Terrifying video game news site Rely On Horror claims to have recently gotten its hands on the next issue of Game Informer, which contains a pretty comprehensive breakdown of the new methods of Necromorph murder featured in Dead Space 2. According to the site, the Informer article reveals that the game's designers are trying to make the game spookier, placing hero Isaac Clarke (who learned the ability to speak between games, it seems) in more death-defying situations, and likely a few impossible-to-defy-death situations as well.
According to the report, the game's action has moved off of the Ishimura, instead placing Clarke on the similarly monster-infested interstellar city Sprawl, which dwarfs the original game's setting in size. Finally, the article supposedly ends with the developer dropping the following tease regarding multiplayer: "All I can say is it's really fun, and you'll get to strategically dismember your friends." Oh, man -- Bushido Laser-Saw confirmed! Or, rather, it might be confirmed. There's no way to tell for sure until we get our hands on the Clarke-covered magazine.

Great, another game that doesn't need multiplayer but will get one to attract the ADD folks over...then 2 months later when you try to get online to get inevitable multiplayer achievements you're left SOL because no one's playing this online anymore and all went back to MW2 or Halo.

Yeah unless your going to offer me a truly unique multiplayer experience I don't need yet another re-skinned area to shoot people in. Seriously in agreement with you here Tmac. Would much rather see more time spent on the single player campaign.

I'm with the grumpy old farts. The added multuplayer is worthless to me, and sadly will likely come at the expense of the story, the single thing that made the first Dead Space so good. Do we really need another online space for little boys to swear at each other and tell boobie jokes? Really?

How many times have things "sounded" awesome and then make you want to break your controller when you finally get to experience them?
Spot on, tmac. Dead Space 2 does not need multiplayer. If it gets multiplayer, I probably won't even touch it.
Glad to hear EA's firmly behind this sequel though.

when will this fad end?
They should instead, focus on improving the story, character development and acting. Those are the only things that need improving. If this game does not improve on those things, it will have failed as a successful sequel in my eyes.
When they reach "Uncharted" quality of story telling, then they should move on to MP modes.

Tmac, I have to agree with you, however let's see where this goes. I was one of those guys who thought Uncharted 2 would be ruined by multiplayer, but it still ended up being an amazing experience. Who knows, maybe EA will end up creating something fun and unique? As long as it doesn't take away from the singleplayer story, and as long as there aren't too many (or any) online tophies I think it'll be fine.

sorry to be the devil's advocate, but adding mutliplayer does create more perceived value to a consumer. It could be the deciding factor between purchasing a game or renting it. I hardly think that I'm in the minority who feel that its more of a challenge to justify a $60 game purchase knowing I'll gain about 10 hours of entertainment from it.

I understand what your saying, but I'm just saying to give EA the benifit of the doubt. I mean I don't think anyone here even excpected EA to put out such a high quality game as Dead Space. Maybe they'll surprise us all again and make an amazing muitplayer mode on top of an amazing singleplayer mode. Anyhow like I said before, as long as the singleplayer is awesome, I'm not too worried.

Why so pessimistic?I was a fan of the first game and when i heard about multiplayer i thought it could be cool if done right and would give me a reason to stay playing in the dead space universe as theres only so many times i can play the same campaign. As far as achievements go who honestly cares??

Dead Space had somewhat disappointing sales. Not bad sales but not amazing either, compared to how good the game is.
The multiplayer bit is probably a executive decision in order to sell more games. Of course the second game will sell better now that the first has a following, and thus it might be perceived that Dead Space 2 sold more than the first because of multiplayer, regardless if that is true or not.

i agree with the general concept of your comment even though i love multiplayer, but it wouldn't really be a tmac post without a bit of elitism, would it? "ADD folks." are you ever going to stop looking down on people who play multiplayer like peasants?

I agree. Multiplayer? In Dead Space? Isn't the point of the game supposed to be isolation and the fear/suspense resulting from it? Hence the name "Dead Space"?
All I could see is that Zero-G Basketball game being multiplayer simply as a quick diversion. They better not make MP achievements.
Oh and how exactly does "strategically dismembering" your friends fit into game lore? Typical engineer training of the future? MP for MP's sake ruins many a game.

to me, if u2 didnt have multiplayer, i would have sold it a long time ago because after playing through the single player 3 times there isnt anything left to do. i have over 70 hours in u2 MP. also in all honesty, i only keep games that have an online element since having a game collection doesnt interest me. id rather recoup any money i spent on a game that doesnt have any replay value after a few times through SP.
same will go for bioshock 2, dead space 2 and any other game that does this. if the multiplayer is decent, ill end up keeping it.

