Because it hast the obligatory characters and overlaying game mechanic that all of the series except possibly Zelda II shared.

Its your standard entertaining "Several hundred years ago an ancient evil was sealed away with substandard magic by a counsel of shortsighted elders and placed upon it was a sticky not that read, do not open until the Apocalypse" Zelda experience :)

still not sure myself whats with all the Windwaker love and Twilight Princess hate .... but hell I enjoyed the temple of the ocean king so ..... go figure

I understand it's themed as Zelda, I guess I should say I'm not thrilled that this is the sequel. Still cute and looks fun though. Knowing Nintendo, it's probably still awesome, gameplay-wise.

I got scared there after reading that first paragraph, thinking the game wasn't very good and you were going to trash it. Phew! That closing statement makes me want it even more now.

"Spirit Tracks is the most fun I've had with a Zelda game in a long time...This is also a game in which Princess Zelda and Link share a sincere high-five."

Nice.

That's basically the closest he'll ever really get to getting any. Seriously, why is almost every Nintendo hero totally denied by the lady-types? Mario has saved Peach's life somewhere around 12 billion times, and all she does is kiss him on the cheek. And he gets off on that!

Because, perhaps:

a) This is an all ages game.
b) Just maybe not every single story has to have sex in it?
c) They're 12.
d) Preserving a little bit of innocence might not be a bad thing.

Take your pick.

@Martin Greenberg:

Good point. The interesting thing is: Peach has also kissed Bowser and Booster, and they didn't even have to save her life! Of course, she wasn't even on a first-name basis with Mario yet; she still went by Toadstool at the time.

I realize this is a joke, but wouldn't Zelda and Link being a couple sort of screw up the game's legacy? I mean, isn't each Zelda a descendant of the previous one? I'm not sure about Link though. I guess if they're just random boys who just happen to wear green tunics for whatever reason when the Triforce of Courage manifests within them or something it would work. Otherwise it would be... weird.

Even though the game is good, JC's review highlights a bigger issue at hand...Zelda needs an overhaul, bad. It may not have hurt this game, but I'm seeing more and more people who are getting tired of the same old formula that really goes all the way back to the SNES.

I'm hoping the next Wii game will change it up, but I'm worried they'll just add motion+ sword swinging and call it innovation. Do something really drastic that will get attention...go big or go home as they say.

I'd like that, but most people don't seem to appreciate big changes in a series. Look at all the whining that the incredible Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts generated just because it wasn't a collectathon platformer like the previous two titles. Now multiply that by ten thousand since Zelda fans are insane. Remember the reaction when GameSpot dared to give Twilight Princess an 8.8? Imagine the reaction a Zelda game that doesn't play like other Zelda games would cause.

For some reason, I think the next game for the Wii will be somewhat of a departure from the traditional or an overhaul of some sorts. I get the feeling that Nintendo knows that it's time to mix things up and with motion plus, they can incorporate new controls over a newer design and/or theme.

At least, I hope they realize that they should make some new changes. Ifthey just do the same old thing, but with new controls... well... damn. I'm still buying it day one, haha. BUT, they should change things up.

If they change Zelda the shit will hit the fan. I guarantee internet riots.

You remember what happened when they announced cel shaded Zelda? It'd be more severe.

It doesn't mean they won't do it though. After all Nintendo fanboys were about to die from rage when Wind Waker was announced, and now years later after having seen a newer game go back to the old OoT style realise that Wind Waker was for the best. Same happened when Revolution was changed to Wii.

People don't like change until it has happened, and once it has happened they sometimes come to realise it was necessary.

They can do whatever the hell they want as long as I get at least 8 dungeons. Ideas in MM and TWW were okay, but they totally slopped off when it came to dungeons and "Main" game length.

That's what Zelda is to me. The dungeons and exploration. If they rip out the heart, it isn't Zelda anymore. If I didn't want to play Zelda, why would I be playing a new Zelda? It makes no sense.

@Otis Whitaker
I don't think, you'll get your 8 dungeons. Nintendo seems to be sick of coding more than 4 into each title. The last Zeldas with a decent amount of dungeons and puzzles were the Oracle games and i'm not even sure if Nintendo did any of the design or how much was done by Capcom staff.

