I'd have voted for BitF if it had been Part 5, simply for the "'Humbug-a.' 'Yup! Cheeseburger too!'" bit, but that's not the one that's up there.

Penny Arcade, I'd die if I saw that in a store. And the exquisite makes it that much funnier

Maybe you should expand your vocabulary and then perhaps the use of a common word wouldn't be so hilarious. Just sayin'.

And again, none of them made me laugh or even chuckle...

And, Penny Arcade could've done so much more with the Tony Hawk comment. If I could draw, I would've drawn a Tony Hawk doing all kinds of crazy ass shit on that Ride board and then he'd tell a kid to give it a shot. And the kid looks at him and is like "fuck you, I'm gonna go play outside".

Agreed.

Hell, they could have shown them sitting at their PC reading the report from Tony Hawk and just blankly staring and it would have been funnier.

Or perhaps have Tony Hawk outside of a local Gamestop telling everyone to try his game, then crying when no one walks out with it because they aren't giving it a fair chance. (All while a giant sign nearby shows the price of the game).

Or you could do a comic where Sonicspike is crying because his posts are so bad, and next to him is a sign that reads "Sonicspike makes dumb observations" in red bold font to further punctuate this already obvious gag.

I would've voted for Penny Arcade, but it didn't make any sense. The point of Tony Hawk's statement was to address the poor reviews and how they negatively affected sales.

I can't imagine someone thinking, "Yeah, I didn't like the game before I bought it, so then I bought it so I would like it even less. See, if I don't like it when I buy it, and still don't like it after playing it, it makes the reviewers right, which kinda disproves his point, even though I agree with him."

you know that many places had to BUY the game to rate it
G4 even talks about how they had to pay for it as none were sent out

PS if the game makers dont send out copys to get rated then even THEY know it sucks

Not really a fan of any this week.

Serious question here, so I've always gotten the vibe that Penny Arcade has generally been considered the most widely known / venerated videogame comics? Soooooo did it use to be funny at some point? I've been following the wrapup for quite awhile, and Penny Arcade, for me, has always been around the bottom of the barrel and consistently what I find to be one of the least funny every single week.

Penny Arcade is also one of the original video game webcomics. Take a look at their archives. They're making Doom, Tribes II, and John Romero jokes in the beginning. Arguably, most of the other webcomics on this Wrapup owe something to PA for kicking it all off.

Smart humour eh? Perhaps, but still doesn't make it funny. I think a lot of PA gets a free ride simply because it's PA. They seem to make a lot of "jokes" that foster a kinda "that is so true" response, rather than laughter. I enjoy reading it, but I think a better way to describe a lot of their work is wit rather than humour. Then again there some that are just poor. Take the most recent one for example (An actual, real film). I get it, but it just isn't funny. You can't really say it's clever either.

You didn't laugh at Ralph Maccio joke? Seriously. If you can't have a laugh at that strip then you have a bad sense of humor.

Every week people take this too seriously.

PA was funny back in the beginning, but it's all topical humor. Going through the archives now is more likely to elicit an "oh, I remember that happening" response than actual laughter. Well, for me anyway... In recent years through, with the industry becoming much more insular and controlling about insider drama and all the scandals becoming "more of the same" cash grabs, it doesn't really matter how you spin it, it's just not that funny anymore. All you can do is snidely comment on the fuck-uppery and hit publish.

Possibly the other part is that you can't do the same job five days a week for over a decade and keep giving a shit even when you're working on something you enjoy. Eating your favorite food five days a week would render it a joyless process pretty quickly. For a few years now I went to the site to read Tycho's overly-verbose blathering on the front page rather than the comic itself, but that's been hit or miss for years as well.

I'd say more than anything else, PA is a "tradition" of online gaming. Even if you don't understand why you hang mistletoe in a doorway or throw salt over your shoulder when you spill some, you might still do it out of habit. So in that respect, it is likely given a free pass by a lot of people.

PA is a cross between Joan Rivers, Def Comedy Jam, and Frasier. It drops too many names, is overly vulgar, and thinks it's smart, but really isn't.

Penny Arcade is my favorite webcomic for various reasons. One, the accompanying blog entries are usually hysterical and intelligently written. Second, I enjoy their usual brand of high-brow humor, and even if it isn't high-brow, I think it's fucking funny anyway. Third, after meeting the guys and watching their reality show I have a massive amount of respect for them. They love what they do, they love games, but most importantly they love their fans. They are very nice, very funny, and very humble. If they were dicks there would be no way that I would read the comic every week.

I'd classify xkcd more as "educated humor" than "smart humor". Most of the jokes are simple puns based on advanced scientific theories, gender and caste discrimination. Once you understand the principles he's basing the comic around, the humor is pretty simplistic and blunt. That's not to say he isn't intelligent or his webcomic is stupid, but that it's presented in a fairly simple manner.

Here for no apparent reason is a completely random and unrelated comic made by Kris Straub I felt was somehow appropriate to this discussion.

While not a dedicated games comic, xkcd has made me laugh loudly sometimes. I have laughed pretty hard at some of the previous Weekly Webcomic Wrapup featured comics before.

For example, I thought the Balance Patch comic was pretty good.

The newest one made me laugh like crazy, but that's because a couple weeks ago, me and my friends were talking how Brock should open his eyes on the final episode of the anime.

VGcats is sometimes very funny, but because he updates so infrequently I feel it puts more pressure on the current comic. If he updates two or three times a week it would be like: "hey, this one wasn't so great, but that one from Tuesday was awesome." Instead it's more like: "hey, this one was okay, but that one from a month and half a go was better."

I used to read them regularly, but updating once a month isn't enough to keep me interested, and super effective hasn't been that great lately.
