The always enjoyable Video Games Live concert series will have a performance taped and shown on PBS stations next year. The recorded performance will occur February 5, 2010, at the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans. Tickets, which start at $15, go on sale Friday, December 18 at 10AM CST (check Ticketmaster or call 800-745-3000).
We contacted VGL Executive Producer Tommy Tallarico to find out about special guests for this televised concert. He told us that the performance is still in the early planning stages and wishes he had more to share. Tallarico explained, "The only thing I could really say for sure right now is that we are not only going to have special guests from the gaming world -- game composers and game designers from around the world -- we're also going to have special musical guests and celebrities not from the gaming world, but who are very well known and fantastic performers."
For the rest of us not near Mardi Gras land, the concert will begin airing in June on your local PBS station and a DVD/Blu-ray version will be distributed worldwide. All of this sounds like a very clever way for PBS to attract a younger demographic. Also, if you attend the taped concert, make sure to dress business casual. Greasy gamers in T-shirts and jeans don't make for good crowd shots.

Grow up. O'Donnell is the best game composer there is. Considering he founded Total Audio Studios, not Bungie, there's a huge difference.

@Master of Disaster
The collective Halo scores are magnificent, I don't care what you happen to think of Bungie.

In 2008, I went to a Video Games Live concert in my area, and fortunately Marty O'Donnell was one of the guest composers there. He even conducted the Halo 1-3 suite and it was awesome.
I definitely agree with Darth Bradwart. He's one of the best composers out there.

I think you just didn't get it. VGL isn't supposed to be a high-society show during which you listen to the quiet jazz music and sip wine.
It's supposed to be wild and celebratory of video games.

i was referring to the article asking anyone attending to try to not look like greasy slobs in tee shirts and jeans.
i enjoyed the cosplay a bit, since most people who did were very good and not 200lb men wearing a princess peach costume.
everyone freaking out over one winged angel was nice too :)

It was pretty horrible when I went.
-Tommy Tallarico acted quite the tool.
-The crowd was cheering during each song, meaning you heard nothing.
-I have a suspicion the music was actually pre-recorded...
-Cosplay contest during the intermission. Seriously?
It was obvious that I wasn't the target demographic of this concert.

Certain parts are prerecorded; e.g., the Metal Gear Solid theme uses some electronic instruments which are not part of any orchestra. However, the show overall is definitely not prerecorded. In the one I attended, the freaking flutes completely blew their first notes in Liberi Fatali. It was so obvious.

I'm going to pick up tickets tomorrow morning. The arena is right down the street from my house.
