Old-school Mario is news again as New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold at Sonic-speed throughout its Japanese launch last week. Andriasang reports that the platformer sold 422,000 copies in its first day (December 3), with Famitsu following up that NSMB Wii moved 936,734 units by Sunday, December 6, its "first week" at retail, stomping the previous week-one sales record held by Super Smash Bros. Brawl (816k).
And with that, Mario has pulled off his hat trick, scoring in Japan's top three first-week bestsellers, which also includes Mario Kart Wii (608k). Monster Hunter 3 (583k) follows in fourth place.
In other news, Joystiq Publishing, in collaboration with acclaimed developer Nincom, is pleased to announce "Mushroom Hunter Wii," the VIDEO GAME EVENT OF THE NEXT GENERATION -- for Wii -- exclusively in Japan (while supplies last). Pre-order today!

This is how the villains in Captain Planet became villains. Everyone always claims that they just wanted to destroy the earth for stupid reasons like fun and profit, but they don't know the truth. The truth of the mullet.

Not sure "sublime" describes 4 played action in NSMBW. It's as big a cluster that you'll experience in gaming.

At first I assumed that was just the Japanese name for Mario Bros. haha.
Those Japanese have the weirdest game titles sometimes.

First I was feeling a little down because I thought I read that Nintendo was releasing the Black Wii Monster Hunter Tri bundle, but then my day turned around when I had the pleasure of unintentionally listening to a catchy 80's pop song.
Thanks, Joystiq.

Are you guys crazy? How is this game lacking in content? Is has 8 worlds witch contain a bunch of levels. If you play them all it will take you as long as any average game. If you try to get all the star coins, a legitimate challenge, it would take even longer. I'd estimate 15 hours for the whole thing. Is that not enough??

lol at the people who fail to see the lack of effort or care that went into this game.
Recycle a few old characters, throw in a few new items, call it a day. They didn't even bother to get online leaderboards, much less the much requested online multiplayer mode.
I know it's been said before, but there's no reason that this couldn't have been a wiiware or DS release. Or at least a 30 dollar budget title. As a 50 dollar release though, it's unacceptable.

casualness and quality are two different axis of measuring a game. thinking they didn't put much effort on the game is more of measure of quality than the crowd that it attempts to target.

Nonsense, it's a game that was meant to be a quick cash in, like so many of the other casual games out today. Just because it isn't a minigame collection doesn't mean it wasn't made for newbies. It sure as hell wasn't made for gamers.

I don't see how lack of effort or care equates to omitting online gameplay. They just didn't want to do it. Doesn't mean there's no effort put into the game.
...or maybe they noticed how the majority of "online" features in games are tacked-on, buggy, affairs that have little relation to how the game is played in single player mode.

I don't see how NIntendo not putting online support means that Nintendo didn't put any effort in the game. And seeing how positive many of the reviews have been, that seems to suggest quite the opposite: That Nintendo put in a lot of time and effort ensuring those who've played Mario for years have a good experience. And it looks like they succeeded.

Please explain how a traditional, Mario game that hasn't been seen on a console for years is like so many other casual games? I'm curious to hear your answer.

You obviously didn't played the game .... i WISH half of the games had this "lack of effort" ... because it means one of the best map design in 2d plataforming ever .. and the small details that makes this not be a ds tittle
And you also obviously didn't played the game to know that online would fail for the lack of "i will punch you if you kill me again ***hole !" =P

I've already explained myself well enough. Anyone who denies that this game shouldn't have had online leaderboards/multiplayer, far far more levels, a level editor, and all that good stuff needs to quit being such an idiotic fanboy and wake up.
There's a reason Mario games like this aren't released as full fledged console releases anymore. It's because more is expected nowadays. Had this been like 500 levels instead of 100 something (counting toad houses and enemies), or had it had more options, it would be worthy. As it stands now it's shameful.

So we have a 4chan tard here do we? Who else would be stupid enough to count copy/pasting as a counterarguement?
Thanks for proving my point even more tardo: You have to be an idiot to believe this small amount of content is acceptable for a 50 dollar release.

I think aang1818 has a valid point. This game falls short on content and effort. The only reason people like it is because of the nostalgia factor and because it's got Mario on the cover. I am so disappointed in this game it's hard for me to explain it in words. Is the game fun? Somewhat. Is the game a ripoff? Absolutely.

This will probably be the first game I play when I get my wii later this month, even over Galaxy. Watching gameplay vids of it just reminds me too much of my childhood days with the old games, and as much as I love this gen overall, I miss the days when gaming was simpler. A lot less bullshit flying around.

It is really excellent from a design standpoint. Nothing really blew my mind about that game (except the final fight with Bowser. holy shit), but when i look back on it, each level introduces something new (for that particular game, at least), or approaches something old in a new way. That way all the levels feel quite unique
Plus i was a sucker for "unlock world 9 levels by getting all star coins." That really compelled me to play after the final boss in a way that i wouldn't have otherwise cared about.

Let me just tell you something from the bottom of my heart: This game is terrible. I said it and I mean it. Play Galaxy, Wario Shake It, Metroid, World Of Goo, Brawl, Animal Crossing or even Punch Out before this one.
The only hook this game has is that it reminds you of your childhood. I'm so letdown with the lack of quality in this game. It's damn near impossible to play the levels with more than one person because the gameplay has a momentary stutter when someone dies.
I don't know man ... I still think the pinnacle of Wii game is Wario Land Shake It. Thats the most underrated game on the platform and my favorite Nintendo games since the N64 era.

It's a great game. I understand how my comment made it seem I like it a lot less than I really do.
I wouldn't call the simultaneous 4-player 'sublime', but very entertaining. You get in each other's way more often than not, so it doesn't help game progress, but it's an excellent form of casual multiplayer. And Temidien you also make a good point.
I guess what I'm trying to say is Nintendo got lazy with never-before seen ideas. Hell, everything is recycled from Mario 3 or World. I understand why they couldn't make Peach playable instead of an EXTRA TOAD, but they could have put Daisy, Wario, or any other Mario character...
Two generic Toads? Come on!
Meh, I'm just ranting. It's kind of a compliment to Nintendo in an indirect way for it indicates I expect a lot from those guys. They're brilliant after all.
