And now you can find those gold editions on ebay for less than 10 dollars. Go figure.

I'll still cherish my golden editions though, especially the gold edition of Ocarina of Time.

My girlfriend bought me a copy of MvC2 for xbox after months of searching for a decent copy at B+Ms. The DLC release was announced two weeks later. ><

Oh well, a physical copy of the game is something I've always wanted and it was an extremely thoughtful gift on her part, so no worries. It's not like I ever intend to resell it.

Also, I'm not surprised that prices went down, what surprises me is when prices go up.

Easy, all you gotta do is give Darth Bradwart a nice +1 anytime you see evil doers making his perfectly acceptable comments fade away. It does not require that you give him +1 if he speaks out of line, says something ignorant, flames/trolls, or anything of the like, but you can if you wish to.

It's just a nice way to let people know that I think what they did/are doing is stupid.

Also, yeah, the article did show up earlier. I think they posted it but then changed the posted time. My comment was posted 2 hours or so before the article claims it went up. This tells me that Joystiq can post an article with an artificial creation time and it will wait until that time to be displayed... or something like that.

MGS1 is actually back in print oddly enough. It's part of the "essential collection" boxed set, which includes MGS 1-3 (the subsistence editions I believe) for like 20 bucks on Amazon (and probably elsewhere).

I picked up a copy a few months back. My original discs are showing their age, and MGS3 is one of those games that I replay over and over.

Persona 2's price has gone up because it hasn't been reissued. Additionally, Persona 3 and Persona 4 were very popular for niche RPGs, and Atlus also released a remake of Persona 1 for PSP. So Persona 2 is the only one that doesn't have an easily-obtainable edition in the market. It stands to reason that a lot of new fans who picked up the newer games have subsequently wanted to get the one remaining game, and that has driven its price up.

Meanwhile watching the prices of Nocturne and both DDS titles makes me feel like I'm working the stock market.

I'm still mad about P3P since my hopes were unreasonably high that a remake of Persona 2 would be next. Boy I hope they release it again (all of it).

I think they are referring to when they did a very small print of persona 2 again about a year ago. They reprints looked exactly like the original issue and went for $40 on Amazon. That was when I snagged my copy.

Game collecting was fun back when there weren't roms of every old game ever created available to be played over a java-based emulator whenever you feel the urge.

Then again, I do love going into a used game store and searching for gems. Ebay kind of ruined the fun though, since there isn't a game in existence (that I can afford anyway) that I can't buy from there whenever I want.

I actually really enjoy wandering around second hand stores and garage sales looking for old NES carts that I don't already have. I don't collect actively, but I do enjoy the process of collecting NES carts, despite being able to play all X thousand of them easily in ROM format.

That having been said, I really don't have a lot of respect for people who do it for the cartridge values. They drive up the price of games that people might actually want to play, denying others the experience with the hope of profit. Titles like Radiant Silvergun, which become outside of the realm of anyone playing them, except for the devoted collector and the people hoping to maul them for their cash.

I can't remember any particular titles off the top of my head, but there have been numerous times over the years where I was desperate to play a game, but couldn't find a copy.

Actually, I do remember one. Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout for the original Playstation. I looked everywhere for a copy, and could never find one. On the then newly minted internet, prices were absurd (in the 100-300 dollar range) if you could even find a copy. I now know that it is an awful game, but I enjoyed the hell out of it when I finally found a used copy sitting non-chalantly on the shelf of a used game store for fifty dollars.

Rarity used to mean that you couldn't play a game period. Now it just means that you need to find a rom or an iso. Things will never be the same in that regard, which is definitely a good thing, but it's still a tad bittersweet.

Well the best recent example is Capcom Re-releasing SFIV, but with extras. Which had so many people selling their copy of SFIV, resulting in a drop of value.

Sometimes, you literally have no choice.

Panzer Dragoon Saga is the ultimate example of this. The development team has been disbanded, the source code lost, and only 30,000 copies were printed for U.S. Saturns. If you want it, you've got to pay out the ass.

Yea, and like I said, I'd never pay for it. Are there not Saturn Emulators and roms of this game? I know sega made a USB saturn controller that you could use. What's the point of buying the game legit if it's not going to support the people who made it or at least own it.

Ideally sega would just develop their own saturn emulator for the PSN and XBLA and release gems like this for $6 a pop.

@Bradwart - I'm sure someone has created an ISO of it. Someone always does, even for the rarest of games.

