EA has just announced that a new round of pummelers and pummelees have signed on for EA Sports MMA. The game's site lists seven new fighters in total: Cung Le, Gilbert Melendez, Robbie Lawler, Ronaldo Souza, Matt Lindland, Scott Smith, and Josh Thomson -- a few of whom have participated in UFC fights in the past. Considering the UFC president's stance toward EA's game, we have to wonder if their participation jeopardizes their chances with the UFC in the future.
We've also got a few in-game screenshots for you to train with. Practice your virtual arm bars by checking 'em out in the gallery below.

My knowledge of MMA doesn't extend much further than what goes on in the UFC, so I'm not really interested in playing a game where I don't know who the fighters are...
I guess that's my problem, but I also guess that's going to affect their sales all the same.

Thats part of the general problem with modern day MMA fans is they think that the UFC = MMA. But, they do have some big name guys in the game like Couture and Fedor that even casual MMA fans like yourself will recognize. It could be an issue which is another reason I think EA should get some of these retired fighters that I mentioned in my post into the game. Looks to me they are going for the hardcore crowd with this game. If the game is good I'll buy it because as good as Undispited was it still had some major flaws.

This has basically evolved into Strikeforce MMA ... and thats not a bad thing. In terms of those guys going to the UFC: not likely. Dana is full of it anyway as he proved with resigning Couture to a long term deal after he agreed to be part of EA's MMA. Strikeforce has carved out their own niche and with the signings of Henderson and Fedor will only continue to gain more mainstream appeal. I'd still like them to include some retired fighters like Cabbage, Severn, Frye, Gracie, Ken Shamrock, Rutten, Kerr and all those older cage guys who aren't in the UFC anymore. I'd love to play as El Guapo!!!

Yeah thats what I was trying to say. After re-reading my comment I meant to say there is no way Dana wouldn't let these guys into the UFC if they wanted in and the Couture thing just reinforces his bluff and strongarm tactics.

You understand the UFC is a promotion and not a league right? That'd be like saying who wants don king or goldenboy retreads in a boxing game. Couldn't one also say that UFC is full of Pride FC retreads that no one cares for? Get over it man and love the sport not the promoters. Be a fan of the fighters not the suits.

The UFC is a fighting promotion not a league. Dana White is a promoter not a commissioner. The NFL is a league, the NBA is a league and MLB is a league. MMA doesn't have a league like boxing doesn't have leagues it has a series of promoters. The difference is that boxing promoters co-promote events to put on fights fans want to see (goosen tudor, goldenboy, top rank, don king etc) and the manny pacquiao vs floyd mayweather fight is an event co-promoted by two seperate promoters that each individually manage their fighters.
A league is an 'association' of sports teams that organizes matches for its members. There is no collective bargaining agreement between the fighters and management in the UFC in terms of compensation or liabbility coverage.
It's a pretty simple distinction actually. Some MMA promotions do co-promote (like dream and strikeforce) to put on fights from different promotions. But, it isn't a series of leagues it's a series of fight promotions and fight promoters. If there were an MMA league it would oversee all fighting promotions and that'll never ever happen on Dana's watch because it would mean giving up his authortarian control.

So..........was XFL a league or a promotion? I still don't think the distinction is very well defined. A league certainly doesn't have to oversee all of the promotional companies that deal in that sport. Sort of like how the NFL had no control over the XFL (or the CFL). And I don't think you need a collective bargaining agreement to be considered a league. From Wikipedia "League is a term commonly used to describe a group of sports teams or individual athletes that compete against each other in a specific sport. At its simplest, it may be a local group of amateur athletes who form teams among themselves and compete on weekends; at its most complex, it can be an international professional league making large amounts of money and involving dozens of teams and thousands of players." Under the basic definition of the word, UFC is a league.

Actually the UFC calls itself a promotion and it's what they are. A league has individual owners of said teams and has players association to bargain on behalf of it's members. A league would be the individual promotions fighting under one banner where fights would happen independent of promotion. As it stands all MMA and boxing is done through promoters and promotions not leagues. If the UFC and MMA in general wants to go mainstream there will eventually have to be minimum guaranteed compensation and fighters unions.
In the NFL you are employed by the team owner whose club is a member of a league. In MMA you are contracted with the promotion who isn't bound by collective barganing. Same thing with the defunct AFL though I've never really heard of xfl. But I think that's the one Vince mcmahon owned and there were unions, cba's and individual club owners which made it a league.
As far as know the IFL (intl fight league) is the only organization that tried that league concept. It was teams of fighters who would face off at certain events. Though I'm not familiar with their business structure to say either way.
Dana White will tell you he is a promoter because he doesn't want cba's, mandatory minimum compensation and the other things that go along with being a league. There is no UFC fighters association it's every man for himself and whatever their mgmt agrees with in negotiations.
Ufc is a promotion not a league the same way it is in boxing. There is no league championship or seasons it's a constant promotion. Dana would tell you the same thing.

