In the most recent edition of Iwata Asks, Nintendo prez Satoru Iwata gathers up Takashi Tezuka and Toshihiko Nakago for a thorough discussion of their time with the company, the many projects they've worked on and their 25-year-long partnership with Shigeru Miyamoto. Let's break it down: Takashi Tezuka and Toshihiko Nakago both started at Nintendo around 1984, helping to shape everything from Balloon Fight to Super Mario Bros. These guys were part of the team that developed Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda -- at the same time.
During the 10-page chat, a plethora of interesting tidbits are revealed about some of the game industry's most influential Nintendo titles. Did you know that Zelda was initially designed as a dungeon game without an overworld? Or, how about the revelation that World 1-1 was created last, after the rest of the levels in Super Mario Bros., and designed implicitly to teach the game to non-gamers? The chat even gets into the lurid sleeping arrangements of Miyamota-san and Nakago-san while on business trips for ExciteBike (spoiler: it's not that lurid).

Just guessing, but perhaps he means since the release of the Wii.
Either way, I have no opinion on the matter.

Ouch... I'm in agreement with Traceur here. I really want to see Miyamoto flex his creative muscle again. Nintendogs was a fun little toy, and the Wii-series is a nifty experiment, but it's been almost 10 years since Pikmin was unveiled (Pikmin is amazing btw, hurry up with the third game). Mario Galaxy gameplay/concept was brilliant, so I know he hasn't lost it in his senior position. I don't want to say he's wasting his talent, but I don't want to see him exploit it either...
I honestly want to see what Miyamoto would do if given the opportunity to just create a game with a few core team members in eight months. I want to see if he can recreate the magic of Donkey Kong, and I hope that he can.

I almost don't know if he has the desire anymore. Look at it from his position. Nintendo cranked out massive amounts of content for the GameCube that failed to catch on. Now, they churn out mostly shovelware and uninspired titles, and people buy it by the truckload. That's got to be disheartening, especially to someone like him.

i agree with traceur, assuming he means since the release of the wii. miyamoto has been going down hill, and we all know he's MUCH better than that. when he unveils a new IP, i'll be one of the first excited ones, and if it turns out to be stupid and gimmicky, then i'll just shake my head in disappointment. if it turns out FANTASTIC, whatever faith i've lost in nintendo these past few years will be restored.

Of course I mean since the release of the Wii. A new Mario or Zelda is nice and all, but I really wanna see something new. 'Cause let's face it, New Super Mario Bros Wii is nothing but a 20 year old game with 4 player co-op.
Hell, Super Mario World is better than NSMBW, and I'm not saying that comparatively to the times. I mean it's better NOW. Not that it's bad, just not anything new.

I agree with him too. Face it, Miyamoto's a hack now...it happens with everyone who stays around in their profession too long. What's that batman saying, you either die a legend or live long enough to go crazy and make shitty games like Wii Sports and Wii Music...or something like that.

You're comments about Miyamoto are just plain rude and ignorant.
I'm sorry, you want creative shit from Miyamoto? Super Mario and Zelda are iconic BECAUSE of his creativity. That's not good enough? Well tough shit for not being old enough to actually enjoy gaming in 1984 - TOUGH SHIT.
If a man does ONE thing in his life that makes millions... MILLIONS of people recognize him, he's done something.
You fucking commenters are lucky if you can do one thing in your lifetime to make all your friends remember you, let alone millions.
Man reading these chapped my ass. Take Miley Cirus and Cliffy B. and shove them up your collective asses. Miyamoto was also a driving force behind most Nintendo hardware devices, franchises and hits.
You realize how many games have been created because of his industry influence?
He's still creating great games today, just not at internet speeds. Learn patience ingrates.
End of Rant...

Metallica's put out pretty much nothing but shit for at least 10 years, but it's ok to talk shit about them and make fun of them even though they are basically the Miyamoto of metal. I don't see why Miyamoto himself should be shielded from criticizm

Except not everyone's coo with people makin' fun of them either.
Like I.
It's okay to respect a man after they're dead, but apparently when they're alive everyone has a right to trash their name just because they didn't make anything breathtaking lately.