CaramelZappa - I agree with you. Luckily there are so many hoarders out there that all but the rarest of games can be had for dirt cheap on auction sites. Unless you want the games factory sealed that is.

Saturn emulation is buggy at best, unfortunately. Emulating twin CPU's and twin GPU's is hard. I think you need a minimum of a P4 3.0GHz to run the emulators at a decent framerate.

The hardware requirements of emulation have kept me away, even though I am curious about modifying old games. My friend has a much beefier gaming rig than mine, and there are scores of games that he can't run (all of which he owns, and most of them PS2 games).

It's nice to know that the option is out there though, especially for the ultra rare games that we'd never be able to play otherwise.

Radiant Silvergun ran quite well on my PC, though it is a simple Sega Saturn game to emulate being mostly 2D and the cutscenes did not work, I just tried it really quickly. I should try it again and do some tweaking. I've also played some Ikaruga fine on a Gamecube emulator.

Man, emulating the 360 and PS3 are going to be a BITCH. : )

Emulators FTW!!!

Naah, 360 will be easy. It's a simple tri-core processor with a simple GPU design.

Now, emulating the Cell and the RSX? There isn't a processor around that can do that .

The only issue is waiting for Moore's Law to do its thing. Not that I'm going to be emulating either console any time soon, considering that I own both and that there isn't any rare software for either platform.

Speaking of which, my mind is being blown bit by bit as I look up prices for old games on Ebay. I just found Lunar for the Sega Saturn for 10 dollars. I paid 100 or so for that game new on the PS1, and even then, I always heard people say that the Sega Saturn version was far superior and that it was impossible to find. Unless I'm thinking of a completely different game, it is a bit odd how little value used games seem to have these days.

The economy really yanked the bottom out of the used market, which us why I've been acquiring so many games at crazy prices lately. I mean, I paid 8 dollars for Suoer Metroid. Used to be much higher.

This is basically why I don't seriously collect anything for any reason other than nostalgia. I collected baseball cards as a kid, and it's become obvious to even the most casual observer that they are pretty much completely worthless today (unless they are rookie cards of extremely old time players). The same goes for everything that people always used to say would be worth something some day (Beanie Babies, first edition Pokemon cards, etc).

Part of me wants to buy all of these cheap games I'm finding, but the sensible person within me knows that they don't have any real value, and that they would just clutter up my life.

I will grab Lunar though. I've always wanted to play the Saturn version.

Saturn has been emulated for years on the PS2 in Japan as mostly part of the SEGA Ages Series, I have Panzer Dragoon, NiGHTS into Dreams, Virtua Cop Collection, etc ... All run smooth and NiGhTS has upgraded graphics as well ... I would think that PSN and XBLA could handle the emulation as well ...

Panzer Dragoon Saga is one of my Crown Jewels in my collection ...

I'm with BananaBoat here...I love keeping a collection of my old games, but honestly they've only taken up space. As nostalgic as it is, as time progresses I find myself buying less and less of the "rare" jewels. I even fell into the trap of getting Gunstar Heroes on PSN the other night, and as much as I used to love that game, I've gotten spoiled with all the new tech/shiny graphics of our current gen. I've got a Dreamcast that sits in my coat closet (in a case, calm down) and is pretty much never played, despite the years I spent enjoying Power Stone/Rush 2049/Quake 3/Unreal Tournament/etc. Emulation and/or Arcade/PSN releases, FTW.

I saw this in person many years ago when Square re-released Chrono Trigger on the PS1. Before that copies of the SNES version were outrageously high and soon after the PS1 version was released they dropped to what I considered reasonable enough to buy since I wanted a copy for my SNES since that was the format I had originally fallen in love with the game in. Wish something similar would happen to Earthbound.

Wait--yes it was. Like a year or so ago Atlus sent around an e-mail saying they printed up some new copies and they were available at Amazon for $40. That's how I got my copy. It sold out extremely quickly. That MTV article has a link to Destructoid's coverage of the rerelease:

http://www.destructoid.com/atlus-announces-an-amazon-exclusive-rerelease-of-persona-2-eternal-punishment-111351.phtml

I always laugh when I see Amazon offering a 5 dollar trade-in for Persona 2, by the way.

That "reprint" was available for no more than an hour before they sold out (they didn't put a limit on how many you could buy, so "hoarders" bought dozens of copies and turned around and sold them for double the profit).

Atlus screwed that one up.

That hardly counts as a reprint on the scale of posting a game like Castlevania on the PSN.
