With plenty of actual controversy surrounding Modern Warfare 2, the issues of colorblind gamers seem a relatively innocent (and common) oversight. An ongoing petition and Facebook group is requesting a patch for the game. According to the petition, those with a particular type of red/green color blindness "cannot tell friend from foe in the online matches, as their names appear in these colors, and the radar uses the colors too." Infinity Ward's community manager has acknowledged that he will bring up the concern to the team.
Our very own red/green color blind Ben Gilbert, who doesn't have a particular issue with MW2's spectrum decisions, noted, "I can think of about 20 other games that need a solution for this before MW2. How about every puzzle game ever made that depends on color matching -- I'm looking at you especially, Super Puzzle Fighter, you heart breaker."
Considering color blindness is relatively common, especially among males, it's surprising that it isn't tested for more regularly. Any QA folks who can give better insight into whether color blindness is tested for (and how) should feel free to drop a note in the comments.

Honestly this shouldn't even be a topic. There are monitors and televisions with colorblind settings.
The cost of mandating colorblind options (which is a possible solution) would either trickle down and be spread across the entirety of the consumer base OR eat into the profits of already struggling studios. While it would be great to be altruistic and include everyone, it isn't feasible and this would be the dumbest way of going about it. If a person is colorblind, he (or in very rare cases 'she') should invest in a more complete solution, such as a monitor that has color translation settings for the particular colorblindness they have.
Kudos to the companies that offer this feature anyhow. It is a great advertising tool and maybe there should be something they can put on their box if they include these kind of features.

i have never seen a colorblind monitor or television, and it probably still wouldn't help as everyones different. Some people can't see any color, others are blue/yellow deficient. most are red/green but even then some people can't see any red/green, and others, like myself, can only see pure red and green.
when i started MW2 online i was constantly getting killed because i couldn't tell who people were. Sometimes i'd run right out into someones killstreak because i couldn't tell the color. This isn't the only game i've had trouble with. GTA4 gives me a lot of trouble in free mode when were all different colors. a lot of the time i'll shoot at my friend who's green when i think he's brown. or i'll shoot at a blue person thinking he's purple.
And this would not cost a lot of money or time to fix what-so-ever. It's simply a change in the color highlighting in multiplayer. Blue is already used for people in a party showing that 2 different text highlights are possible. They should simply add a colorblind option that makes everyone some shade of blue.
Only hard work would be recoloring the killstreaks as those always show up as green. And even then, at 25x25 pixel images, not that hard. anyone who knows their way around photoshop could do it.
The whole thing is maybe a days work, if that.

Just use the infinite ammo glitch and shoot at anybody you see, teammates and enemies alike, without fear of running out of bullets. See: it's not a bug, it's a feature!

Hopefully, after the colorblind test there won't be exorcist (linda blair) that will appear on your screen or maybe a wacked mw2 ghost soldier! ahh, just enjoying the mw2 ammo bug for today, hopefully it will last: http://bit.ly/modern-warfare-another-cool-bug

@Crockett: Why is it so high in canada? I think the "standard" figure is about 1 in 10, although that might be for a specific type (like specifically red/green or something); can't remember where I saw it (probably wikipedia knowing me lol). I'm not colour blind myself, but MW2 (and every other game for that matter) should take the effort to accomodate the colour blind (as said, it really isn't that hard. All you need is a menu option to turn it on and maybe some tweaks to some graphics here and there). Actually, why do the consoles themselves not have a global colourblindness option? surelly if that were implimented, then all games could automatically use their respective cb settings (like you choose that you have red/green cb, and the game auto-switches to r/g mode).

Of course he's joking. Otherwise he wouldn't know that he's supposed to be seeing numbers. And the tiny numbers on the right could just be reference numbers.
No oprimea, you must be colorblind; otherwise you'd clearly see all the naked ladies.

I have a slight red/green colour deficiency, so a feature like this would be nice for me.

I can see all of them easily as well. Maybe you have a very slight case of colorblindness? Is that even a thing?

Well I just looked up a colorblind test online and for some of the pictures it said that colorblind people should see nothing and color normal should see a faint image. So I think seeing something faintly is fine so long as you see it at all.
Also, it says that certain monitors may cause more difficulty in seeing some of them so if you really want to know, you should go in to a vision center for a test.

sympathies, i can only see the upper left number.
settings for colour blindness wouldn't take a lot of QC, if any, there are only a limited number of colour blindnesses, and by far the most common is when reds/greens skew to an orangey hue. It would be so easy to have an option to change the colour of: crosshairs, enemies, friendlies in the options screen, and no QC would be needed. CoD does give me a little trouble, and i definitely can't play on hardcore, i just team kill everyone accidentally with my twitchy trigger finger =p

World at War had a colorblind option.
It also had an abbreviated option which wouldn't show clan tag or rank. I liked that one best.

I am colour blind and I have small issues with quite a few games. Without the colorblind mode on Peggle I simply would not be able to see the purple pegs at all. Some options for MW2 would be most welcome.

LOL I'm the same way, and I didn't even know there was a color blind mode until a while after I had it on XBLA (I actually only found the mode when I got it on my iPhone. I'd often have to ask my wife where the purple peg was or spend a long time hunting for it.
MW2 doesn't really bother me, but the one FPS that gets me is Battlefield. The blue and red dots are really hard to discern, and unlike MW2, it has friendly fire. After playing for a few days, I get used to it, but it takes a while.

As someone who is mildly red-green colorblind, I agree with the petition. I have been killed over my friend/foe delay. it's only 1/4 second or so, but that is still to long. And yes, I turn on colorblind mode for all games that have it. Thank you Peggle!
and for another test, look at this picture:

however long it took you to notice, is how long you've been getting shot at.

It's not so much that I don't see red or green, but that the are harder to differentiate. For example that picture, if it's supposed to be red, but it's green, or visa versa, I might not notice. But show me a card and say "What color is this?" I'll get it right 99.99% of the time. It also is tricky finding a red ball in a field of green ones, so that is why it's useful in Peggle. And one again there is the time delay, as it take me a bit longer that normal to tell you wether it's red or green, and in an FPS that matters a lot.

There also needs to be an option so Stevie Wonder can enjoy the game.
But seriously, it would be nice for all game developers to have color blind/left-handed/hearing impaired gamers in mind when they are designing the game. The only game with a color blind option I can think of is Peggle.

A lot of games have subtitles for all the spoken dialogue, doesn't that count as helping the hearing impaired?
