'Heavy Rain Chronicles' DLC, Collector's Edition announced

Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain just got heavier, both in content and in physical package size. Sony has detailed the first of the DLC releases that we confirmed earlier this week, called Heavy Rain Chronicles. The first DLC episode is an expanded version of the "bonus" taxidermist scene shown in 2008 and will be available "after the launch of Heavy Rain early next year" for an unannounced price. More downloadable episodes will be revealed later.

Sony Europe has also announced a Collector's Edition of the game (for Europe), which will include access to the expanded Taxidermist episode day-and-date with the retail release. The limited-edition box will include the DLC episode, along with a downloadable soundtrack and XMB theme, plus a cool "rain-effect" slipcase (pictured above). Sony didn't note a date for the Collector's Edition, so we'll just stick to our best guess: February 26. [Update: official release dates.]

While there's no announcement about a Collector's Edition for North America, according to PlayStation Blog, if you pre-order the standard edition, you will gain early access to the first "Chronicle" (or DLC episode). As in Europe, the DLC will be available for non-pre-orderers at an unspecified post-launch date, though the North American episodes have been priced at $4.99 each.

.... They're announcing DLC 2 months before the game has been released? Am I the only one seeing a problem with that?

Seems like collectors editions are offering very little these days. I'll guess that soon the only difference between collectors and normal will be the box art. But with the platinum collectors ed. you get the bonus making of DVD. With the Ultimate Collectors ed. you get the making of DVD plus DLC of an extra useless in-game item.

I understand what you mean but with most DLC episodes now averaging $10+ packaged DLC with the game is very much welcomed as long as it doesnt increase the price way too much. And i do hate how collectors edtion now means a making of DVD or soundtrack.

Terrible box art, in my opinion. From all the gameplay footage, stills, all the other jazz, I'm kinda shocked they went with this. I mean I understand why they did, but it just seems off or something.

Enough with collector's edition and dlc announcements, you haven't even given us a firm date yet sony. If it comes too close to mass effect 2 I won't be able to get it right away, and I may have to choose between this and splinter cell....but a little advance warning would be nice

Announcing DLC before the game even has a set date is not acceptable.
I'll be buying this game, and if having to buy the collectors edition is going to score me free DLC then i'll buy that version.
This is just a marketing ploy to bring people to the collector's edition, and my argument is that DLC should be set at least 3 weeks after the game's release. (To give people the chance to finish the game and come back to it.)

I'm pretty freaking pumped for this game. This may be another import (like Dantes Inferno) if North America doesn't get a collectors edition. I can't wait to absorb myself in the Heavy Rain mythology. So many PS3 games I want next year!!

People can call me crazy, but I am buying a PS3 with my tax return this year specifically for this game. There are plenty of others I want, don't get me wrong, but Heavy Rain pushed me over the edge. So many cool and different things happening in this game, and I don't want to miss that.

Yeah, nothing draws me into a game more then a reaaaaaallllllly strong story or game universe that really sucks you in. Most recently for me it was with Fallout 3, Mass Effect, even Fable II I suppose. Just really rich game worlds and good stories. Really looking forward to picking this up.

I feel you man and now is a fantastic time to own one. You'll have a huge back catalogue of exclusives and all the stuff dropping next year. I'll make a few suggestions of games to pick up after you get your PS3. You'll just need to tell me what type of games you like ... I have a lot of the downloadable stuff as well which is another area the PS3 shines. The downloadable games are just so damn original and fascinating.

I don't think your crazy for wanting a PS3 mainly for one game. I had an 360 for a while until I sold it last Christmas and I'm trying to holding buying one just to play Mass Effect 2 next month. I know all about it ... if I had a gaming PC I'd pick it up on that but we just have a netbook and a couple of Macs.

No I don't because I didn't buy LBP GOTY and I'm not a Qore subscriber. I want in that beta so damn bad but unless there is some giveaway online (like fileplanet or usa today) I won't be in the beta. Thats another game super high on my list. It's like Little Big Planet meets Mario Kart.

Also in terms of game worlds and stories that just suck you in ... no games did it better this year than Assassins Creed 2 & Uncharted 2. I had trouble putting either game down before I completed them. So much better than their predocessors it's not even funny and those were great games in their own right. I wasn't really sucked into the story by Arkham Asylum, Borderlands, Fallout or modern warfare 2. Hopefully Heavy Rain sucks me into the mythology of the universe like AC2 & UC2 did.

Like you said, Markez, I'm totally all about the story in games - within reason. As long as the gameplay isn't terrible, that's what matters most to me. Sometimes not even so much the story itself, but the opportunity to explore a realistic and fantastic world - a la Fallout 3, where the story basically sucked but the exploration was just so immersive and gripping.

@ Johnny - Believe me, I have a pretty good list of PS3 games I'm ready for. I'm glad I waited to pick one up, since it had some meager offerings in the beginning. But now with the price drop and a pretty good back catalog, I'm stoked about getting one.

I did the same thing with the 360, actually, picking one up early in 2008. I'm glad I did, because then I had a huge list of great titles to work away at.

Cool man. If you ever have questions about a game you can always ask away and rest assured that I've probably played it and can give you an idea about what it's about. I can't tell you whether you'll like it (obviously) but can throw some pros and cons out there.

I still think that Little Big Planet is the best game on the console. Thats just my own tastes though,

Little Big Planet is the best game on the console? And I know you've said Burn Zombie Burn is "The best downloadable game this generation" I got it last night because it was on sale, and it's really damn fun, but I think it's a long stretch to call it the best this gen. But hey, to each his own.

I'm with Jerk Face. I'm really glad I waited to get the PS3. If I had gotten one earlier I probably would have felt some buyers remorse (like I did with the wii) after I had played one or two titles and had nothing to do on it. Not that I have a bunch of great games in the back catalog to play with, and a bunch of great games coming out very soon, I couldn't be happier with my PS3. And it's just in time, too, as the 360 seems to be going through a bit of a dry spell.

I like it. It does what it is suppose to. If you are already not interested in the game, what more can they ask? damn..

damn I hope the US gets that Collectors Edition....

Man I hate this DLC horse shit. I already got burned by Fallout 3, from now on when developpers announce pre release DLC, I'm just going to wait a year to buy the game, if a GOTY bundle get's released. But since Sony is publishing this movie (remember it's not a video game) this game will probably never get a discount. Just look at Heavenly Sword it's still full priced in NA.

Man, I don't know. I kind of want to agree with you, but the $90 I spent on Fallout 3 and the DLC packs I chose netted me over 200 hours of sheer enjoyment. I think that's worth the price of entry. It's all about buying the RIGHT content when it comes to DLC.

Point Lookout? Hell yes. Horse Armor? Probably not.
