The average American viewed over 9 million advertising messages over the past decade -- logically, a few would stick out in your mind as being better than the rest. Advertising trade publication Adweek recently voted on the best piece of video marketing to be released this decade. Two video game ads you might remember made the final nominees: "Diorama," for Halo 3, and "Mountain," for the PlayStation 2.
Sadly, both of these ads lost to Honda's "Grrr" ad -- if only Sony's "Horrifying, Reverse-Weeping Baby" spot had made it into the list of nominees, the company could have brought home the gold.

90's game commercials were awesome and creative. Now it is just CG bs.

I just realized, that commercial would be significantly better if set to "The Thieving Magpie".
...and now, I wait and see if anyone gets my drift.

no he means the "Mountain" one, the one the article linked to, it was a PS2 commercial where a bunch of people in what looks like some old European city start piling onto each other by the hundreds

I found it really annoying, how the hell did that win? The message barely makes sense and the song is really grating on the ears.
I think the best commercial of the decade goes to the Bravia balls commercial.

That Halo 3 ad campaign was incredible. Maybe too much, I got so into it, particularly because of the incredible addition of emotion from Chopin's Raindrop and the old "veterans" that I unwisely expected a similar tone from Halo 3. : ( still kinda wish it had been more like that, same goes for ODST and the We Are ODST commercial

Agreed. Probably my favorite set of ads in recent memory.
Also agree on the hope that Halo 3 was anywhere near that epic. :/
I really love both Gears commercials too. The Mad World one was just so unique and the exact opposite of what you would think the typical commercial for a Gears-type game would be (but works perfectly. The one for Gears 2 topped it in every way.

I think the commercials to me really represent Halo's failures to fully realize it;s potential. The Believe ads, the Landfall short film, the We Are ODST commercial and all the books are really incredible great things full of wonderfully detailed greatly written plots in the case of the books at least, and very evocative of emotions and tone while being very simple for the ads. I still love Halo, but I feel like if it had ever been treated with the same kind of tone and seriousness and attention to plot it could have been so much better

There are a number of barriers between me and the purchase of a Halo game (the most significant being that I don't own an X360), but I really did like the ads for Halo 3. The "veteran" interviews painted this powerful picture of looking back on a point in history when humanity was just about to be snuffed out. It was an epic idea conveyed from an intimate perspective, especially the one where they cut out the lights and completed the interview in the dark.
It's kind of a shame to hear that the game didn't capture that kind of mood.

Starry Night is probably my favorite game ad of all time (i get all tingly when chief jumps off the cliff at the end), with We Are ODST and the Gears 1 Mad World ad very close behind.
but given Reach's plot, i could definitely see it having more of that somber, emotional tone you're talking about.

This commercial gets a nod from me, probably shows too much game footage to have been considered though:

Wow, I don't remember the Honda or the PS2 commercial. At least now I know that Sony had no clue how to make good advertisements for Playstation even before PS3 and PSP.
"Play the world online" doesn't resonate with PS2 at all. Maybe Xbox could have pulled that slogan with XBL

I liked the "Jump in" commercials when 360 first came out, especially the unfortunately banned one where an entire subway station full of people just kill each other with finger guns yelling "Bam!" that really fit the whole online kick

Was that halo commercial showing an actual scene from the game? Not rendered obviously, but does that chief ever get captured and held like that?

Nah it was made by some special effects company who had been contracted by whoever did the advertising for Microsoft. It's supposed to represent the 2nd Battle of New Mombassa, only in Halo, that never happened. It was one big ol' continuity error, but Bungie rectified it by saying that since the ads are presented in universe style, that it was also a big ol' coverup by the UNSC to keep humanity uninformed about the Halos and the Chiefs real fate. Still, awesome commercials
