One of the least surprising "World Exclusive" reveals during last night's Video Game Awards show was the unveiling of Harmonix's next single-band opus, Green Day: Rock Band. In case you missed out on the late-to-the-party announcement, you can check out the debut trailer after the jump. If you don't feel like watching a streaming video at the moment, we'll summarize: It looks a heck of a lot like when you play those Green Day DLC songs on Rock Band 2.
The MTV Games press release that landed in our inbox shortly after the trailer aired contained one particularly interesting piece of news -- unlike The Beatles: Rock Band, all of the tracks in Green Day's outing will be exportable to the core Rock Band games. In addition, all the Green Day DLC released so far for the music platform, as well as the three 21st Century Breakdown tracks that will hit this Tuesday, will be compatible with Green Day: Rock Band. No release date has been given thus far, but the presser specifies that its coming to the Wii, PS3 and 360.

One man's trash is another man's treasure.
I don't understand the amount of Green Day haters on Joystiq. Sure, they're not as good or as well-known as the Beatles, but that doesn't mean that they don't deserve a game.
The fact of the matter is that they have been around for 21 years and they have made many great albums in that time.
Don't you see what Harmonix is doing?
The Beatles: Rock Band is for older people that grew up with the Beatles and still love them today.
Green Day: Rock Band is for the 13-20somethings year olds (myself included) that grew up with albums like Dookie that changed modern music. Personally, Green Day is my favorite band and I am very excited about this.
Lego: Rock Band is for the younger kids that want to play music games, but don't want to play stuff like Judas Priest and Abnormality in RB2.
This is my favorite announcement of 2009 and I am anxiously awaiting the release.

This isn't going the way Activision went, this game's characters actually looks pretty sharp. Hopefully others will see the good job that Harmonix has done with the Beatles and Green Day. Then maybe we'll see bands like Led Zep and Pink Floyd.

Think of it this way, because they're getting their own game, there's less chance of them being in Rock Band 3 and people picking fucking VISIONS EVERYTIME I CHOOSE TO PLAY WITH SOMEONE ONLINE, GODDAMN IT!!

I've got nothing against Green Day, I'm not a big fan either though.
But I don't understand why they would go to Green Day for a game.
When bands like Pink Floyd and U2 are willing to have a music game for themselves, and they are arguably much bigger. Just seems like a strange choice in the end. Especially when the bloody Beatles could barely sell a game, Green Day will fare much worse.

@Brysonial the Bison(and all the other people saying the same kinda thing):
From what we've seen, this doesn't look like it will be going the way of Activision/Neversoft for several reasons. As mentioned above the character models look much better in this, we can also see from The Beatles: Rock Band that Harmonix puts a lot of effort into making it more suited towards the specific band; the difference here is that Green Day aren't as different to the normal themes of Rock Band as The Beatles were. We also see that when they make a band specific game they *shock* actually have the on disc songs only from that band and quite a few of the bands songs, I would think because of the looser licensing Green Day would have that there will probably be more songs than there was on The Beatles: Rock Band. In contrast to this, GH: Metallica only has 28 Metallica songs and 21 other songs, which really, is pathetic. (That's only 57% songs by the band who's name is on the disc and cover!)

How does such a shitty band get the same respect as one of the best bands of all time? It's very confusing. I would have rather heard of a "The Rolling Stones: Rock Band" or something else that's good!

I'm old enough to actually know Green Day is not big enough for this and young enough to have appreciated their coming out & what they are today and I believe to know enough that I could not ever agree to Green Day being garbage or deservi ng of such a task.
Seriously people, no offense, but they are not of Led Zeppellin, Pink Floyd, The Smashing Pumpkins or of U2 status for arguments sake.
Again, I fear that adding GD to the standalone genre of Rock Band will hurt chances of seeing those bigger, arguably better and musically historical bands from getting their much more deserving just dues considering The Beatles' Rock Band hasn't sold like gangbusters and it's the FUCKING Beatles for crying out loud. People of all walks of life know them, heard of them and at one time loved them or had one of their songs play at some point in their existence. They are the kings of modern day popular rock, so seeing GD:RB, which I truly believe will barely move big numbers will kill the chances of seeing the more historical bands from getting their own freaking games. Nirvana, Pearl Jam or Soundgarden are more deserving than Green Day of this honor and they shouldn't either. All they should get as well are song pack releases.
Green Day deserves pack releases at best & not a stand alone game, not now at least, sorry. Sorry GD fans but be serious.

