it seems like the people who write these articles have no idea what they are talking about.

unless they work for sony ... you DONT know the prices they are paying ... when you order parts by the 100,000 (probably even more) ... you cant just multiply the normal price... companies negotiate their own prices for contracts such as this.

Funny you should comment on how people talk about things they don't know about...

These are people that know the manufacturing industry. You can only can give so much of a discount based on parts ordered. These figures are quite realistic and close. Is it something to set your watch by? No, but it certainly paints a picture of Sony losing/gaining a little or breaking even.

Sony only confirmed before how much it was losing on the PS3 earlier and it's not like that's a "smart" business antic as it makes investors nervous.

So again, give them a little credit.

My friends three year old PS3 is running fine so far with no errors what soever, my launch one got stolen, so I got a Slim this Black Friday which runs cool and quiet. And I think your confusing the PS3's(the BEST Blu-ray player, as it will automatically update to every new BD Profile, AND it plays games AND it has a 0.1% failure rate) failure rate and disk problems with the 360's.

But its funny though, all my friends have gone through atleast 2 360s, my year old one is still good.
Hopefully they both last a while.

It's worth $300 if you've been living in a cave and still don't have a means to play blu-ray discs or stream media in living room or play current gen video games, otherwise its totally redundant except for a few exclusive titles. Well, that's living in a cave by Joystic/Engadget standards.

Well I don't see where your argument about how the PS2 ended up getting DREs fits in any of this. Did they make the PS3 by taking a PS2 by replacing the DVD drive and upgrading the ram, graphics card, CPU ? Don't think so, that's what R&D is for, and from what I've read the PS3 and PS2 have two completely different hardware configurations.

As for concerns about some problem that *may* develop, that's the same for every other piece of electronic equipment out there. So your comment, while insightful with plenty of references, was pointless.

Well, I'm pissed off at MS AND Sony for their hardware fuckups, Sony moreso because they still aren't acknowledging it as their fault and charging $150+ for repair for out of warranty units which breaking the most.

Sprinkles hates the PS3 but that cocksucker never lost the money I did from my PS3, and I don't hate Sony like that creature does. : (

PSN is non existent? is this 2005, when the PSN didn't even exist, because today PS3 exclusives look BETTER, play BETTER and just feel BETTER. Multi plats are the same, but PS3 wins since it's free online. BUT... Party chat is the reason I get SOME multi plats like COD on 360, that, and the controller is better for FPS.

Hey can you just shut the fuck up? Seriously, can't fuckin get a clue? This is the Sony PS3 section, what the fuck are you doing here taking crap?

"pieces of shit - enjoy more than likely having paid extra for your console (what with the system being $100+ more than it's competitor for 95% of the time it's been on the market) to get what's been proven is lower graphical quality in a game"

And by the way you idiot. The PS3 has everything built in, so what the fuck are you talking about? The only add-on whore here is the 360, wifi, HDD that costs more than a fucking laptop HDD, which fits a PS3 ty very much. I dont talk shit on what other people like , because its a fucking OPINION.. you can't CHANGE our minds so wtf are you doing ? Just stfu! I will however, talk shit on people like you who talk random crap like if MS was paying you to spread idiocy across Joystiq. Just STFU and stay the fuck away from this section and enjoy your FUN MULTIPLAYER..Oh wait, I guess its not as fun as you say it is since your ass is here talking bullshit, and you just want to try and justify your $50 wasted on ADS and Addon machine. Who's the one over paying now ?

Seriously? That was the stupidest fucking argument I've ever read. By your own logic I sure as shit hope you never buy a MS product because the RRoD is going to be inherent in every single product MS puts out forever and ever. I'm surprised Gamestop didn't promote your ass to be the king of all tools.

@ Matt,
Your attacks on the PS3 are unwarranted. I take back what I said. You're just a Sony hater out here to make a point. First you take a cheap shot at the PS3's build quality. Anyone could tell you that the PS3 is built like a tank - I've dropped it a couple of times, let it roll around in the car while I was driving, hit it a bunch of times and never once have I opened it up or even wiped a cloth on it. But it still runs without a single problem.

Next, you continued to piss over PSN for reasons unknown. Yes, Live is superior in some ways but you also have to pay for it. I don't give a shit if its less than 3 bucks a month, you have to pay the entire $50 upfront if you want access to gold. 50 dollars is a lot of money for a college student like me, especially when I can have everything I want from a console online service for free with PSN.

