Sony may trump the Natal and Wii. But then Natal and Wii will just continue to add similar/new features making Sony's not so spectacular anymore. Rinse and repeat. I hope they do better than Natal and Wii. It means more push for the shove.

Motion control, 3d gaming, and the inevitable flood of shovelware that will follow it will make 2010 probably the worst year in gaming history...even with Mass Effect 2 coming out.

I'm frustrated with it because there's no point to it. There's no benefit to motion controls over regular controls, it's just a different way to do the same damn thing we've always done (and in most cases, a worse way).

As for 3D gaming, you want me to go out and buy a ridiculously expensive TV just to support pretty pictures popping out at me? Like someone said below, it's going to be the year of the pointless gimmick.

It's not as if they can only do one thing at a time...just because they are making Motion Controlled games for one audience doesn't mean they aren't going to deliver for the hardcore gamer....2010 will probably go down as one of the best years in gaming. Sony's exclusive lineup is remarkable:

God War 3
Final Fantasy
Heavy Rain
Final Fantasy XIV
Yakuza 3
Gran Turismo 5
M.A.G.
Mod Nation Racers
White Night Chronicles
DC Universe Online (Maybe)
The Agency (Maybe)
The Last Guardian (Hopefully)

Besides if they put an analog stick on that motion controller...great things could happen in the right developers hands. But we probably wont see any thing for the hardcore till 2011

you can get a 3d tv for as low as $899 for a 60 inch wd-60737
and as low as $3,200 for an 82 inch wd-82737

hardly ridiculously expensive

@ gamedude - I just bought a TV, no way in hell I'm buying another for some passing fad like 3D (especially considering 3D tech is rapidly evolving, why buy into it so early?!?). I'm going down like my grandparents. Keep the same blasted television until it craps out on me or something truly better comes along (Colour > 1080p > Smellovision).

Damnit, Sony, why can't you every figure out how to plays to your strengths?

At this moment in time, Sony has two very, very good things going for them:

1) In the period June 2009 - June 2010, Sony boasts the best core-gamer software lineup of the three console makers (an absolute miracle, considering their financial challenges to date)

2) At $300, Sony is now offering a reasonably priced media magic box for all of the A/V enthusiasts. It only does everything!

These are the strengths that Sony should be leveraging over the next year to build up their install base, and dig out of their money hole. Instead, Koller says their three priorities are... what?

1) Motion Controller. Look, there's a case to be made for this, but if you're going to promote retard controllers, you have to go full retard, like Microsoft is with Natal. The way they are half-assing this feels like Playstation Home, where they invest a lot of money into it but don't follow through hard enough to build up support.

2) 3-D games. Remember back in 2006, when PS3 pushed Blu-Ray about 3 years ahead of its time, before there was any consumer adoption of the standard? Remember when Sony lost one billion dollars trying to push an expensive new standards that consumers weren't ready for yet? I don't know why that suddenly came to mind.

3) PSN. You've got to support this, but this is not one of your core strengths. Sony still has not figured out how to fund this. They partly rely on pushing infrastructure costs to software developers, and will partly rely on increased consumer fees in the future. But if Sony feels that PSN is positioned to be a major player in the media download space like iTunes or Netflix, they are misreading the marketplace.

I thought Nintendo had already been kiddie friendly? Or did i misinterpret what everyone was bitching about all of last generation?

If anything, 2010 seems to affirm that Nintendo can pursue a balanced strategy, and do it well. They're releasing (and localizing) a sequel to Sin and Punishment, for instance, an impossibly niche game, and an impossibly niche game that will benefit broadly from motion controls.

Incorrect: the very fact that The Last Guardian is coming out invalidates all shovelware.

Basically, if 2010 was a JRPG, The Last Guardian would cast an area-of-effect spell for 100 damage to anything caught in the area (area is equal to 6 months in either direction), and we all know that shovelware averages about 50 health.

