Sony Computer Entertainment America has laid off 30 full-time members of the company's Quality Assurance department. SCEA explained to Gamasutra that its San Francisco-based first-party QA group had been consolidated and moved to San Diego. The company would not comment on the 100 or so contract positions reportedly affected by the reorganization, as noted by Kotaku.
Sony is currently on the long road back to profitability -- expect some unfortunate bumps along the way.

If the department is doing the job well enough without the extra staff, then having more isn't neccessarily better, if anything its harming the company financially rather then benefiting quality. Surely they aren't silly enough to cut people in a department that assures the quality of thier products unless they feel that those that were cut were not particularly needed.

Yes, they are silly enough to do that. QA is viewed as an expense because they "don't produce anything". QA only exists because at some point something went really wrong and a red-faced manager ran around the building screaming, "You're all useless idiots," until somebody pacified him by saying, "I have an idea on how to keep this from happening." Given enough time of things running smoothly, managers always think, "We're not having any problems. Surely we don't need so much QA."
About two years of continuous cuts later something goes really wrong and the manager is running around the building screaming again.
Nobody appreciates QA until it's gone.

I believe trying to win this Christmas from MS will put a huge strain on Sony resources. The fact that Sony is still losing money on the PS3 Slim is huge. Then you have to factor in that Sony is also bundling games, HDTVs and Home Theater. Sony is facing very stiff competition from all their departments. For consumers, this is great because a little humble pie has Sony slashing prices on all of their products, but this has to hurt Sony as a business since the margins have to be very small or in the Red if you look at the PS3.
I truly wonder if Sony planned for the PS3 to kill all of the profits gained from the PS2 glory days. I am positive that Sony did not expect to be losing money on the PS3 slim. the Slim was suppose to put Sony in the Black, but instead they had to drop 100 bones in order to stay competitive.

I doubt the slim was put out for profitability purposes, but it does cut costs, and it makes sense that if you have the tech available (even if its still not quite making you the profit you want, but is at least cheaper to make) why not use it and sell it. IT will be a touch period for Sony, but don't forget, if it wasn't for the strong attempt to market Blu-ray which they are now making profit on, the PS3 would not only have been in a better position then it is today, but it would have started making profit ages ago.
So its not that they were 'trying' to loose money from PS2, but instead utilising that money to propel Blu-ray into every HD home possible, and what a perfect time to do so for UKdians, we are all having to switch to digital from analogue if we want to continue watching TV, its a requirement here, and many are taking the view that while they switch, why not go the full way, get a HD-TV and blu-ray.

Not likely, we won't be returning given that many of my coworkers found jobs elsewhere and all projects were sent to San Diego since we found out over 2 months ago that the higher ups wanted Foster City FPQA eliminated.
I'd give it more like 2 years. Regardless, it was more than 40 perm staff let go and over 100 contingent testers that almost all had the experience and ability to be perm staff. Many of our guys had over 5 or 10 years of experience just at Sony. Several have been in the industry for over 20 years!
We move on, and we stay strong. My daughter loves me more now for being home to play and read her books.

Wow Jmac, you're the new biggest asshole at Joystiq!
FYI, the reply button doesn't always work. People's comments get shoved in different sections whether they like it or not on this site. If you grew up and paid attention to things before commenting instead stopped making fun of people who have lost their jobs, then you'd have realized that.