PSN supports my every need - game demos, addons, free multiplayer games, movies, TV shows - you name it. You might argue that Live has more people on it, and hence it's automatically better. But a majority of the popular online games are 12v12, 9v9, 10v0 and the biggest one so far is 30v30. I've never had to wait more than a minute to find a match, so what's the problem? Heck I've even managed to find people playing really old shitty games like Timeshift online. Cross game chat would be nice, but I can live without it for now.

So tell me, how exactly is Live 10000X better than PSN? You make things sound much worse than they are, which leads me to believe that you're one of those blind PS3 haters that never got around to opening their eyes back from the early '07 days. (I was one too).

Did you play Shadow of the Colossus? Did you experience the end? What possible sequel could they make (not to mention that Ico is the narrative sequel to SOTC).

If they ever make a Shadow of the Colossus 2, I will cry.

Can't spell Colossus right.

Team ICO is one of the few developers out there NOT recycling the same crap that made them a buck last time. I'm frankly glad they're making "The Last Guardian" and not a SotC2. With Team ICO, I cannot guess what a sequel would entail. Contrast to Insomniac Games, where I know they're either making a Ratchet sequel or Resistance sequel. Or Naughty Dog, who's now stuck on Uncharted games. Or any other developer who is stuck on franchises. WIth Team ICO, the only limit on a sequel is my imagination(and a vague connection to the previous 2 games).

Solace, that's a retarded statement. Explain how Sony leading gaming is better than Nintendo or Microsoft doing it. You wouldn't even have Playstation if it hadn't been for Nintendo. Everyone brings different strengths to the table, to dismiss that due to some serious mental issues involving a piece of electronic equipment is pretty fucking crazy.

MS strengths is just their online gaming, nothing more. They charge $50 per account just to get online even on one console. Proprietary accessories is another thing that bugs me, and most of their games are uninspiring and plain. As for the Wii, rehash after rehash. Same ol' bullshit you've always seen but now with waggle.

Sony is still leading the way for gaming as a whole and none of you can deny that.

Fanboyism = increased interest in articles on Joystiq. Just look at the number of comments on anything remotely linked to the competition between PS3 and 360. And the more people that view the page, the more money Joystiq will generate from advertisements.

In that aspect, any raging fanboy is a potential goldmine for Joystiq. Banning Sprinkles was akin to Joystiq cutting of it's own toe. A smelly and ugly toe indeed, but nonetheless a toe.

I doubt sony would put any weight on online play at all if MS hadn't paved the way. They certainly didn't invent it, but they definitely popularized it on consoles. The PSN is still lagging behind XBL in terms of features and structure, and it's clear that it's not Sony's priority.

If sony was "leading" and MS had disregarded online gaming as well, I doubt I'd be that into console gaming at all anymore.

All three companies bring something good to the table, and despite whichever one is "leading" they all have a good amount of sales and all bring us different games. MS being on top for a while is helping push sony to release more great games, so you should probably just enjoy the competition.

Here I go, feeding the troll but I can't help myself....

MS did not, of course, invent online console gaming; but what they did do was redefine the home gaming console as a social experience with XB Live. And make no mistake, the PSN you see today would not be where it is without the competition from Live; just as the 360 wouldn't be what it is without what the PS2 did for gaming last gen.

The software comment is inane as well; while I'd like to see them have more success with more diverse titles MS has published a few overlooked gems this gen. Viva Pinata 1&2, Banjo Kazooie N&B, both excellent titles, did not get the commercial success they deserved. Kameo (look at the Rare theme emerging) was a fun 'Zelda-lite' title as well. Project Gotham 3 & 4 are outstanding as well. Add in their big hits like Halo 3 and Gears and they have a solid profile.

If Sony hadn't been so woefully shortsighted they wouldn't be where they are right now. I've always maintained that if they'd launched the same year with a similiar price - or even a year later as they did with a reasonable price - this gen in terms of console sales would look very different. Kudos to them for recovering in the last 18 months, the PSN is so much better (though still behind Live) and the games much better and coming more consistently. Again, that doesn't happen without the competition from the 360 - so you should be thanking them.

Be a fan, not a fanboy -there's enough dumb in the world already.