"He even teased the concept of "placing you as a consumer into the game physically" -- an idea he called "the Holy Grail of gaming.""

That would actually be kind of cool if the PS Eye (or whatever it's called now) could somehow take a body scan of you and allow you to control yourself or something with the Sony Motion Dildo.
Unfortunately, I'm not counting on that. I don't think we're quite to that point yet. If anything, I'm expecting it to map your face to a generic character model. I've seen webcam software that does that...it's kinda creepy, really. It can make you into a talking snowman or cat or what-have-you on screen.

It could be camera based, but I see it being simpler than that -- Replacing Nathan Drake, Solid Snake, and Desmond Miles with your 'Home' avatar. In fact, when thinking about Naughty Dog's impressive lip syncing technology, it could be rather cool...

I think maybe "placing you as a consumer into the game physically" is actually about combining the 3D and Motion control technologies to create a feeling of actually "touching" the game world. That sounds more along the lines of "the Holy Grail of gaming." That's just sci-fi-cool. Or maybe it's just a gimmick.

PSN, sure. Motion control, maybe. 3D... come on, Sony. If you're banking on that, I have a feeling you're going to be very disappointed.

And speaking of PSN, if you want to beef it up so badly, how about adding a REALLY comprehensive library of PS1 Classics? Like, at the very least the same as in Japan? I would (re-)buy Xenogears and Final Fantasy VIII in a heartbeat.

Madden's suckiness on Wii has nothing to do with the controls (which isn't to say that the controls have been the best for Madden Wii, but it's irrelevant to the point), it's EA's strange idea that Wii owners don't want features at all, so that they came trim out virtually everything but quickplay like they did with Madden 10

I'm confused by that part. Nintendo dominated the family games market, and Microsoft pretty much has the shooter market. Look at MW2, it sold twice as much on the xbox. I don't even know where this is coming from considering sony's exclusive list for next year. GoWIII, Heavy Rain, GT5 don't fit anywhere in those catagories. MAG is a shooter and while it may be good I'm really not expecting it to be a runaway success.

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't sony have the GOTY on their system right now in Uncharted 2? Its like they take 3 steps forward then about face and start sprinting backwards. Exclusive games like Uncharted 2 would do a hell of a lot more for the system them trying to engage a new market with Motion control and 3d.

I said it before and I will say it again, the console company that makes a control scheme that is simple and accessible enough for anybody to pick up and feel comfortable with from day one, is the company that will really break through. Instead of motion control Sony and MS should have been looking for new ways to control games that could be implemented with games as complex as mass effect to games as simple as say zack and wiki.

The wii makes the user feel comfortable, and from there people take an interest in using the system. Anybody that taps into that market, will see the same instant success. Sony doesn't need motion control they need games that are complex enough that they don't insult the audience's intellect. While having controls simple enough that don't befuddle and discourage new gamers.

Notice Sony has done NOTHING innovative this gen. Took out rumble calling it a last gen feature to later add it back in. Add motion controls with the 6 axis to copy Wii with some type of motion control a launch. Now copying the Wii to the tee with this new one. Completely rip off Xbox Live. But hey at least it has bluray.... oh and it only does everything. Lol.

He didn't say that, he said Sony hasn't done anything innovative, and he's kinda right when you think about it. Wii is obvious, and 360 created achievements and refined xbox live into the online powerhouse that it is today. Sony just copied everyone.

I guess you could say Home is innovative, but it's also completely boring and terrible.

Sony's motion controller is camera based and allows for 1-1 tracking, completely different from the Wii's system of sensors. I believe they were the first to offer full retail titles of current games on their online store, which was pretty innovative.

I kinda agree with you...Sony has been late to almost every party this gen. But like Apple, they usually don't invent anything new but they take what others have done and make them better. (usually). Although their hardware is/was innovative on its on. The PS3 is starting to show just how much above the curve it was as they others are starting to get a little long in the tooth.

And HOME does suck...but hey...somebody out there obviously loves it.
