My thoughts exactly. As I've said before, I hope this brings on a revolution in the adventure genre, so that this style of gameplay become's our 'point-and-click' of the modern era.

Yes, yes, and more yes. I watch a lot of movies, and read a lot of books, and play a lot of video games. I've been waiting for a game to wow me with drama and intrigue. i think this game will do for drama, what Uncharted did for action.
CANT WAIT!

There's going to be too many simpletons who just don't "get" the purpose of this game, I fear the sales will be pitiful (even lower than most of us expect). It's my #3 game next year so I'm definitely going to get it...whenever Sony decides to announce a date.

Oh yeah, it's gonna bomb hard. There's no real doubt about that.

Hopefully it'll end up being one of those 'amazing games no one played', as opposed to one of those 'bad games no one bought for a good reason', though. (So far, it's looking like it will be, thankfully.)

its not an shooter nor a sports title so I already didn't expect it to do THAT well anyways, but I'm sure Sony looks at it as a title that will have ok lifetime sales numbers.....my guess is it will do 250-500k globally the first month and go on to sell 1 million over the next 5 years....

Just to clarify: inaction is simply a choice, but not a requirement in the game. You can choose to always do something. What I was praising is the game's acknowledgment of inaction -- something you so rarely see in gaming.

Of course, I did say that if you've passed off Heavy Rain as not your thing, there's very little that can be done to convince you otherwise. It plays, perhaps unsurprisingly, like it looks. Not every game is for everyone, and it's the honest thing to write: chances are, many people won't like it.

The point of the game is to immerse yourself into the story and to make decisions which radically affect the story. Sure, it goes against the standard game which is simply to perform actions and get better and performing said actions, but that isn't an objectively bad thing. It's just as pretentious to dismiss it because it doesn't follow the general route of relying on gameplay as it is for people to look down on people who don't appreciate the story aspects of games. I, for one, am looking forward to it because story is probably the most important part of a game, for me, but I don't fault people for not appreciating the same aspects of a game, but it would be nice if people didn't attack the game for being almost solely story oriented, because it is equally as conceited to do so.

To expand what I said. I get it, the game is essentially an interactive choose your own adventure book. Death is permanent, and all the dialog choices you make can lead towards many many endings of the game. This is all well and good, but it doesn't look very fun, plus from all the previews I have seen the voice acting is less than stellar.

I am not saying this will be a bad game, but to suggest someone is a "simpleton" because they didn't buy it, and assuming that someone didn't buy it because they don't "get it" is stupid. Not everyone is going to have the same tastes as you, you sound like one of those "high art" indie movie buffs, "IF YOU DON'T WATCH THESE SUPER OBSCURE MOVIES I LOVE YOU ARE CLEARLY NOT SMART ENOUGH TO GET THEM!". Statements like that are so very ignorant.

Huey makes me scared about gamers. I don't believe every game has to be "fun" and involve you running around the streets blasting everyone in the face with insane powers. If movie creators thought this way, all we would see is Hollywood Action films (which we do see a lot of). While those films are exciting and fun - sometimes it is much more rewarding engaging in a story and feeling different emotions that aren't commonly tied to games.

IF the story is well done and rewarding - then why not want to experience it? Just because you cannot jump out of a window with Akimbo Shotguns screaming, "DIE NOOBFUCK!" and shooting some 10 year old (playing as a terrorist) in the face; doesn't mean it is NOT worth playing...

@DarkNessBear

I love it how based on maybe two posts in this thread you have suddenly jumped to conclusions on what kinds of video games I play. You really have no idea what my taste in games is and I am really insulted that you are basically suggesting that just because I think Heavy Rain looks boring that I am a 13 year old Counter Strike addict.

Do you know what my favourite game of 2009 is? Dragon Age, followed closely by Arkham Asylum. I love RPG's, I enjoy a well written story in a game. I just think a game can't ONLY rely on the story and completely ignore other aspects of game design that I find fun. I find combat fun, I enjoy a well written story, I like all sorts of different games, I just don't find the concept of Heavy Rain to be terribly exciting. Sorry to disappoint you.

How was Tmac trolling? He's stating a fact: The majority of gamers are unrefined slobs, and don't play games like this.

Goes back to the whole "Forza is for fratboys, GT is for caviar-eating snobs" argument.

Also DarkNessBear even if I WAS a 13 year old Counter Strike addict who are you to judge what my taste in games is? Just because CS/COD/(insert random FPS) Isn't your cup of tea doesn't mean the game is bad. This is exactly why I tmac's comment at the beginning to be extremely ignorant in the first place. You are free to like whatever games you want, everyone is, just because you think one game is better than the other doesn't mean it is or is not, it's just what YOU like.

People can play whatever the hell games they want, and anyone who looks down on anyone else for playing or not playing certain games is extremely ignorant. I never said Heavy Rain would be a bad game, I just said it looks boring to me.

Huey,

The only thing I find more ignorant than people assuming you're some kind of FPS junkie, is that you thought you could come into a post about a preview of a game, state it's boring, and not expect anyone to challenge you on that.

I just hope it's all like the first half or so of Indigo Prophecy. Before it goes batshit, that's one of the best games last gen.

Also I didn't actually read the article because I think the fun of the game will be encountering things for the first time and having to react then.

I couldn't agree more. I find it a bit atrocious that they would take this long, and go to such great lengths, to try to engage you in the story, create a realistic atmosphere, and emotionally tie you to the characters. Yet they fall short of having a decent voice actor regardless of the fact that most of the player's emotional engagement will be as a result of the actor's voice.

I was looking forward to this game, but if the voice acting is a failure, then this game will be a failure.

I was completely captivated through Andrew's preview until the last paragraph about the voice acting.

For what they are trying to accomplish, this game doesn't need tight controls, intense action sequences, 20 hours of gameplay, or killstreak nukes, but it needs good facial animations, and it needs solid voice acting.

I will definitely play this with subtitles if one of the other language soundtracks avoids stiff dialogue.

I definitely agree about turning on the subtitles. I don't mind reading them and if it separates me from poor voice acting, even better. It might even bring it closer to that novel-like feeling I get from this game.

You seem like one of those super heroes who probably just couldn't cope with all these mega-corporations ruining the earth, probably had a bit too much to drink, hit the misses, screwed a few less than desirable women.

I guess all this "going green" stuff gave you the boost you needed.

You should've seen what happened at a Sony press conference a couple months back. It was the father's scene, and the polygons suddenly decided that they didn't want to be held down. So fucking textures everywhere, zapping all over the screen, vertexes have no defined point, it was crazy.

I'm serious, me & a mate watched it for about 5 minutes. it was a scene with the big built detective outside a warehouse, he was questioning a guy, while they were out in the rain. it was tearing up for most that time, it was several tears at once. It was painful to watch, as it was one of the games I wanted to see while I was there

This kind of game needs to have solid voice acting to become truely engrossing, it's hard to really get into a good game with actors that sound like they are reading directly from script.

The minorities have a lock on sports games, the fat people are all in L4D 1 and 2, and the ugly people are all playing WoW.

So, that pretty much sums it up. Only people that were left for a new game were olive-skinned, boring white people, who will regale you with tales about delicious homemade bread and self-canned jams.

one of my top 5 most wanted games of next year, coming in right behind Resistance 3, I'm not worried at all about gameplay because I know what it is and what its suppose to be, if anyone goes into thinking its something other than what it is then they will be the ones setting themselves up for failure.