I'm not big on Wikipedia but since you quoted it let's see what they say about the UFC:
"The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a U.S.-based MMA promotion. Dana White serves as the president of the UFC while Zuffa, LLC (controlled by Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta) owns the company.[2][3][4]"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultimate_Fighting_Championship
Here is what they say about the IFL:
The International Fight League was an American mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion billed as the world's first MMA league. It was founded on January 7, 2006 and closed on July 31, 2008.[1] Instead of the established norm for MMA events, where matchups are strictly one-on-one affairs, each IFL card was a showdown between two camps of at least three fighters, each fighter fighting one match against another in the opposing camps.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Fight_League
This should give you an idea about what being a promoter entails:

Nothing more homo erotic than two dudes trying to beat the hell out of each other or snap one anothers arms in half! totally gay. If you'd feel more comfortable maybe we get them to sanction wearing a lumberjack esque plaid flannel jackets and levi's 50 jeans to each fight. That way you wouldn't have to see their ... chest and legs. Maybe they can wear some Lugz boots as well because bare feet are totally gay.
On a more serious note you sure do live up to your handle an awful lot.

I would Consider this a sport right next to Boxing. i was a fan of wrestling when a kid cause of the stunts they did and i knew itr was fake but got repetitive years later so i stopped watching it .. but since i played UFC 2009 i watched a bit of it when i can and i think it's great i would love too see the Fights in person.
am i looking forward too 2010 ? not really will it be fun probably but i hope it plays the same and not a entirely different Experience. UFC 2009 is a good game the only thing i hate in that game is the fact that they made one of the trophies alot harder within a patch i have yet to get i'm very close to platinum that's the one thing i hated about it.
now as for this MMA game. i'm sorry but i think i'l stick too UFC as where this is where i am getting too know the fighters the back ground history to the fighters as well, as this MMA will include people from MMA i never heard of before and or won't be seeing on my TV anytime soon. doesn't mean it can't be good but i think i'l stay away from this MMA title.

@Hardboiled
Let me give you a few resources since you are interested in MMA.
http://mmavideolinks.to/fighter-videos.html
This is a great site that indexes MMA fights by the fighters themselves. It is a great way to watch fighters you may of never seen before but have heard of like Dan Henderson or Fedor Emelianenko. I'd highly suggest bookmarking the site.
http://www.gowamma.com/ is a site that ranks fighters independent of their affiliation with a promotion or organization. It's a great way to see who the MMA journalist feel is the best fighter in each weight class. I'd not only suggest watching UFC events but also WEC (comes on versus network), Strikeforce (CBS & Showtime) and Dream & Sengoku (HDnet).
http://www.bloodyelbow.com/ is a blog (like this one about video games) dedicated to the sport of MMA. It will help you keep up with current events, different promotions and fighters. It's the holy grail of MMA blogs online.
Hope those are good resources!!!!

The only way I'll buy UFC again is if they change the gameplay(it's too much like their wrestling game). I cannot comment about the online portion of UFC however because I only played the Superstars that were available and did not create my own thus a lot of people using GSP in welter because he had the highest rating etc. FNR4 had a great online because everybody has the same rating whichever your style is. I'm hoping this is implemented in EA MMA as well.

If guys they announced don’t sound like big names to you, then you’re not watching enough MMA. Some of the best fighters in the word fight outside of the UFC. All the guys listed there: Cung Le, Gilbert Melendez, Robbie Lawler, Ronaldo Souza, Matt Lindland, Scott Smith, and Josh Thomson have top 10 talent in their weight class. Well maybe not Scott Smith so much, but he has main evented an Elite XC show on CBS. If you don’t think there is talent outside of the UFC, just listen to UFC announcer Joe Rogan. He said during BJ Penn’s destruction of Diego Sanchez that UFC needs to sign Shinya Aoki the DREAM Lightweight champ because me might actually be able to give Penn a good fight unlike anyone the UFC has.
Also Strikeforce will be having more nationally televised shows on CBS in the coming year, which will make some of these fighters more well known and provide major exposure to this game. I just hope it can deliver. UFC Undisputed 2009 was the best MMA game ever, but it is far from perfect.
