Ha! Yes! He DOES look like Lord Zedd. Just attack a lightning bolt with a Z on top to his mask. I think they may have managed to top the cover art to MM9 with this one. It's SO outlandish!

Also: What? Sheep Man? Um... okay. This seems like one of the most specific themes for a Robot Master yet, and kind of stupid too. But I have to admit, though, he IS cute as a button.

I suck at Mega Man, still agree it's pretty awesome. But I think I only beat one level of MM9. Thank goodness this has an easy mode... I swear though, playing that game hurt my thumbs more than anything I've played in a while.

Playing megaman on easy mode just feels like cheating. I can maybe grasp it on these new games like 9 or 10, since you have to wonder if they made the normal mode harder just because they knew they'd be putting in any easy mode. But when I realized after 3 or 4 stages that I had been playing megaman collection on ps2 on easy mode, I felt like I hadn't accomplished anything at all. . . even though it was still pretty hard. I deleted my game and started over on normal mode. And then I cried.

I agree...when they finally made Mega Man 9, I thought, "Oh good, this finally fills that gap between Mega Man 8 and Mega Man X, so the sequels will finally make numeric sense." Now they're mucking it up with Mega Man 10.

Eh, well at least it'll be good I hope.

Luke, when Mega Man X came out the original series had only made it to Mega Man 6. X was never intended to be the roman numeral 10. I always took it to mean "experimental" like they do in experimental aircraft. In Maverick Hunter X, Dr. Light says that X represents the variable. This is also why the X sequels are numbered X2, X3, etc; not XII, XIII, etc. If X was meant to be a number, then I ask what happened to Mega Man 11?

Ha, but that's the same basic logic. FFX-2 is a sequel to FFX rather than a continuation of the whole franchise. We still have a FFXI. Of course, in this case X actually does mean 10.

@joe

fair enough argument, but how do you explain the Mega Man games for Game Boy (I - V) which use roman numerals for their numbering?

The GB Megaman games ended at MMV, so it's a non-issue. Plus, in Japan, they're known as Rockman World (to differentiate them from the Famicom Rockman games), and used the traditional Arabic numbers (1-5) for the titles.

@charlie b. What's to explain? Those are numbered with Roman Numerals. Mega Man X is not. Variables and Roman Numerals exist in the real world together, so why can't they exist in the video game world. Just pretend they used a different symbol instead of X to represent the variable. Think of it as "Mega Man λ"

Actually, X is a variable which can stand for anything. So, MegaMan 10 really isnt relevant

This is a win-win for the developers. They can get away with this sequel being a technical downgrade from 7 and 8 for instance because of "nostalgia" and because of that, will still sell well. The same wouldn't apply if the sequel to Madden or Call of Duty was 8-bit however.

I'd still like to have a new Mega Man game that isn't 8-bit, thank you very much.

Yeah I'm not a fan of devs doing this, it just screams lazy because they can't make a proper 3d one. Then again, I also want the past to stay in the past. Making not only a 2D game, but in the style of the NES in 2009 feels like regression to me. I want the industry to move forward, not backward.

Why can't they just do what Nintendo did for NSMB Wii. Make the game with updated graphics, and keep/improve the core gameplay.

Foetoid, i completely agree. and while they are at it, do that with Metroid! Other M looks sweet, but i want a Super Metroid style adventure done that NSMB style. especially after playing Shadow Complex. there's still a place in gaming for great side scrolling!

This is one of those circumstances where graphics really don't matter though. I can understand you wanting it in the 16 bit style that Mega Man 7 and 8 were in, but Mega Man is probably 80% gameplay and 20% graphics (not that those graphics were bad for the time). Most modern games like Modern Warfare wouldn't be able to get away with anything below 128-bit (hell, lets be realistic, anything less than HD) because thats the standard (at the very least) in graphics that gamers expect today.

Megaman doesn't have that problem though because it was originally created in the 8-bit form so this is more of a return to form than it is a retrofit. You may be right about the win-win situtation for developers but I'll take an NES-themed Megaman over 90% of games currently on the market any day.

@foetoid

Agreed. If they do change the visual style for the next one after 10, I'd like to see the same graphical approach Nintendo took to NSMBW rather than a 16-bit one.

"The same wouldn't apply if the sequel to Madden or Call of Duty was 8-bit however. "

That's simply because an 8-bit version of Madden or Call of Duty would probably suck. Platformers are probably one of the few genre that can get away with something like Megaman 9.

Hey, they did do 3D classic-style Megaman games. Maybe you've heard of them.

Megaman Powered Up
Megaman: Maverick Hunter X

And guess what? THEY BOMBED HORRIBLY. Remakes, sure, but they had plenty of new content to make them more than worth the purchase. But because sales were so bad, plans for MMPU2 and MHX2 were canned.

If you were a Capcom exec, would you really take that route again?

@Setai:
There's no such thing as 128-bit. At least, when it comes to processors.

Wrong. PSP launched in late 2004 in Japan, early 2005 elsewhere. MHX was 12/2005 Japan, 1/2006 US, 3/2006 EU. MMPU was 3/2006 for all regions.

"Make the game with updated graphics, and keep/improve the core gameplay."

They did that with Mega Man 7 and 8 and look at what happened. Just the fact that they added extra frames on animation and stuff kind of ruined the games.

That said, there's something called Mega Man 2.5D that someone was working on as a fan project. That's the only way I want to see Mega Man brought into the third dimension.