The only thing I think they need to improve upon is the 'horror' part of Survival Horror.
The game's only 'scary' parts were really only shock moments.

totally disagree with you. atmospheric horror is where it's at, just look at RE4. Very few shock moments, which I did love... but the entire was scary b/c you never knew what was around the corner. The game had that constant feeling of desolation and tension.
Also, to make a word on the multiplayer. This trend towards useless online multiplayer is one thing, but the trend I hate even more is the removal of local versus multiplayer. And I totally don't understand it, with so many fans of goldeneye out there, how people seem not to care? I know that most of my time with MW2 so far has been spent in the co-op missions, but an even larger amount of time has been spent with friends in the split-screen versus mode. It's so intense, yelling at your friends when they're right there with you; I can only imagine the intensity of dead space with local multiplayer. It seems that fewer and fewer games have it nowadays, and it makes me sad.

Not trying to be an elitist but Dead Space was not scary. Maybe after the first shock moments but afterward it became sooooo predictable. If its a necromorph just laying on the ground untouched or undismembered you can safely bet that it is probably going to jump up at you. The trend got old so fast. Horror does not have to lie in a"shock moment" where the scare tactic relies on random and sudden scare. It can be slow and disturbing like the old Silent Hill games or like the Regenerator from RE4 :P Man that thing was creepy.

When I heard the word 'multiplayer' associated with Dead Space I can only think how it worked out with RE 5. I don't really want that.
I hope it ends up being strictly a Horde/Survival multiplayer you can play with, at max, three other people online or off.
I just hope the devs don't forget that the series' strength is its singly player.

Yeah but you can strafe AND shoot in Dead Space. Competitive MP albeit small (4-6 players max) could be fun.
I'm just hoping for a survival/co-op section of the game. That would be awesome in so many way.

Why give him a voice now? I preferred his mute demeanour. I was able to put my own voice inside his head and add to the insanity.

I think they should have left him silent, too. Unless they are just giving him the ability to say, "oooooOOOOH SHIIIIIT!" or something like that, haha. That's probably all I would be saying.
Or possibly, "I'm gonna have me some fun. I'm gonna have me some fun..."

So for that to happen he needs a voice, I mean it would be different if he was mute and you could walk up to things and he would give you a little text description, even that would have let me know more about his character than his grunts..

I'm worried like hell about Isaac being vocal. Chances are he'll end up with "badass" one liners or being a whiny little bitch asking how this can happen to him all the time.
Isaac was the originals only character I liked, because he never complained, never said some cliché line that made you cringe and took it all like a man who does his days work even if it is less than pleasant.

Competitive multiplayer isn't really my thing, but I'm still interested in seeing what they pull off. I'd love to see a horde mode, or some human v. necromorph mode ala L4D. Regardless of what they do with it, the singleplayer is all I'm concerned with.

EA: But, strategic dismemberment is still a core game-play mechanic.

EA: You can even dismember your friends in the new multiplayer mode!

That is just about how it went for me. Too bad the changes will probably attract a crowd that makes the game sell more and thus validate the changes, in turn alienating people that enjoyed the first one for what it was.
I can already hear Isaac saying "Necromorph THIS!"

I really dont understand this whole bashing on the multiplayer when we don't even know what it is. Sure I understand that certain games dont need multiplayer or that its a waste of resources. But give the Developers some slack, let them explain to you what the multiplayer will be, THEN you can go ahead and bash at them all you want. All we can do now is speculate...
whew...'
Other than that, Id like to see a DS Horde Mode, or 1 vs 5... you know one guy is necromorph, the others are humans. When a human dies it turns into necro and so forth.

My connection isn't the greatest, I can play multiplayer games but I love single player only games more because I can do everything. I was really excited for Dead Space 2 because I played the first a lot, got all the achievements, and it was a really fun game. The idea that this game will have an additional multiplayer mode make me a little sad no matter what it will be, just because single player is way more important too me and as stated above it will probably die pretty quick. And there will be obligatory online achievements that will be incredibly annoying to get. And while we can only speculate what it is, more than likely it took some resources away from the single player so it will suffer for it. I'm not trying to bitch and complain and I'm sure the game will be awesome, I'm just kind of disappointed because I love epic single player only games.

Geez guys, don't go down the Bioshock path of forcing in MP where it doesn't need it! I couldn't care less about MP for this type of game.
Instead how about give me some coop/versus innovations much like Demon's Souls.
Imagine having coop where you are kept apart for the entire game (but you can only see each other), but what you do in certain area's can directly affect the others experience.