@cafecito, Little Coffee, funny name choice by the way, I don't know how old you are but you can't ignore that The Smashing Pumpkins exceeded Nirvana for top alternative band especially once Kurt died and after the dust settled and ripped or flannel gear was put away.
Look, I wouldn't have believed it back then but they managed it & became my, at the time for sure without a doubt, favorite modern day band. Granted I hated anything that was metal or scream rock from them but they did manage to have tons of hits/single worthy songs.
Plus any band that can manage a concept album gets high praise from me and I believe rock lovers.

There are many bands with far more consistently great songs in their back catalogue than Green Day. All arguably far more influential, too.
That they don't have their own multi-million dollar video game in production shows you just how punk Billie Joe and his chums are.

Putting aside the fact that Green Day were better in the past than they are now, their songs were among the first I ever learned on the guitar because they were easy power chord based riffs that one could learn in about a half hour. I also cannot deny the fun of playing their music on RB. But they are a band that I doubt has the catalog to support their own game. Aerosmith barely did, and that game was executed poorly. GH Metallica was a step up, and Beatles RB was a step beyond that. I just hate to see any innovation or advancement go to a Green Day iteration. There are more relevant bands that deserve it more than they do. Couldnt they just do a track pack a'la AC/DC and call it a day? That said, this will sell, and sadly it may outsell the previous band-based titles. And those bands are much better. *tear*

that makes a whole lot more sense than releasing it as DLC which is basically what it could be. If they're going to keep releasing artist specific games, they should at least be a bit cheaper. I meant come on, its the same game, just different songs, but all one band.

they have been around for 20-25 years. and unlike most big rock bands, they have pretty much been steadily producing stuff over that time, and not falling apart/getting back together when they need money.

exactly. i hate how when something becomes popular by a group that most of society dislikes, suddenly your expected to no longer like it, otherwise your not "cool".
who gives a shit, its a good band. sure warning wasn't great, but american idiot was alright. i still like kerplunk/dookie the most. but unlike a lot of bands, when they changed their style around nimrod, things didnt get horrible. and they managed to start making some pretty good albums again, even if it was after a few shaky ones.
its like marilyn manson, he put out some good music, got popular by goths, everyone shunned them, they eventually got unpopular, and now i know jocks that listen to some of the newest stuff, and i wouldnt say its any better than when people were shunning it for being "goth"

i dont really think they have ever put out anything "horrible" but of the albums ive listened to (which i dont think is all of them) warning was one of my least favorite. i think its just that i couldnt get into most of the songs. i like downtown/minority... cant remember any others off the top of my head.
to each their own though.

you cannot deny their early stuff is awesome. It is just their last 2 albums that have been kinda crap mostly their last one. I will most likely treat this as merely an expansion pack as I did for ACDC and Lego Back Band. This just makes my Rock Band 2 even more awesome.

I hated them before they were popular.
Don't project your feelings, or your justification on why so many people hate a band that you like, on everyone else.

i was really hoping that Rock band would stay away from these themed editions.
i'd also pick up one of the games if they came with more songs, however thats not really their fault. they have to please the record studios :(
anyway, i like greenday. mostly dookie though, not so much the newer stuff (havent listened to 21st century yet)

it makes plenty sense, it's your problem if you didn't understand it. the commenter was making fun of green day for putting on make-up and acting like children, as if they're doing the wrong thing with their lives. but they get paid, they probably get laid (or if they have families they support them pretty well), and i'm sure they have plenty of fun doing it.
yeah, they have a better job than me, but i'm not the one putting down what they do, whereas whippy is.
make sense now? or is that still too hard for you to understand?
