Top Gun on iPhone is one of the device's many hidden treasures. Not only does it have cool, After Burner-esque gameplay, it's also got one of the best easter eggs of all time (as you can see above). Unsurprisingly, nailing the unintentional humor of the movie is one of the things that Freeverse designer Justin Ficarrotta says his team got right in a new postmortem published on Gamasutra.
The dev's top mistake? Using the wrong plane, or at least a different plane than the one fans were counting on. But again -- and we don't think we can stress this enough -- you get to play volleyball with the disembodied heads of Maverick and Ice Man. Doesn't that grant some sort of perma-forgiveness?

I understand the mistake... I mean, c'mon- the F-22 and F-14 look so similar!

Wait, they used a Raptor? A jet that didn't even exist when the movie came out?

We didn't get the two jets confused.
We wanted to update the game to show a passage of time with a more modern jet.
When we looked back on this, to do it all over again, we would of stuck with a jet from the movie.
If you play the game, it takes place years after the movie with Maverick and Iceman as instructors. (If you watch the movie, the top Pilot in the Top Gun program is invited back to be an instructor).

Exactly. Top Gun is a Navy program, so they would be flying Navy jets. If you didn't feel the F-18 Super Hornet was new enough, you could have at least used the F-23 JSF, which looks similar to the Raptor, but comes in both a Navy and a Marine variant, and might actually be found on an aircraft carrier. Seems like you guys put more thought into the Easter egg then you did the actual game, and that's going to piss off any Navy personel that might have picked it up. Maybe doing your homework next time might be a good idea, if you plan on making another military game.

im with Bruce. the raptor isnt a navy plane, its not designed to land on carriers and would probably never show up at Top Gun. shouldve used the super hornet or even the f-35 JSF. the jsf isnt even out yet but at least it was a navy bird..
easter eggs can be clever but they have to make sense to somebody. then again its not my game, im not buyin it so whutdoicare
