Anybody else sort of suspect that this game can't possibly live up to the hype?

Shh, last time I was less than enthusiastic about this game, I got attacked by a mob. People are going to love it no matter what because it's new and fresh, regardless of it's flaws.

It definitely wont sell a ton. What it will do is prove sales don't matter for a game to be good.

Seriously. . . "To make the dancing girl move her elbow, press circle. Now make her lean her head to the left, push X"

WTF? Sounds exciting.

You know what? Sometimes extremely ambitious games live up to the hype (Rock Band, Braid), and sometimes they don't (Scribblenauts, Brutal Legend).

When a developer with a good track record is pushing some very creative ideas, I tend to get excited about it.

Maybe I'll feel more like a badass if I stop looking forward to the game, and start shitting on it. Let me try:

HEAVY RAIN? MOAR LIKE DRAGON'S LAIR 3, AMIRITE? QUANTIC DREAM THINKS I'M GOING TO "PRESS X TO FORM EMOTIONAL BOND" LOLOLOL

Nope, didn't work, just made me feel like a bit of a douche.

I don't think it will live up to the hype. But I sure will enjoy it immensely. I loved Indigo Prophecy, and this looks to be -- in every way -- better.

@Carmel

I have a feeling the game will have a metacritic score in the high 70's-low 80's and might move 175k units in itsvrelease window.

I all I rember was some people saying it's best for the game to come out before you judge the entirety of it's content from a few bit sized snippets. Some of what's been shown won't even be in the final product. I'd hardly say it was a mob mentality attacking you. I'm just glad there are still developers that aren't afraid of taking risks and playing it safe. I don't know that I'd even say this game has a lot of hype ... Certainly not as much as forza 3, uncharted 2 and modern warfare 2 did and for most they all lived up to or exceeded their hype. I think the one game that overachieved (to me anyway) was assassins creed 2.

You were critical of the animations weren't you?

@J#5

I was critical on the animations and more importantly the voice acting. It just bothers me that the whole point of the game is to tell a great story and the key to that is believeable characters. When oher games have done believable characters better without it being the key focus, it just makes me wonder about the overall quality of the game. While it's true that you can't judge the overall experience from little snippets, I still think the complaints are relavant. A game where the actual gameplay isn't the core focus needs exquisite attention to detail in order to truly shine, in my opinion. MGS4 shined because in the cutscenes, where everything was brilliantly animated and the voice acting was great, you could really get into the story (as goofy as it was).

That said, it still looks good, and I'll probably end up buying it because like you said, it's great when devs try something new. Also have to give credit to sony to publishing things like this when there's a high chance it won't sell as well as other titles.

you will buy a PS3 for this game... you should anyway... I'm a hardcore XBOX fanboy and I'm buying a PS3 to play this game (and a little bit of Uncharted, Metal Gear, and LBP)... it feels so wrong... but it feels so right.

Had both a Wii and a 360 for well over a year before I recently got the PS3. Great games, I've been playing a lot of LBP. For me that's basically all console choices really boil down to nowadays, what games you want to play. There's going to be sweet exclusives on each. If you have that kind of leisure cash and gaming is a hobby worth spending it on to you, you can't go wrong!

Good point on the exclusives, I doubt here will be another price drop in Q1/Q2 2010 so I guess at long last it's time. Besides, this game just looks too fresh to ignore, conceptually that is.

It's worth it. I just got one after the price drop and couldn't be happier. With the onslaught of great exclusives coming out it's going to be the console I play the most for a while.

That's much too close to Final Fantasy XIII to make me happy. I'm really looking forward to Heavy Rain, but if I have to choose between Heavy Rain and Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy is winning.

No biggy, though. I'll just buy it later on.

In a seven-week period, I'll be getting Mass Effect 2, Splinter Cell, Heavy Rain, and Final Fantasy 13.

That's a pretty damn amazing start to 2010, considering there were no retail releases in 2009 that I was remotely interested in until Batman at the end of August.

So yeah, I'll have to space these out over the first half of the year, but I expect I'll hit Heavy Rain early since it will have a shorter playthrough time than ME2 or FF13.

Let's see, if it's going to be released in Europe on 26 February 2010, that means the release date in North America is...2001. It's already been discontinued. That's why we don't see it on store shelves.

This game is intended for mature games players who enjoy narrative and are willing to forgo an element of interactivity for a richer and more believable world.

The hype being generated for this game isn't that it is the best, most fun video game ever, it's that its being made for adults who live in the real world.

Its not hyped except among core gamers. Hardly any ads yet, and its getting a lot of attention because its new. And they deserve attention just for that, had enough of the umpteenth shooter or racing games. It may not sell 5 million, but then, even games like Mass Effect and Uncharted sold 2-2.5 million.
