It's been five years since Guerrilla released the original Killzone on PS2. Five years, one console generation, and seven PPEs later, Guerrilla crafted what remains one of the best looking games to date: Killzone 2. In its retrospective piece, Guerrilla compares how the tech and characters have changed in the five years spanning the two console games.
Perhaps most surprising about the comparison is not how improved the PS3 game is -- rather, we're impressed at how well the PS2 game has stood the test of time. Perhaps it's time to revisit the PS2 original, for those of you lucky enough to own a backwards-compatible PS3.

It's really amazing how the graphics just made this game for Guerilla! One of the best looking games on PS3, too bad for not a 10/10 campaign! If the single player would of been just a little more better this game would of got only 10's in the reviews!

I played KZ1 back in the days for just under a hour and what I remember was great detail and the way the HI-RES textures popped out in your face! Pretty laughable even back then! After the graphics loaded the game really looked very good for those days!

Don't. It was particularly good then and I'm sure it's even worse now.
Killzone 2 was pretty good though.

Good for you. K1 was a fantastic game and one to have in your PS2 collection. There was a lot of bashing of the game because it had built hype as the Halo killer. So, of course, nothing else mattered and the game was criticized for about just everything. Even the graphical glitches were over- exaggerated. They were no worse than most technical issues with games at that time. However because the art direction was gorgeous it more than made up for any glitches present.
Not only that but the single player campaign was great. The story and characters were interesting and the situations intense. I played it again recently and there was little shock to go back to 2004 graphics in that game. They were that good. Moreover I put it in my PS3 and logged into the servers. Early in the year there were still people available to play online.

You do realize that most games in the last generation had baked lighting, right? Even this generation still uses it as a way of saving processing.
And also do you realize that pop in (including textures) was one of the most common issue seven in high profile games such as the GTA series, right? The issues in K1 were not worse than the average game except K1 attempted more complex graphics and effects it is commendable that only those glitches were evident.
Time to dust off some of those old games and check them again.

I would suggest not going back to play Killzone. While the graphics were decent for PS2 (certainly nowhere near MGS3 or GoW), the game was not that good. It's certainly nowhere near what Killzone 2 ended up being, and it will really disappoint you if your KZ2 memories are fresh.

Actually I'd disagree. It was a very good game with good graphics. The fact that it was story driven (rather than most FPS's that had barely a story to justify you gunning down everything in sight) and that you had visible, talking character, made the game a great experience. I'd recommend to anyone to go back and play regardless of whether you played K2 or not. If you haven't, it will be a great intro to the story arc. If you have, a great reminder of how the franchise got started and the amazing feats that Guerrilla did with the hardware back then.

I remember playing KZ for the multiplayer aspect. I had many hours of fun playing it with my friends and people online.
