PS3 is getting yet another firmware update -- this time optional -- "very soon" according to a post on the European PlayStation.Blog. The pre-Christmas update brings a feature we reported on earlier: support for PSP Minis on the PS3. Like PSone classics, a single purchase from the PlayStation Store will work on both platforms. If you've bought a Mini and want to play it on your PS3, you'll be able to access it from the Store's archived Download List.
In addition to adding Minis support, update 3.15 will simplify the process of moving data from one PS3 to another. For example, if you own both a PS3 Phat and Slim, you'll be able to connect the two systems via a LAN cable and transfer data from one system to the next. For more details on how to do just that, visit the PlayStation.Blog.

I've been hoping for something like this. But I'd be happier if I could get full PSP games to work on PS3. There's quite a few PSP games I'd like to play but I don't want to get a PSP just to play them. At least this update is a good starting point.

This seems very cool. I'd like it if I could play PSP games on the PS3 as well, there's quite a few I'd like to play, but my psp is broken and I can't afford a new one. I want to play AC:Bloodlines and LBP and GTpsp and all those other new PSP games I've been missing for the past year and a half.

No. Minis were originally PSP only. PSP does not support trophies.
Maybe they'll a special PS3 trophy support in the future. But right now: no :(

Because they probably still want to sell PSPs.

The majority of games are still UMD-only, though, so you'd still need a PSP.
I know it's a pipedream, but I'd like to play PSP games on my PS3...

Why does that even needs being commented? That's pure not a pipedream. That's pure tautology.

I suppose now that the Go has got them to put more PSP titles on the store it means you have access to more games that can be played that way but I doubt they would give up the software like that with ease. If anything they will allow it ONLY for REGISTERED PSP owners and even then STILL charger $20+ just to have it.

I think it has more to do with maximizing the MINIs sale, so that more developers create for the platforms. In that way, Sony doesn't lose any money: the games are perfectly fit for on-the-go action so PSP users will still take them. Other than that: PS3 users who don't own a PSP now have a reason to download the titles and make Sony and the devs even more money. And maybe even an incentive to buy a PSP in the future when they buy a small library already. Also: the PS3 users would not buy the game in the first place so Sony doesn't lose any money with this step.
That's a win-win for all: Sony, devs and the users.
If Sony, on the other hand was to start allowing full PSP games on the PS3, they would lose hardware sales because, realistically: nobody will buy a PSP for a PSP Minis version of Tetris, but they might for a big, exclusive full title.

I think you two are idiots, he had a valid question. They had to have made a psp emulator for this, so why limit it to minis?

To answer your question, I'll quote the first reply here:
"Because they probably still want to sell PSPs." - archon. So yeah.

I tried outputting PSP via the built-in TV out. It's not really that bad. Jaggy and stuff but not horrible.
And I guess the PS3 will smooth the graphics or let you choose output modes or something.

I heard somewhere that it's going to do some kind of.. scaling/upconverting?
So they shouldn't look too terrible.

That's around PS1 resolution, but the PS3 just scales and smooths those out, so I'd say the same thing would happen for Minis.
Either that, or they run with a border around the screen, like the Super Game Boy did.

I think it should be noted that games and other content downloaded from the PS Store can be transferred to a second PS3 this way, but they will then be removed (by this process) from the original PS3. You will then have to activate the second PS3 for that content before it can be used. Keep in mind that a PS Store purchase enables you to run content on a limited number of activated PS3s; this data transfer ability is not going to circumvent that. If you want a game on both your PS3s, you will have to download it separately onto each machine.

Any chance you could clue a fellow fallen into how to back up manually? I still have the HDD from my frist ps3.

Unfortunately, you can't. I made that mistake the first time my old PS3 went tits up.
I thought I would just take out the HDD, and whack it in the newie.
Wrong.
Once you put it in another PS3, it wants to FORMAT the drive, to PAIR it with the new system, thereby losing everything.
Since then, (on new PS3), I backup periodically (using the systems own backup routine) to my external 250gb drive. I do this once every two weeks now.
So, all your data on your HDD you have there, is probably useless to you now mate.

I for one am more pleased with this update than 3.10. the option to be able to copy the saves and data over a LAN connection is good shit(Gigabit port FTW)
The Minis being playable on the PS3 will finally get me to bite on some of those as it will be an added value....

Figured I'd go ahead and get that one out of the way. The cross-game chat wouldn't be a requirement for greatness, just a perfect fit for me and my friends, as most of my gaming is now only a few hours per week with friends and it would be great to get to chat with them all. It's more of a preference, but I hope against hope that they'll have it out by February of next year. I feel like the PSN experience is damn close to being as streamlined as Live (for my tastes), and that one feature would put it over the top for me.

Cross game party chat needs to happen on ps3 very soon, it's a HUGE advantage 360 has over ps3. It's just more fun having 8 of your friends talking to each other while 3 of them are playing mw2 and the rest are playing various games.
I don't want to hear any excuse from a sony fanboy or anyone else, it simply needs to happen and it needs to happen asap.

excuse?? I have stated before I hated being in a party with people that were playing other games....its annoying as fuck to hear some talking shit about someone lag cheating in NBA2k10 while I'm playing Gears 2 with a couple of friends....I asked dude to kick him out but he wouldn't....so I just left the party....useless feature to me

there you go again Tmac, always acting as if what you say is word and everyone else is wrong.
Guess what, i don't really give a flying 747 f*ck about cross game chat because as Chris pointed out its pretty stupid to be playing Modern Warfare 2 while hearing my friends play Rock Band. Instead why don't i actually PAY ATTENTION to MY game to hear my teammates telling me where the enemy/bomb is and actually try to win a game as a team.
