have moved the industry forward this gen, couldn't have been done on the Wii or any other last gen system.

I love how he points out the HD fanboy rage......and proceeds to get 2 replies of HD fanboy rage right after. So many sad sad people who just can't grasp that there are more "casuals" in the world then "hardcores", who want something different then what they want. Why it is so hard for them to just accept that, i'll never understand.

Yes, but few of those games needed the extra horsepower to do what they did. Killzone 2, i'll grant, because it's focus in terms of wow-power was primarily technical, but few others.

Where Nintendo excels is in terms of genre-bending, as i like to call it, and they've had that in spades this generation. They've become even more about the software, because if they didn't have the software to back it up, then it really would be a gimmick that would flop rather quickly.

Nintendo is profitable MS and Sony aren't quit crying about it. They don't do this for fun they do it to make money. If you don't make money you fail plain and simple.

What this generation will be known for the most is a) the growth of the casual market, b) motion controls, c) growth of online play, and d) console services. Every generation has seen a significant leap in graphics, and in that regard, the change to HD graphics is little different from the past.

I expect the HD games to advance games graphically: it's a tautological argument practically.

As much as I enjoyed Oblivion, Mass Effect and Fallout 3, that gameplay was available in the previous generation. They were hardly staggeringly new innovations in terms of gameplay or even creativity. While I've played a lot of fun games, few have truly been innovative and advanced gameplay.

tmac, you claim that Nintendo is just about selling image . . . don't be naive and think that Microsoft and Sony aren't trying to sell image as well. The idea that Nintendo hasn't advanced the industry is particularly obtuse when the others are busy imitating Nintendo.

"Yes, but few of those games needed the extra horsepower to do what they did. Killzone 2, i'll grant, because it's focus in terms of wow-power was primarily technical, but few others."

Then I guess NSMBW shouldn't need to use 3-d graphics to do what it did either since its merely a 2-D game that could've used pixeled graphics instead.
Most developers like to see their ideas come to fruition as close to their vision as possible. Therefore utilizing more powerful hardware, if its widely available, will be the way to go 90% of the time. Just because you think developers should make more with less doesn't mean they want to.

But really, if extra horsepower isn't supposed to matter then where are all the killer apps for the Wii to compete with the likes of the Forza 3's, Oblivions, GTA4's and Assassin Creeds out there? Where are the game-of-the-year quality titles that can stand head and shoulders above these games? If it doesn't matter then there shouldn't even be any kind of problem for Nintendo or third parties to churn out plenty of games that can rank up there with the today's best.

Wii maybe lead the race in console sales, and I don't knock them over that, but in terms of having blockbuster, defining-moment games that can make me or most others put down their 360, or PS3 controller to stand up and give them serious accolade, it's barely there. It's probably going to be that way until they make a console with more horsepower underneath its bonnet to attract more serious developers; and no amount of genre-bending is going help its case either.

if profitable, they're all winners.

Which still means that only Nintendo is a winner, out of the three.

Really, if we go by profit, GameCube almost beat PS2 (not in terms of revenue, obviously, where Sony was as far out ahead as they were in sales)

They both turned a profit in 2008 - Turning a profit is a little more complicated than you guys act. So I guess everyone already won this "war". These are large companies with a lot more going on than just making consoles or games.

"Divnich: Wii can't help but win this generation"

They can if they pull of another end of year drought like they did this year! Sure, New Super Mario Bros Wii was fantastic in almost every way, but one solid game for a console during this season is unacceptable!

But really, does any console really "lose" this generation? They both have established large market shares, and I believe 360 and PS3 are almost to the point of profitability.

Let's all just cross our fingers that these 3 companies don't get that itchy trigger finger and drop their next console in the next few years. Let's have some time to enjoy what we have and give developers a chance to really push these pieces of hardware (might save the developers some money too, in the long haul.).

I'd like to know where you got the idea that "everyone pretty much agrees sucks" from. The Wii & the DS are outselling their competitors because of those things, so not very many people think they suck apparently.
