Hmm...

"I'd argue that Splosion man and L4D2 both offer better co-op experiences because they force you to actually work as a team. "
"My point is f you're competing, that's not co-op. It's vs, or a race, or whatever. Co-op means working together. Cooperatively."

I think in this sense, NSMB is the game that ACTUALLY forces you to work together. You COULD work as a team or you COULD be a dick and turn on each other. You have a choice and within that choice lies a greater possibility for having to truly work together, you know?

Back in the day in the SNES and Sega Genesis years, we had games that were co-op...

You could help each other get through levels... or you could kick each other's *** and piss everyone off...

You could help each other find the secret room... or you could just throw your partner into a pit full of enemies...

I grew up in that generation of "co-op". And that is still what co-op means to me.

A friend isn't just the one who helped you along your journey, he's also the one that said "race you there!"...

NSMBWii is a darn good way to bring those times back. (yes, there are other co-op games in existence like that, but hardly any of them allows you to be creative on how to screw each other up)

And still the Trolls say that Wii's are collecting dust. Then why this game and others are selling so well...

This is a great game, just wish I they replaced the second toad with a Boomer or smoker or Francis.

They should of replaced the second Toad with Wario. But also give you more of a selection really.

Miyamoto has this fixation on characters being bound to their role in the gameplay, which in this case draws up as a double-edged sword. He said at one point "if we had included Peach, she would have had to float with her dress, if we had included Wario he would have needed a fart attack"

Which of course is false. They could do whatever they damn well please with these characters, but the point is that this is where their otherwise genius character design philosophy comes around to hurt them.

I also really wish they would have allowed the single-player mode to have its choice of characters, at least after you beat Bowser, like they had in NSMB DS

It always seems to go best for them when with the bridge games. Because then they can get opening-week sales similar to the other AAA releases, but pick up legs like Wii Fit and run on those legs for a long, long time.

I really want to play this and TvC, but I just can't justify a Wii purchase for only 2 games. Help me out folks.

So is this game Super Mario World good?

NSMBW uses just the Wiimotes correct?

Are component cables easy to come by for the Wii?

First, there are many other games that can justify a Wii purchase: Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Zelda Twilight Princess and Mario Kart Wii are just the beginning. You have many sports games, and even more mature games like Metroid Prime, No More Heroes, Madworld and the new Silent Hill. Games that play like no other, like PES, any driving game, WarioWare, Boom Blox, etc.

Super Mario World? That game is gold.
Yes, NSMBW uses just the Wiimotes.
Component cables are easily findable.

And best of all, everyone can play Wii, and WiiSports is the perfect way to begin.

LOL no, I didn't want a sales pitch. I know what games are out there. I'm only really interested in NSMBW(and TvC, but I'd rather wait for a Capcom Vs game to come to the Xbox). I thank you for answering my questions, but I think you misunderstood my first question, which was the most important to me.

I guess what I meant was is NSMBW as fun as Super Mario World?

I grew up with all the original SMBs and I want to play the new one but I have the feeling I'll be let down.

Mm, hard to tell. If you can play multiplayer, then it will be something different and totally fun for you. Now, if you only play single player, my opinion is that Super Mario World keeps above, basically becasue NSMBW gameplay is simpler (something like the first SMB) in terms of enemies and level structures. But it's fun, I wasn't let down by this game, I really enjoy it a lot.

You know what would've been cool though, if instead of a Toad, Wario or Peach, they came up with an original playable character. Some one completly new to the Mario universe. NSMB Wii and DS both didn't expand on the roster. I think every other Mario adventure has added a new character or race. We did get new suits though.

@Fun DMC -- I did say friends, but I've played the game with younger siblings, parents, friends and my significant other, and they've all had a blast with it.

I also had a great time playing Borderlands co-operatively (until that trashy, abortive ending) but that was an online-only affair for me. I know it does split-screen co-op on consoles, but it strikes me as a game that benefits more from each person having a dedicated screen for inventory management, leveling up and so on. What I said was that New Super Mario Bros. Wii was "the best *local* co-operative experience you'll have all year" and I stand by that statement.
