Okay, former Warhammer Online subscriber. You've had your fun, doing things that don't involve experience grinding or inter-Realm sparring. Now it's time to come back home. Developer Mythic Entertainment has revealed that the MMO has opened its arms up to its first sons and daughters, allowing former players to come back for a free 10-day trial. During this time, trial players can access all of the game's recently added content, and can even pick up three exclusive in-game items.
The offer is live right now, and will run until December 23. If you happened to delete the game from your hard drive in a fit of rage, you can re-download the WAR client from the game's official site.

Unless they radically overhauled the game and merged all the servers into something at least populated where the public quests get used then I'm not going to bother.
My biggest regret MMO-wise is that fucking Warhammer Online box just sitting there. I bought it on launch day and it was just awful. For some reason the BETA was a lot more fun and I based my purchase on that.
Then I bought the game and... man, it really could have used like another year of polish alone. Just so awful.
It's sad, too, cause I'm generally a fan of the Warhammer universe.

It wasn't nearly as awful as you're crying about. Definitely not at launch. The best parts of the game were everything pre-lvl25ish. After that, the questing wasn't tuned correctly so leveling up became too difficult. Other city raid type events were pointless. etc. etc.
They actually did merge a lot of servers, retune a ton of things, and change lots of things that people complained about, on top of adding 2-3 new classes for free.
Just sayin'

I played it during beta and could barely stay logged in for more than 15mins at a time. I wasn't going to get it when it came out but my sister wanted me to get it with her so we could play it. Unfortunately she only played it for about a week and we never even got to group.

How nice is the box and books inside it? You can get the CE of WAR for like 15 bucks now and I'm considering getting it just for its aesthetics.

Pretty much everything after level 20 was half-finished, half-polished, and half-broken at the best of times. Quests that lead to dungeons, enemies, even whole zones which didn't exist yet, PvP that was entirely designed around zerging the opposition into submission, and a very limited selection of decent-looking gear. I mean, when your level 20 stuff looks way more badass than your level 30 stuff, and your level 40 stuff looks like level 10 stuff... Blargh.
Kickass, richly developed universe, but Mythic was in over their heads and under-financed. I'd rather wait for the next big thing than go back to something that left me feeling so disappointed with wasted potential.

To be fair, PvP zerging is more of a player fault than a game one. It tends to happen in most games from a severe lack of coordination. If you can actually get people into Vent, things change considerably.
And Mythic did redo class armor sets to be more impressive.

I played WAR for an entire two days before I canceled my account. Sorry, Mythic, but no amount of changes you make to the game will undo the bad taste it left in my mouth to begin with, and no amount of free time (even infinite free time) will make me want to play your generic WoW ripoff.
I know, there are plenty of people that like WAR, and I liked it in theory too when I first heard about it. But it WAY undershot those expectations.
Although to be fair, I'm damn tired of every MMO that comes out ripping off WoW. I get it, it's a successful formula, but if we're not careful, WoW will become to MMOs what Doom became to FPSs. That is, the default standard that will only be marginally surpassed for years to come.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go play Super Mario World and live under my nostalgic rock, where everything is better because of the rose-colored tint of nostalgia. If you need me, send me a telegram.

Just to clarify something... the Warcraft universe is actually based/inspired by/lovingly created as a homage to Warhammer. Not the other way around.
That is all.

I'm not talking about the universe. I'm talking about gameplay.

So, what, you want an MMO without quests or class abilities? The idea that these are somehow unique to WoW and not simply functions of the genre baffles me.
If you want to call WAR generic because it has elves and dwarves, I think you're unfairly ignoring the distinctive elements like Chaos or the grim setting. And Blizzard did not invent half of what's in WoW, so calling any MMO a ripoff of that game is just plain wrong. You might as well call WoW a ripoff of Everquest, or Ultima Online.
As a longtime WoW player who has put maybe a month into WAR, the differences were immediately apparent:
In WoW, you have one PvE level bar and you can do PvP arenas/battlegrounds for Honor points, which get cashed in for PvP-centric rewards.
In WAR, the PvE experience is richer from public quests and Chapter/Tier influence progression; the main PvP experience is integrated right into the world with PvP lakes and city sieges; you're given a separate PvP level with its own set of purchasable abilities, killed players have their own loot tables, and there are new vendor rewards as you progress; the Tome of Knowledge provides a rich context to the gameworld and your gameplay; and Mythic hosts regular Live Events that are larger and more detailed than WoW's simple holiday boss farm.
WAR's faults, imo, lie entirely within the technical side of things. The game ran badly on my fairly good gaming PC last Christmas. However, trying it again this past Halloween for the Daemon Moon Rising live event, the performance was much improved. My only real sticking point is the way the game will cut framerate at a distance. The resulting herky-jerky movement of characters in the far distance is hard to ignore.
