Agreed. I owned X6 for all about 10 minutes before I realized my mistake and haven't picked up one since.

Wouldn't mind a new 16-bit MMX game.

It was hard at first, and it is somewhat harder than the typical NES Mega Man games, but I think that is more due to the way games are developed these days.

NES games relied on learning patterns and trying sections over and over. Mega Man 9 went back to that.

Games today don't punish you nearly as much. Oh, you died? Good thing you walked past that Vita Chamber on your way to wrench-fucking that Big Daddy.

In any case, after playing through the levels a few times, I found Mega Man 9 to be fairly simple. It just takes time to learn the patterns and jumps.

Yeah that game was Demon's Souls, controller-throwing hard. Only in DS the enemies don't magically reappear if you move the screen half an inch in either direction.

Any 8-bit "hard" game from the 80s can be beaten in 20 minutes if you have save-states. It's all about doing everything in a row, and games back then were hard because they were primitive. If developers back then had the tools they have now, they'd kill to include in-game maps and spawn points.

welcome back to real gaming where it doesnt automatically save every 3 minutes for you. mm9 was not hard as soon as you played through the level once and knew what was going on. there are plenty of people who speed run quite quickly.

Yeah at first I was like "holy shit! how am I supposed to beat this!?" but then after a while that effect wore off and I beat it within like 3hrs. Also Capcom already let us know there will be an "easy mode" for those of us who couldn't handle Megaman 9 so don't sweat it pal.

The d-pad? It's utterly pathetic. I think, out of five controllers, only 1 d-pad actually works most of the time. It's irritating, since the Xbox d-pad wasn't too bad.

From joystiq like 3 days ago (sourcing Nintendo Power): "The new installment, like the brilliant Mega Man 9, uses an NES-style aesthetic, and features wacky new bosses like Sheep Man."

I wish some sidescrollers would patch in keyboard support. All three current gen. console have the ability to use them in some areas, so it shouldn't be too hard, right?

Not trying to make a fanboi comment, but isn't there a way to use a Dualshock 2 on a 360? Sony knows how to make a d-pad.

Now, how does a sheepman get the DNA of a sheep and the DNA of a man?

Anyway, I don't think they were just ignoring 2D gaming. There have been a few times where I've tried to navigate menus with d-pad and it just sucks all around.

Probably wasn't an oversight. It was probably an attempt to be cheap and use inferior parts. This is the company that tried to save 10 million by designing the GPU in house, remember?

The d-pad on the 360 controller is pretty useless for actual gameplay. I think Microsoft just expected everyone, including 2d platformers, to use the analog stick instead. The only real use for the d-pad is to switch weapons in your pew pew games. I think Nintendo has the best d-pads this generation, but then again, they should, with their huge focus on retro games.

Yep, that sounds like Microsoft. At this point I'm wondering why they don't just make a newly designed controller without the useless thing.

THEY'LL SAVE EVEN MORE MONEY!!!

I forgot about changing weapons in shooters. Even for a job that simple I think the d-pad could use more precision.

I actually like the PS3's d-pad better than the Wii's. Its just a little too small for me. Otherwise it'd probably win.

I don't mean to totally bitch about the 360, 'cause I like all three consoles almost equally, but your comment got me thinking about another thing bad about it.

Lack of third party controllers. I'm sure there is a third party PS3 controller with concave thumbsticks, but is there a 360 controller with a decent d-pad? Considering how cheap most can be found for I wouldn't mind buying one just for 2D games, but Microsoft doesn't allow them. :/

Boy, it's a good thing Dragon Age didn't use the KotOR interface. That thing relied on the d-pad heavily. It's one of the reasons I rebought an original Xbox to play it (that, and the Xbox emulators on the 360 are garbage).

@Eric

I have the streetfighter fightpad for the 360. I use it for all of my arcad-ey games. (I actually don't like fighting games) I think the d-pad works really well. It's a lot like the saturn d-pad. The only con is that it's a wired controller (Thanks MS) but it's really nice. It also has a switch on the back so you can adjust the d-pad to be controlling the d-pad, or left or right analog stick.

And despite the ability for one, I haven't seen a PS3 third party control with concave thumbsticks. Most are just a straight up clones of the dualshock, with button placement and shape being exactly the same. I really wish sony themselves would release a GOOD mimick of the 360 controller, since it's the controller I prefer. There are third party offerings, but they're all lackluster.

Inevitable, i suppose. Though if Famitsu's saying it, that means it lost it's Wii exclusivity in Japan, which is what the original had.

Oh well. More people to love the game.

Playing games on 360 that require a lot of dpad movement can sometimes be aggravating. I can't count how many times I died in Bionic Commando ReArmed because the dpad didn't do what I was trying to.

I wasn't exactly sure that there was one specifically with concave analog sticks. I just meant to point out that the PS3 has third party controllers, some of which can offer minor adjustments.

Also, thanks for pointing out fightpads. I forgot about them.

Yea, that's why I said there were third party offerings, but they're lackluster. Every review I can find of the rockfish says it sucks. It's made cheaply and it's inaccurate as well as laggy.
