Tecmo's Gears of War clone is no longer a PS3 exclusive. During a recent interview in Tokyo, Tecmo revealed that Quantum Theory will also be coming to Xbox 360 in Spring 2010. That's the same North American release window given to the PS3 version, which is currently 70% complete. While Tecmo has traditionally focused on making engines and games exclusively for one system at a time, Quantum Theory is being developed on an unnamed internal PC-based engine designed to make multiplatform development easier, much like Square Enix's Crystal Tools. However, we still have our doubts about the engine: the latest build we saw of Quantum still suffered from performance issues.
Quantum Theory has been largely panned, not just for its gameplay but its rather uninspired look. However, Tecmo responded to these claims, saying they can provide a unique look for the genre. "One of the ways we're looking at differentiating Quantum Theory and one of the things that we can bring to the genre is an emphasis on story, art and visuals," Tecmo's Producer Makoto Shibata told us. "Most third person shooters are military-based and kind of brown. We're trying to bring more color and beauty ... We think this kind of style is kind of unique to us, and says about what Tecmo can do differently," Shibata added, noting that over half the art staff is female.
There are some decidedly Japanese gameplay elements, including a mechanic that's been described as "R-Type-esque." The AI-controlled female partner is, in many ways, exactly like the arcade shooter's Force: players throw her to inflict massive damage via her melee attacks. Ridiculous? Certainly, but it's quite possibly the most original thing Quantum Theory has going for it.

Unless a game is about a cyborg punk rocker, the main charater shouldn't be named 'Sid'... especially 'just Sid'.

3rd party exclusives are so passe this generation, especially with the rising cost of game development.
If this game uses a PC-based engine, a PC port should be really quick and easy no? More games should use these engines, so the PC and consoles get treated well.

Maybe they can cancel it for 360 before it sees the light of day?
One can hope.

By replacing brown with grey or blue? My mind = fucking blown.

Oh my god, I was so looking forward to not buying this on PS3, damn, not I have to not buy it on 360 as well, life truly sucks sometimes.....

I guess that makes me a fanboy, because in my selfishness, I didn't want 360 owners to have the joys of not buying it along with me :D

I dont care much about the title losses. The devs for these games SHOULD be able to get the extra bucks for being on both consoles. My issue is that I dont see many games coming from Xbox to PS3. I would really like to see Fable shift over. I COULD buy a 360 for Fable, but that's the ONLY game I have interest in.
That game aside (and only mentioned because its my own interest) are there any games that other people like leaving Xbox exclusivity?

Halo is always fun, but it's not worth buying a console for, nor is gears really, I think the 360 would be a reasonable purchase if you are willing to pay for gold, personally I am not, but games like mass effect 2 and the new splinter cell are keeping me intrigued. Hopefully my friend with a 360 will buy them.

wow, Tecmo totally bitched out.
Well, at least it wasn't somebody like Naughty Dog that did that. If that day ever comes, I'll be really unhappy.

So giving as many gamers as possible the game and getting as much money as possible for making a game constitutes as "bitching out"?
And Naughty dog CAN'T make games for the 360, sony owns them. Even if they did though, why would that hurt you?

^ I just think it's a vote of "no-confidence" when a game suddenly goes multi-plat, when it's originally an exclusive (like this title). Not that I feel like platforms should hoard exclusives.
Don't take the whole naughty dog thing too seriously, I was just shooting my mouth off. It's more akin to the next MGS going multi-plat.

This isn't really something Xbox 360 gamers really want to be particularly proud of. But if it helps them sleep at night. If this game had proven to be anything comparable to Gears of War, we as PS3 fanboys would have been seriously insulted. However, its as is said, this game doesn't have enough appeal to sell PS3's. Therefore, Tecmo's lack of faith in Quantum Theory isn't very comforting to come out and say that. Its not even a timed exclusive. Sony didn't even bother to make a deal. Much rather, I'm sure Tecmo talked it over with Sony and Sony said, "Alright, we understand." So Tecmo is expecting 360 gamers to be gullible enough to buy this up and think its comparable to Gears of War.
In case anyone hasn't been keeping up, at TGS, those who played this game explained it as being clunky, and not the Gears of War clone that everyone had expected. But its going to be a flop.
See, the PlayStation 3 is known for its QUALITY exclusives. Tecmo appearently wasn't able to to live up to the standard PS3 exclusives have held. (Say what you want about Lair, but it was fine and also an early attempt.) Cliffy B, for the most part, you still remain nearly undefeated. Army of Two wasn't any good, I think Tecmo's just confirmed its lack of faith in Quantum Theory, but.... Uncharted 2: Among Thieves still has the better cover system with maybe only 15% of the cover frustrations Gears of War and Gears of War 2 had.
Again, for 360 fans, this isn't anything to be excited about, unless you really wanna play anything less than Gears and say its just as good. Then have it, but... If Tecmo's gonna say that, then somethings wrong and 360 is getting yet another mediocre title to clutter its console.

Fine by me, I was 100% not interested in this game, so I won't be playing no matter which of my systems its on. At least if the game is good, though, it won't suffer from the 360-to-PS3-port-oops-we-don't-know-what-the-fuck-to-do-with-a-PS3 syndrome from a while back. As far as I've heard porting a game from PS3 to 360 ends up as a better product on both ends, so those who will like this type of thing may have something to look forward to.

So putting color in a FPS is a game changer? Good thing this generation was all about the graphics...
Posted: Dec 7th 2009 7:18PM CaramelZappa said
Nah, every generation has a significant graphical leap. The major thing that differs this generation from previous ones is online play. Sure, the xbox, ps2, and gamecube all technically had online functioning but in this generation online multiplayer plays a huge part in almost every game.

GAME SUX!
not original and a total rip of gears (which is fine, but cmon do it better than gears if u have to)
Story sux so far, from what i can see from the trailers. (totally unappealing)
oh and 1 more thing, y is it these asian action games the art always looks the same. the spikey hair, some wierd ass chick running around with crazy retarded moves.
the architecture, weapons and armor, pretty much spikes everywhere and looks the same.
now to just keep an eye out for a gun blade... LOL J/K
but seriously, you know when u see a game in development and know ahead of time that its gonna fail? (Damnation, Hellgate London and Too human, we're looking at you) well this is one of those titles.
was never a purchase and never will be.

Comparing the sidekick girl to the R-Type Force is truly one of the funniest analogies I've heard in a while. So, uh, does she attach to the front of your . . . ship?
By the way, the note about Joystiq Japan staff member ittousai conducting the interview has me curious: is there anyone at Joystiq Japan named "Battousai"?