On the other hand, what we're getting is more action on the overworld. Like in Twilight Princess I guess we'll have more puzzles in the open like that sequence with the dominion rod or the snowboarding, the bulbin fight etc. I'm still undecided if this is a good thing or a bad thing though. I guess that's the direction, the console titles take while we'll just have to live with the handheld ones slowly becoming the kind of handheld game, you can't play on the bus/train (sort of ironic, isn't it?) because of their gimmicky nature.

Hey, wait a second! Where's the reflexive tmac downvoting for making a cogent, salient point?

And while there might be virtual riots, I think a change on the order of the one from the original "Zelda" to "Adventure of Link" might be called for. I love Zelda, but the last one I finished and wasn't bored by was "Ocarina."

I'm not too concerned about whether a franchise series has new gameplay mechanics or not. I'm much more concerned with how well those mechanics are implemented otherwise it'll affect how much I enjoy the game.

There is a reason why they are so fun... the current design works so well
If they try to change it Reggie is gonna convince them to slap in every wii peripheral possible. Like that spinning disk from twighlight princess would HAVE to be controlled with the balance board

The problem is Nintendo is kind of stuck trying to find a balance here. If they go too far, you'll get a Wind Waker reaction. If they don't change enough, you get a Twilight Princess reaction.
With regards to what JC mentioned at the beginning of his review...some of those things (the instrument) are tradition. I suppose they could go, but they're a long running staple of the series and in some ways as important as the basic weapons at this point (although TP didn't really have an instrument, except for the grass reeds).
Other things, like the sidekick and faster transportation, are more like necessities than anything else. It's a pain to traverse the overworld on foot after a while; the sidekick is just a build-in hint system. Some people might find it annoying that they're being given hints, but I guarantee that others sure don't.
That said, I could live without the whole 'do these tasks to get your sword' things. THAT can go.

Really, all Zelda NEEDS to change is it's basic structure and, as a result, the way it tells it's story. Aonuma has already said in a bunch of interviews recently that they're changing the dungeon>overworld>dungeon structure for next Zelda game on Wii, so that's sounds pretty promising to me.

So, did anybody read the recent post here quoting, er, Aonuma I think, who said they were making significant changes for the next Wii Zelda? I mean, you might not believe him, because it depends how you define significant (that's not the word he used either because I'm not going back to check it, but then it was in Japanese so whatever).

Personally I love Zelda and I'm happy with incremental changes (a special 'cool feature' each time, like the wolf-form for Twilight Princess, etc, but same overall gameplay structure)... but if they want to make some bigger changes then maybe that would make me even happier, as long as they do it with the same level of polish and effort that Nintendo apply to almost all their big-name franchises.

The problem with changing the gameplay is that it's stayed similar because it's pretty much perfection. Complete dungeon, get new power you need to complete the next dungeon; simple and beautifully manages the learning process. (Since obviously if they threw a new player in with all the items in dungeon 1 it would be an impossible nightmare.) They mix and match the actual powers a bit, but there's only so many ideas you can come up with like that, I'd think. Within that same format, sure you could make it like Metroid Prime or something, but um, I'd rather they leave that to Metroid Prime. And things like using hearts for a life bar, having you do sidequests for heart containers, fairies in a jar - also a very neat mechanic. Just because it was neat back on SNES or whatever doesn't mean it isn't still neat now :) But still - if they want to change this I'm open to it. If they want to really, dramatically change it, though (like say, make it into a more traditional RPG with skill trees or something) then um, no thanks. Not that I think there's much chance of that.

Btw - about the Capcom games - I always assumed those were pretty much done by Capcom and just approved by Nintendo, like Capcom 'here's the plan', Nintendo 'um sorry but we need you to take out the Zora sex scene', Capcom 'oh okay well how about this', Nintendo 'fine', Nintendo involvement now over. Could be wrong though. :)

Nintendo is always at their best when they take the controversial path. Just look at majora's mask or the first metroid prime. From some of the comments that they have regarding the wii zelda they're working on, they understand that they need to do something outside of the ocarina of time approach this time around. If they follow through, we may have something truly fresh on our hands.

But those three franchises have pretty much infinite room to grow within their respective genres, as they've gone along. Certain structural things remain the same decades later, but other elements have changed, whether subtly or radically.

If you liked the original nintendo Zelda ( I personally loved it ) there is a "hacked" version of it where the guy made his own map, dungeons, even to some extent the monsters in it.

It's failry difficult, especially the hard mode (2nd playthrough) and I enjoyed it.

It's called Zelda: Outlands and you can download the rom and play it on an emulator. If you just want to check it out now, you can head here.
