The demo for Dante's Inferno was very enjoyable. I won't bring up the big elephant in the room, as that fatass has been allowed in far too many times, so I'll just say that Dante's Inferno is a very solid and fun game all around.

I just ordered the Divine Edition for PS3, which looks awesome to me. Heck, they're giving me free upcoming DLC, tons of other freebies, and a Dante figurine, all for free.

I can't wait to play and I hope they get to do a sequel.

You have horrible taste in games. Dante's Inferno was not fun. It was a painful God of War clone. They didn't even put any friggen effort into it. Dante's Inferno has nothing original in it, and is a horrible excuse for a game. You should be ashamed for condoning what EA has done.

I agree. The "elephant in the room" was just theoretical before the demo dropped. Now the demo has confirmed that this game is a SHAMELESS rip-off. Honestly, the only thing that makes this game even slightly different from GoW is the whole good or evil thing, which they ripped off of inFamous.

Great job, EA.

Chill Out, Hyperion. People were going on the exact same rant when Dead Space came about. "It's just Resident Evil! Necromorphs? Please. At least try to disguise your zombies!"

And then it came out and rocked. Let's with-hold our judgement for a bit; maybe, just maybe, Dante might have something to add to the 3rd person hack-em-up.

Literally every complaint against Dante's Inferno is "ITS JUST LIKE GOD OF WAR" or "OH GOD THEYRE RAPING THE POEM I'VE NEVER READ". Get over it. Gears of War ripped off Kill.Switch and every game with a cover system ripped off Winback. I bet the same people who are screaming about Dante's Inferno have no problem with Gears. Lots of games are very derivitive, it doesn't keep them from being fun.

On the subject of its faithfulness (or lack thereof) to the source material, why does it matter? It doesn't burn all copies of The Divine Comedy in existence. It doesn't affect your enjoyment (if you actually read it, which I highly doubt anyone here has done) of it. In the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger screaming at a chid, "STOP WHINING!"

That being said, I enjoyed the demo and thought its gameplay was superior to GoW3's. I think at this point God of War is relying on spectacle that really isn't even that impressive anymore. Ripping the guts out of the Centaur was pretty cool but other than that the rest of the demo was pretty mediocre. It was the same greek city/caves that were in GOW1 and 2. Dante's Inferno presents some more interesting environments to do battle in, and the Holy/Unholy mechanic is novel.

I do hate the placement/look of the buttons in the QTEs compared to GOW3, though. It has the right idea, make the sides of the screen flash so you know what to press without having to take your eyes off the carnage.

Unless there's something super crazy unique and special hidden away inside the main game, I seriously doubt this game will have anything to offer. Even the upgradable combos looked similar. At first I was considering renting this game but after playing the demo I will not even be doing that.

I don't think it's super unique or creative, but it's fun. That's definitely more than I can say for a lot of games.

Plus to be honest it really reminded me of Devil May Cry more than God of War at times.

the thing is, that's ONE gameplay element. with inferno, it's THE ENTIRE GAME. that's why everyone is complaining.

It's one thing to be similar to another game, or borrow certain aspects. It's another thing to be THE EXACT SAME GAME with a different skin. Most games will at least try to improve on what they're borrowing from. These guys didn't even bother.

It's... Not the exact same game, though. Just because it's an action game with similar controls doesn't make it a re-skin. The Great Giana Sisters is a ripoff. Rataoing and The Little Cars are ripoffs.

It's not an action game with similar controls. It's an action game with THE SAME controls. All the way down to defeating a giant monster, then mounting it, and using it to swat at the other enemies.

The fountains that restore your health and mana are EXACTLY like the chests in GoW.
The QTEs look EXACTLY like in GoW.
Matter of fact, didn't Kratos have to fight through hell at some point trying to save his wife? Was that even IN The Divine Comedy.

lol...this game has more similarities to GoW than it does to the literary work it's supposed to be based upon.

I gotta agree with Filthy. The controls are similar but it's a third person hack n slash, how much could they really change up the controls? Halo and COD and every other FPS have near identicle controls, are they all clones of each other? I think the cross/scythe dynamic really changes the combat up. There hasn't been a real change of combat since GoW 1 all the way up to the GoW 3 demo, so the changes in Dante's Inferno, however slight, are refreshing to me. The set pieces in GoW are awesome, but they're starting to get old, and I havne't seen anything for GoW 3 that suggests them changing things up. Even if it was just a straight reskin I'd be glad to play an awesome hack-n-slash game in new environments and with new characters.

@Hyperunion
If it's a straight clone of GoW, and it's not fun, then I'd assume you don't think GoW is fun? Or is it just that something needs to be completely new and original to be worth playing to you?

Take it or leave it.

I'm sick of kids whining over trivial things. (Seriously, the guy who claimed the good evil alignment came from infamous is fucking retarded.)

Anyway, I for one an not a fan of Greek mythology. The setting in Dante's Inferno appeals to me more, so considering that I have never had the opportunity to fully play though a game of God of War despite the fact it is a great game; I'm glad the 360 is getting a "clone" for me to play in a more appealing setting.

