Interesting review, but I agree that Zelda has become far too bogged down by tradition.

JC, since we agree there, but you also say that Spirit Tracks is good, then I think I might check it out...

This is the first Zelda since....LttP for GBA that I will not buy right away, and by right away I mean this is an xmas present.

Looking forward to using my DS again. I guess this will be it's last big hurrah for me.

I think I'm asking for it as an Xmas gift, too.

Although that has more to do with the fact that I spent WAAAAY too much money this year on gifts and stuff :\

This is really awesome and all and I'll probably pick it up some time. I really want another 3-d zelda though! I also want to have it built around the wii, unlike twilight princess, which was a great game, but was easily just as fun with a gamecube controller

Yeah the Wii needs a zelda game and the sooner they announce one and get some footage out the sooner I buy a Wii.

seeing as Twilight Princess was a Gamecube game that had a quick port to the Wii since the GC was past its console life expiration date, I still don't count Wii as having a zelda title yet.

The DS Zelda games aren't massive powerhouses when compared to their bigger badder console siblings, but they can sure stand their ground. I can even forgive their cartoony graphics (which I didn't care for that much in Wind Waker) Will hopefully be playing Spirit tracks by the end of the week :)

Picking this up tomorrow. I do think they're trying something different with having Zelda take a more active role in the game as a whole, and it's a direction i approve of. She's always hinted at being a character who was more competent than just another damsel in distress, but has never proven that from a gameplay perspective, except for little snippets in Wind Waker and Twilight Princess (and i think one of the CDi games, but, very fortunately, i know little about them)

oh, you're right about both. my mistake.

i can't say that there's a lot of things that they shook up with on phantom hourglass, since it continues a lot that was established by wind waker and just implemented touch controls into everything. if you gave me a choice of moving link with a stylus or a pad, i'd pick the pad.

If i had a chance to pick the D-pad over the stylus on Phantom Hourglass, I'd pick the stylus anyway. Firing arrows/bombs/whatever is much more accurate.

And the Boomerang was epic.

What can they do to change the formula? The whole metroidvania-style exploration works really well and it's basically the core of what zelda is about.

They could make it more cinematic and linear, but then it'd just be like loads of other games. They've already tried cell-shading it. They've switched the view from 3rd-person to overhead (for the DS). They've added countless mechanics.

It seems like the only real changes they could make would be the style of storytelling, and the characters. Making a more complex story, or making it not about saving the princess ;-). But you basically have to have Link and Zelda, so you're a little stuck there too.

But a more detailed story would be rather nice, one with a few twists and more motivations. And full voice acting. Other that that?

There has been a musical instrument included in almost every game since the very first Legend of Zelda game, not just since Ocarina of Time. Get your facts straight. And I wouldn't call it a rut but a time honored tradition.

Did anyone who's played this game get glitched in the sword training part? For some reason, Link's spin attack has no effect of the person you're supposed to hit and since I didn't save, I have to start all over again. Anyone else encounter this problem?

I would love a 2D Zelda, especially because I'm not a fan of these cartoony Zelda games, except for Windwaker.

I love the obligatory musical instrument in the every game...and I think the panflute was the most fun to play. Got this game for Christmas, and I'm still playing it.
