Pachter is on a roll today!

I'd predict they save any cuts until the Natal launch, but that's just me. Bigger question is, if MS cuts the price, will Sony match it?

This was the first gen where I paid launch prices...it hurts, but I guess I got the systems for a long time before everyone else. Still, 950 for the both BEFORE tax is a shit ton.

Not only will there be a price cut with Natal, but there will also be a console redesign!

I should change my name to pachterfish.

Why are people down voting Chris when he speaks complete truth? You will end up spending more for a full functioning 360 over a short period of time than a PS3 in its expensive days.

That's funny smooth, because i've had my 360 for near 3 years now and haven't spent anywhere near $600 on it on stuff that I wouldn't have had to buy with any console. Just how long is a "short time" exactly?

And don't give me that stupid list where everyone buys every accessory ever made at 110% of the over-inflated MSRP that no one ever actually buys stuff at.

Well, let's see. I bought the console at 450 (Sam's bundle with an extra controller and Play and Charge kit). 2 extra controllers-70. Wireless bridge-45. Live-50. Quick Charge kit? 20. Rechargeable batteries? 20. Wireless Headset (because I went through three of the POS wired ones) 50.

Sure sounds a lot more expensive than my PS3. And I didn't even include the 70 for upgrading the hard drive to the 60GB version...

Controllers have never been 70 bucks sense day one! I know i had my 360 3 weeks before you could buy one from the store.

And why do you need 2 play and charge kits wouldn't you just need 2 more battery's for you other controllers. that would be 22 bucks 11 per battery. And rechargeable batteries, Where did they come from? And a wireless headset is not free on ps3. Free headset is better than none in my book any day.

Your numbers are all messed up!

No, your analysis is messed up. I said it was a TWO PACK of controllers, totaling 70. I paid 20 for an accessory pack that came with four rechargeable battery packs. The Quick Charge kit is the home charger.

And I don't have to buy a "Sony Wireless Headset" for my PS3.

Think before you type, jackass.

I got my 360 for $400 when Gears came out. I then payed what, 3 years of xbox live? At about $35 a year. I bought my fat PS3 when the priced dropped for $220. So I think it's safe to say the 360 cost me more. Had I bought a PS3 at launch, it would have been $100 more expensive than the 360 including all of these years of live. $75 if you count the quick charge kit.

@Darth WTF are you talking about.....

2 sixaxis would have been 100
20 for battery thats your dumbass for buy batteries when it came with a play and charge kit...

And im assuming your taking about a wireless adapter because a wireless bridge is used for any wifi device not just xbox so lets redo this

XBOX elite -450
Live -50
2 controllers- 70
headset-50
Quick charge- 20

640
(bigger HD--710)

(40-80gb)ps3-500
2 controllers -110
Headset- 40-80 (bluetooths prices were higher 2yrs ago)
HDMI - 50 (store prices because most bought at time of purchase )
quick charger -20 ( to be fair cause you have a quick charger when it already came with a charge kit so apparently charging from consoles arent your thing

740 I went 60 as the middle on headset price

And i compared the top ps3 to make it fair and even if you did get a bigger HD it still comes out even.....and at the end of the day you still have one more xbox controller than ps3

Duh? Right now you get a lot more for your money with the PS3, and the PS3 has more highly anticipated exclusives coming out. The xbox is a great console but if Microsoft wants people to buy one over the PS3 they need to step up their game. Reducing the price is a good step. Announcing more exclusives, like Gears 3, is another. Making Live free would help too.

I can't believe Pachter gets paid so much for stating the obvious... I came to this conclusion long before the PS3 price drop was even official...

SONY isn't FORCING Microsoft to do ANYTHING... this is very much Microsoft's game at the moment-- Microsoft hasn't consistently placed last year-over-year in this gen's console race, Microsoft currently has a higher install base (and according to best-case/worse-case projections, will STILL control the numbers well into the last term of this console cycle), and most importantly, Microsoft is not STILL LOSING MONEY on each console sold... Microsoft has PLENTY of time to wait before SONY's numbers become threatening enough to provoke an attempted price coup. But even MS decides to drop the price sooner, rather than later, it won't be because they were FORCED by SONY-- it'd be because MS decided it was time to absolutely take the gloves off... And, I agree with an earlier statement, they'll probably wait til Natal is ready, to undermine SONY's oft repeated "best value" claims... but if they drop the price earlier than Natal's release, it's still their decision to make: Microsoft isn't backed into any corners...

Sony SHOULD have capitalized on the outset of all the RROD errors.... if a serious PS3 price drop occurred around the peak of the RROD issues, we'd all be having a much different discussion now... unfortunately, Sony COULDN'T afford the drop then, so... C'est La Vie... opportunity knocks but once...

this is going to be another Patcher day on the 'Stiq....

at any rate I hope for their sake its a REAL price cut and not getting rid of a SKU then dropping the higher SKU in its place...unless the completely phase out the arcade....

if they keep the Arcade I believe it should be brought down to $150, the "elite" brought down to $250....but I don't see any of that happening until Natal comes out, and even then they might just phase out console only SKUs and go to a console+natal SKU. The reason I say that is because MS hasn't had THAT many SKU's really, leading me to believe that they want to try to keep their shelf space simple

In all seriousness, I highly doubt MS will ever make a slimmer version of the 360. I do believe that MS will make a new xbox (720?) before they ever consider making a slimmer version of the 360.

My question to all you stiq'ers out there is:
Do you think Sony will make a PS3 "Slimmmer"? I don't think Sony is done with the PS3 and I believe they will make a slimmer version. Any thoughts?

I am currently holding out on the PS3 cause a baby is on his way.

I wouldn't be suprised, I mean I bought my 360 arcade for 150$ no tax on one of those no tax weekends at superstore (CDN)

thats about 70 bucks lower then usual. I see sales all the time for $150, never do I see the PS3 below MSRP, must either mean better margins or Microsoft encourages sales.

BestBuy over here had the 360 arcade on for 150$ probably 3 or 4 times this year, it lined up once with Superstores no tax weekend, and they price matched it. Unfortunately it only had 256mb memory card which is nearly full by the NXE and the upgrade plan that was advertised here was expired.

I bought my 20Gb PS3 at Superstore on a No Tax day in 2008. It was going for $299, then I had a coupon for $30 off any purchase over $250, so that brought it down to $269 with no tax. Sweetest deal on a PS3 ever, granted that its the 20GB model which had no wireless or anything. Still loving it though.
