In the roughly 24 hours since Square Enix dropped Final Fantasy XIII into retailers across Japan, over 1 million consumers have snagged the game for their PlayStation 3s. The Japanese publisher says that the number doesn't include the Lightning Edition PS3 hardware bundles, which would presumably add another handful of copies to the grand total. With another few months to go until North American gamers can hungrily grab up the sequel, we'll have to focus our time on jewelry contests instead.

Yup, no surprise here. FF is the Modern Warfare of Japan. Overrated game but it's still bought by the masses.

You mean well made games that do not change much from the previous one but sell so well because they are addictive and people know they will be able to sink over a hundred hours into leveling up. Everyone buys these because they know they will get their 60 dollars worth.

Are you talking about FFXIII? Better check out the internets. Apparently the game is basically an on-rails dungeon crawler now, a -huge- change from FFXII (but a throwback to FFX, kinda, which was in turn wildly different from its predecessors, and not in a good way).

"well" is an understatement.
"well" would be 200,000 copies in the first day.
1 million in 1 day is insane. Guess they earned back their development costs.

"Yeah, I don't think anyone is surprised by a JRPG made in Japan by a major Japanese developer would sell well."
Except that the exclusive RPGs on the 360 really didn't do too well.

You really think a jrpg would sell 6 million in virtually a day over here? Really???

You're vastly over-estimating the popularity of FF in today's climate. It will sell a million for sure, but only a heavily hyped shooter (or WoW) can do 3+ million in a single day now.

Probably not, because those weren't Final Fantasy. Hell, I wouldn't be shocked if this game blows....but it's still Final Fantasy. You could take a shit and put it in a FF 14 box and it will sell a million.

Klepto is talking about The Last Remnant, Star Ocean, etc. Not the FF series.

FF7 is my favorite game and led me to buy each FF after that, but I've found each one to be a little more disappointing than the last.
maybe its just cause ive gotten older now and it seems theyre still gearing them for kids, maybe even more than they used to, but a bunch of girls going around kicking bunnies isnt really my idea of a good time. Anymore.
but i guess ill still keep an eye out for this one out of habit. there must be something fun to do while i wait for diablo III

You are playing the wrong FF games. Bunch of girls? Bunnies? lol
Maybe VI will change your mind, since you said "after that" which I assume VIII-XII... Though... VIII, IX, X, and XII had no bunnies to kick. Hell, VII is the only one I can think of that had bunnies as an enemy.

FF7 is one of my favorite games ever too, maybe favorite but it turned out to be a double edged sword. All of the complaints and stereotypes about jrpgs can trace their origin back to FF7 and its legendary success. Of course, that doesn't give developers a free pass for being lazy.
But things change and people get older. I too am not interested in the childish themes and characters of FF anymore.

well i looked all over the final fantasy wiki for a pic to show how stupid you are and failed miserably. i coulda sworn i slaughtered some damn snow bunnies but ah
regardless i find the later entries of the series to be too coddling gameplay-wise and the plots..well, i cant even remember the plots of 9, X and X-2, even though i spent at least 40 hours on each of them.
i guess i had expected square to keep targeting all the fans they made 12 years ago as they got older instead of trying to find new fans just coming of age, but i certainly cant blame them for that. my loss i guess

No matter how good a game they make, it will never compare to FFVII in your, or anyone who originally played the came when it came out, eyes. Why? Nostalgia.
Comparing current games to decade old hits is an exercise in futility. If you played it back then, you'll be skewed by nostalgia. If you didn't, you'll be skewed by not playing it at the right time (i.e 10 years too late).
Bottom line, stop comparing every single JRPG to FFVII. Ultimately it's just gonna ruin your own experience.

I love the Elder Scrolls games, beat the shit out of Oblivion and Morrowind.
But since it is on 5 discs (correct me if wrong) it has to be a long game... You can only fit so much content on one disc so what's the other disc taking space for?

Cutscenes take up a lot of room. As does some other traits.
And 5 discs sounds very wrong. Maybe 3.
Look at FF's VII-IX. 3-4 discs, but only 100-200 hours on your first playthrough.

Jeeze what were you doing wrong? lol. My first playthrough of those games averaged 38 hours roughly. Even mastering those games didn't breach the 100 hour mark.
Still, realistically if you are decent at video games you should be able to clear any Final Fantasy game in 40-60 hours. But for me I like going through them multiple times if I like the story or overall experience enough.