@ Brad [insert long retarded name here like all the other "cool kids" on Joystiq blogs]...
Pikmin was created because he liked gardening. Zelda was created because he liked adventuring.
Miyamoto is becoming an old man now. He has different influences in his life now than when he was younger. We don't know how many concepts he's created that have failed throughout his career but I'm pretty sure I've read before, "A lot". You don't succeed unless you fail because no one, NO ONE hits a home run 100% of the time.
As far as I'm concerned, Super Mario Galaxy "wow'd" me just as much as Mario 64. I felt it was the true successor to Mario 64 and it was very innovative in gameplay.
Everyone needs to realize that it's been OVER 20 years since the Famicom and that all his "greatness" isn't because of what he did in one particular year, it's what he's done throughout his career. Despite Zelda being a hit in '87, Miyamoto was not iconic, he was a rising star. Well, he's a star now and it's well deserved... even if he never makes another video game.
Now it's time for someone else to step up to the plate (and there are some potentials). That's the circle of life. Give Miyamoto the respect he's EARNED.

@Darth: You seriously think Miyamoto agrees with teh intarwebz that Nintendo is 'churning out uninspired software by the truckload' and is 'disheartened'? Yeah, except - no.
I'm sure there are some Nintendo employees who are disappointed with Wii Fit etc (and they will obviously not say so, or else be very positive about it, in public or in public interviews like this) but somebody with that much of a senior position and that much respect is in a position to change it - and in fact he held roles, sometimes significant roles, in creating the software that internet fanboys whine about.
If Miyamoto did ever get seriously 'disheartened' I am not suggesting he would say that in public either - but he can walk out of there next second. He can retire, set up his own company, go work for Sega, whatever. Because he hasn't - yes he really is genuinely excited about the prospect of getting non-gamers to stand on bathroom scales while pretending to spin a hula-hoop, in front of a Nintendo console.
In other words the guy who invented Mario, Zelda, and most of modern gaming really does think Wii Fit (and Wii Music and whatever) is a great thing for the industry/pastime and there's no getting round that. You might not agree with him, but as far as his opinion is concerned, you'd better deal with it.
And by the way, re the comparison to GC era, what major, successful fan-favourite content did they develop on GameCube that hasn't already had a version on Wii? Pikmin, yeah (except the remakes) but that's announced; F-Zero GX wasn't Nintendo-developed but let's count it anyway; other than that? There are third-party GC titles which I would definitely very much like to see sequels on Wii but don't have them (RE4, Eternal Darkness) but off-hand I can't think of any Nintendo ones; and obviously Nintendo has put out lots of new franchises on Wii that weren't on GC, too. Of course, maybe that's just because I didn't have any interest in whatever first-party titles you particularly liked on GC.

My god! Developing Super Mario Bros and the Legend of Zelda at the same time is like one team developing Uncharted 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 at the same time, by today's standards. It just shows how talented developers were back in those days. No wonder these franchises are still flying high these days.

It is still done, in some cases. SM64 and OoT were initially set for similar releases. Insomniac is working on Resistance 3, and just finished R&C, and Bungie developed ODST at the same time as Reach, although on different engines. But it's rare.

Especially considering they had practically no tools, and designed levels on huge sheets of graph paper, and had progammers hardcode everything into the game.

Except that COD:MW2 was nothing more than an expansion of COD4 which was an expansion of COD2 and Uncharted 2 is a mishmash of every game we've played this generation while the two games Miyamoto developed at the same time where unique and layed the foundation for gaming for the next 2-3 decades.

It's not that hard. He said that the Modern Warfare series is an expansion to Call of Duty 2, that Uncharted 2 is a combination of all gametypes, and that Shiggy's titles were cornerstones of the industry.

development houses/teams. Nintendo EAD3 had been simultaneously developing Spirit Tracks and Zelda Wii, but those are two separate teams. I would imagine Bungie, Naughty Dog, Insomniac, and pretty much everyone else still has multiple teams.
There would be some overlap at the top, of course, but the teams are somewhat distinct.
