Need for Speed: Shift speeds into iPhone App store

Keeping in line with previous Need for Speed entries on the iPhone, EA today announced the release of Need for Speed: Shift on Apple's handheld for $9.99. The game features 20 cars to maneuver through 18 tracks with your phone's tilt functionality, and even play with your (presumably wealthy) friends via Bluetooth or over Wi-Fi.

EA included a handful of impressive screens below, though we can't imagine the graphics (which are enhanced for iPhone 3GS and third-generation iPod touch) will do much to mask the frustration of clumsily trying to control a simulation-style racing game with a mobile phone. We've been burned before, folks.

So, I wonder if the Google Phone becomes a big hit... will there be a section for it, as well?

its called the nexus one, not the "google phone" idiot. but i know you like to catch on the artificial hype created by blogs about a plastic phone with android (as if we never saw this before) just like the droid was hyped up and forgotten, just so the next artificial hype of an iphone killer is created.

One could generalize all Android phones as "Google phones." I've got a Droid and I think it's pretty great. The games pretty much suck, though. I would love to see more higher-end games in the Android Market. It _should_ be possible, seeing as the Droid and iPhone 3GS are similarly spec'ed.

Still waiting for EA to publish a Crysis game on the IPhone, all their other IPs are going to it. : )

They're just gonna wait until OnLive comes around.

holy fuck those graphics are horrible. the iphone is so overrated. For comparison, look at the zune HDs game PGR: Ferrari edition. it is free, and has way better graphics.

It also has ads that cut out your music when starting it. FYI, I have a Zune HD 16 GB and a Zune 120.

it looks better than the DS, trust me, and even though that's not saying much it is a phone after all.

I quite liked need for speed underground for iphone. It was still a fun game.

Shame that people buy these games.

I bought this game.

I have yet to play it I loved the Undercover though.

I'm preoccupied with N.O.V.A. it is truly incredible
I have to say I've been waiting for a great FPS experience on a handheld, I've played PSP, DS, and iPod, and I have to say N.O.V.A. beats the rest.

Have you actually ever played a racing game on the iPhone? These are among the few that work really well with touch and tilt controls – and that included NfS Underground.

yeah, i found that jab to be pretty ignorant and uninformed as well.. especially if you look at toucharcade or pocketgamer, this game is getting some really good first looks, and the handling is one of the things people are impressed with most.

Please don't buy this. Get the far superior Firemint Real Racing or F1 2009 instead!

I've been playing this for the past day. It's pretty good! Some of the best graphics I've see on my 3GS!

Also it controls pretty good.

Anyone else find it ironic that this looks to be about 20 times better than the PSP version of NFS: Shift?

Why is that ironic? The iPod Touch has more powerful hardware. That's a fact.

Looks pretty good, almost mistook it for a wii game. Hell, it might be.

Honestly it looks a little better than what most developers are willing to do on the Wii.

Yeah, EA has been doing a much better job with their games on the iPhone than the Wii. Eh, I don't care anymore, I've pretty much just given up on my Wii, the console has long lost its fun.
