It seems Sony is attempting to drum up interest in Team Ico's upcoming, Griffin-infused adventure, The Last Guardian, by showcasing its earlier opus to poor, unenlightened folks who missed it the first time around. The opus in question is Shadow of the Colossus, which, according to a Team ICO fan site, has been listed by a number of Japanese retailers to be reprinted and sold on February 4. Sadly, it didn't get the God of War Collection treatment -- the game's still on its original platform, the PlayStation 2.
If you were the speculatin' type, you might think that The Last Guardian would be released not too much later than this reprint, ensuring that the warm, Team ICO-esque feeling would still be fresh in everyone's minds. We're more the wait-and-see types, so we plan on waiting and, shortly after that, seeing.

Eh, not like you need dialog to get this game. It's done so beautifully that I can honestly say without subtitles you will get the story without any confusion.
I'm just confused. They're gonna get people excited for Ico 3 on the PS3, by releasing Ico 2 that doesn't work on a retail PS3 for the past 2 years? Strange tactic IMO. Give it the God of War Collection treatment!

It just seems a lot easier to buy the english version... since you know, its still being sold in most major retailers for $19.99. Theres no reason to re-issue something that is still being made.

I never got to either. I received the demo and loved it but was moving on to next gen and it got lost in the shuffle. I am so ashamed of myself for not playing this. I wish it would come over to the 360. Maybe 2010 is the year i get a PS3 finally.

@Rhamsey: Yes, you should. Even if you have to use guides, so be it - you MUST see the end of that game.
Ico is by far the rarer of the two: I've found multiple copies of Shadow of the Colossus in Gamestop used bins, but had to resort to Craigslist for Ico (and for 60 bucks, I might add!).
A damn shame they're not doing anything with their two-game catalog a la GoW. A damn shame.

Ico can be found at Gamestop if you know how to work their online site. You can't get to the Ico product page by searching from Gamestop.com, but you can get there by searching for "Ico Gamestop" (or the other way around) on google. From there you just enter in your zip code and hope for the best. When I went searching for a second copy a year or so ago I found one at a local gamestop for about 20 dollars. That's about a third of what you might pay on Ebay.

Thanks for the tip, BananaBoat. I usually use Amazon for shopping for used games, but I'll have to try that as I've always wanted to play Ico.

I think we should start a petition for a reprinting/port of Ico. Anybody in?

I doubt it will happen, even though I think there is money to be made there. If they reprinted it with the European/Japanese box artwork (which is breathtaking, for those of you that have never seen it) and gave it decent marketing, it could easily top the sales from the original American run. If they released it on the PSN (it's a crime that neither SOTC or Ico are available in this manner), they could cut out the cost of producing new boxes and discs entirely, and basically reap pure profit.
Obviously my hope is on a remastered box set though.

Well, at this point I think they're pretty much done with the PS2, sadly. Remastered box set is what I'm hoping for too, but I think a PSN port would I think Ico/SotC are the kind of games that should launch the service (if it's really coming). As you pointed out there's the fact they'll earn more by not having to package the game and send it to retail. Lastly, there's the fact that it'll probably much cheaper to produce than a normal PSN game because the majority of the work has been done for more than five years.

It would be awesome if they did a double pack (like the GoW collection) which included both ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. I never played ICO, but bought, played and loved Shadow of the Colossus.
Giving both of them the HD treatment (for it's time, SotC was pretty far ahead, anyway) would be awesome.

If it only took about a couple of months to give GoW1&2 the HD treatment I can't see a reason why Sony wouldn't do the same in this case. There is easy $$$ to be made.

HD upgraded, constant framerate, anti-aliasing... TROPHIES! just like with GoW. we all want it, why won't they give it to us? i'd buy 2 or 3, just to support it, then give the extra copies to friends. hell, if they want it, i'll send 'em the money in advance, just MAKE IT HAPPEN!

An upgrade would have been nice, but still an amazing game. If you've never played it, pick this game up.

They need to do a re-release in the US, specifically ICO. The biggest hindrance to new fans playing ICO today is just that you can't find copies anymore. A reprinting release of it would surely help people enjoy Team ICO's first(and in my opinion, best) game thus far. :)

You'd think they'd give it the GOW treatment. I've seen Ico at my local shop, but they still want 50 for it. Haven't seen SotC.

I love this game, but can we get a re-release of Ico? I never got a chance to play that game.
I wish we could get a HD double-pack with both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.

What a missed opportunity. If they were smart. They'd release the Team ICO collection on PS3. ICO & Shadow of Colossus remastered in HD. The disc would also include a behind the scenes look, not only at ICO & Shadow of Colossus, but at Last Guardian as well. This would fly off shelves, but instead we're getting this lame reprint on a dead console.

@TheCodex:
I think it could do ok. Just put it out for $40 and make sure the packaging is very clear that it is two games. All the moms out there will think it's a huge deal compared to the $60 games and pick it up for their kids.

Ico's sales were almost non-existent in the United States due to horrible box art, zero marketing, and a variety of different factors. Shadow of the Colossus sold much better here, but it still doesn't come close to the sales of various other Sony franchises. I hope that Sony decides that the Japanese and European sales of a potential remaster would make it worth their time and resources.
Actually, I hope that they wait on the project until The Last Guardian comes out so that Team Ico can devote their full attention to not only remastering both games, but also making sure the FPS is rock steady on SOTC, and possibly finishing off the upper levels of the Shrine of Worship.
I need new pants now.