Know what? I'm not saying the game won't be fun. The demo was fun...just like God of War was fun. But, where's the artistic integrity? Hell, all first-person shooters are basically the same. But each one tries to at least improve on the formula. Modern Warfare 2 has less similarities to the first Modern Warfare than this game does to GoW.

Rock Band took Guitar Hero and improved upon it. Gran Turismo and Forza are the same game, but each with certain elements that are unique to their games. Each tries to one-up the other. Each tries to set their product apart. Dante's Inferno doesn't do ANY of that. There's not a SINGLE SHRED of originality in this game. How many games can you say that about?

Sure, inFamous didn't invent the idea of having a good or evil alignment. But in DI, if you punish your enemies, you gain points to develop your character's powers in the unholy direction. If you absolve your enemies, you gain points to develop your character's powers in the holy direction.

No, that's not how the mechanic was implemented in inFamous at all.

No, of course I haven't played the entire game. But, I for one, was holding of judgment of this game until the demo dropped. I could see from screenshots and the little that was revealed about the game that it was very similar to GoW. That was fine with me. We all know games of the same genre are often very similar. And, sure there might be something else in the full game that sets Dante's Inferno apart from God of War. But, this demo was EA's chance to prove that this game isn't a carbon copy clone of GoW. Instead they shamelessly confirmed that it was.

I'm sorry. By the end of the demo, I was just pretty fucking disgusted. Again, it's one thing to take an idea and improve upon it or make it your own. But this game shows a complete lack of giving a shit.

Saying that I would invent a square wheel (implying that I value something being unique over it's function) is relevant. But, a Go-Bot/Transformers comparison (implying that you value a clone product with a complete lack of innovation) is not relevant.

Maaaaakes perfect sense.

Sorry if I struck a nerve, Thor. Go-Bots were cool too.

I'll leave it at this. I think game developers should always try to raise the bar in some way. Killzone 2 attempted to improve upon the fps genre. Modern Warfare 2 attempted to improve upon it further. That's how progress is made. It doesn't have to be a ground-breaking innovation. But, for my money, at least show that you put in SOME effort to up the ante. But that's just a PERSONAL requirement of any company that wants $60 of my hard-earned cash. Show some effort.

But, hey, we've all got different standards. Some will say, "Hey, make it just as good as the other one, and I'll be happy...cuz I liked the other one." And that's fine. If you like it, I LOVE it.

As far as the Go-Bot/Transformer analogy, the point wasn't that one was better than the other. As you said, that's a complete matter of opinion. The point was that one was a complete clone of the other, with no effort to better it or set it apart.

And, no, Drew, Go-Bots did not come out before Transformers. Although Go-Bots were rushed to the American market in an attempt to beat the release of Transformers, Transformers were introduced in Japan (under the name Diaclone) in 1980. Go-Bots came out in Japan (as Machine Robo) in 1982.

Wikipedia FTW! :)

Troy, your gobots comment made me laugh out loud. +1 for you just for that.

As for the Dante's Inferno thing, I'm siding with you. I played GoW 1&2 recently (the HD ones) and then played DI. I could not believe how alike they were. Right down to the combo system. The only variance I can see is the cross and the good/evil thing but even the encounters were the same (riding the beast you just defeated, kill all the baddies in the hallway to open the door at the end before the big spiked thingy rolls you over). The preview at the end of the game shows Dante crossing some kind of rope just like Kratos does. Even the button mappings are the same.

I think the only thing that they can do now to appease GoW fans is to give some DLC that changes your character into Kratos. ;)

Props to the team for the nice backgrounds though and for the fluid action though the speed at which you evade is a bit too fast. Reminds me of the Flash or something.

...except that the date on my original Megatron says Japan 1975.

and i love GoW, and having played the demo for both games, i'm actually looking forward more to DI than GoW III. I sorta like the Holy/Unholy part that was or wasnt stolen from InFamous or whatever game it was that it was supposedly taken from. GoW didn't have that affect, and by that fact alone it is not an identical clone as others have stated. Yes, Kratos traveled through hell, for a level. not as a game. whip-t-do.

buy both, buy none. no one is forcing anyone's hands.

Just to chime in again, despite the fact that they blatantly ripped off GoW, what they did still looks and plays nice. I'm probably more affected by it because I just finished playing GoW1 and 2 (plus the GoW3 demo) over the past 2 weeks and then I jump into this. It just seemed like the same thing and it turned me off.

For those who have never experienced GoW, this game will be a lot of fun.

Actually, they should just use a different mythology. If Dante's Inferno is Divine Comedy themed-gow, then the second one shouldn't be dante at all. It should be something similar, but based on Egyptian Mythology. That could make for both awesome set-pieces and awesome boss battles.

Agreed. I was on the fence about this game anyway, and the demo definitely put me off the whole enterprise. I found myself snickering at the very weak 2D animation sequence, which I'm sure was not the intended reaction. The cut-scenes were lavish, but the character design and in-game graphics did not inspire me. And the music... gah. They lay it on pretty thick with the lung-bursting chanting in the soundtrack.

Fortunately, there are a ton of sure-hit games rolling around in 2010, so I don't think I'll miss it too much if I skip this one.
