Alas, we've gone yet another decade without a single jetpack, hovercar, hoverpack or jetcar. We've got high hopes for unimaginable technological advancement in the 2010s -- for instance, if a recent advertisement for a bundle of LittleBigPlanet-branded PSP accessories that ran in MCV's latest "Digital Edition" is any indication, we're thinking that a new model of the old-school, UMD-equipped handheld might not be out of the question.
Proudly printed on the ad is a lineup of PSP models the accessories are compatible with -- including the PSP-4000. Now, this could just be a mistake on the ad designer's part, or it could be an accidental hint of things to come. Maybe not things as awesome as sky-based personal transportation, but hey -- we'll take what we can get.

20$ says it'll have a UMD.
50$ says it'll have bluetooth.
100$ says it'll have a second analog.
Sweet, now I can pay for a PSP-4000.

Their official reason is to make it so new games aren't made using a second analog, making them not playable or really hard to play on the all the previous psp models.
I'm personally hoping for a second analong on the psp2 around when ps4 comes out. It would be nice if the ps4 could have a built in psp2 dock. One can dream...

I know. In fact, It'll probably just be the PSP-1000 with a new coat of paint, considering that's how all of the PSP "upgrades" go.

If it's called a "PSP" it won't have a second analog nub. That would splinter the user base. The second nub will ONLY come when there's a true successor - a PSP2 perhaps.

They will not have a second analog until the next iteration of the platform (not just a removal of UMD like the PSP Go).. None of the new games would work on the old system.
The reason the UMD removal doesn't have a parallel to this is that all the games still work on the old system.. and any UMD game can end up on PSN for PSP Go digitally.. it's not fracturing the user base. 2nd analog would fracture the user base and render 50 million PSP's unable to play 2-analog requiring games...
Wait for PSP2...

where your theory fails is, the ps1 started with not analog sticks and later in its life cycle they released the dual shock 1 which added the 2 analog sticks. Also sony is releasing motion controls for the ps3, wouldn't that splinter the market just as much as adding a nub to the psp but sony seems fine with doing that. Another example is the dsi, which added the cameras, although there are a few games that take advantage of the new features of the dsi, you'll be just fine with a ds lite. The whole it will splinter the market is a weak arguement

GREENMC: your argument falls short. If you were a PS1 user with the original controller you could not play games later games that required the analog. In fact, the game would pause and say "Controller not plugged in."

anybody notice what is going on... apple refresh their product line up every year... new ipod touch, new ipod nanos, new iphones... seems like sony is following suit, atleast with the psp.
PSP 2000 was 2007
PSP 3000 was 2008
PSP Go was 2009
and now this is 2010
i think like cowtown said... the PSP2 will not see light of day until the PS4 is released... and perhaps with proper connectivity between the two.

@greenmc: The difference is that on the PS1 you could buy a DS1 and plug it into a lauch system and be able to use rumble and analog. If a second nub were added to the PSP-4000 any game which is relesed which needs it would be incompatible with all previous PSP hardware (1000s up to Go). A controller is an add-on, an new PSP is not. The only way that could work is if they release a USB nub attachment, which would be plain stupid.

There has to come a point when enough is enough. If this is true, than there will of been 4 PSP versions since its launch, and 5 if you count the Go.

But the DS makes actual improvements. The DS Lite is a major improvement over the DS, and the DSi is a major improvement over the DS Lite, despite what the naysayers think. I've owned a PSP-1000 and PSP-2000, and they both spent approximately the same amount of time in my cupboard.

The DS makes 'actual' improvements?
What like making it smaller, then making it bigger again? Right...
Oh no wait maybe you mean the gimmicky tacked on camera that even a 4 year old phone could take better pictures than...
Nintendo's motto is basically, 'If you can sell them the same thing more than once - do it'.

Bleh, I can't believe that they are going to go through with this and get another PSP out the door. Didn't they JUST release the PSPGo? I wonder if this version will cure cancer or promote world peace as well...

Another psp to make up for the disaster that is the Go? How about just market the slim and 3000 instead of confusing casual buyers even more.

"both are very successful"
Well, I guess if you count selling 294k in the biggest shopping month of the year when your competitor sells 1.7 million as "both successful" then yeah I guess they are.

You'd be surprised how many messages I get over Live/Psn from people here saying how much they love my comments.
Either way it makes no difference to me though, I'm not here to make virtual friends.

He is right. Check out some of the accessories next time you are in a store. They have to label whether it will work with the PSP-1000, 2000, 3000 or Go. Some work with the PSP-1000, and 2000, some work with the 2000, and 3000, etc... All of them look almost exactly the same (except the Go). However, the casual market would probably go for the PSP with the highest model number.

Tmac's completely right - you D-bags are just hating on him because that's what the cool kids are doing these days. Sony has fucked up marketing on the PSP from the beginning; and if they're releasing yet ANOTHER version of the handheld now, they're only further confusing the casual buyer.
Sony should be supporting the GO, at this point, even against the opposition they're facing with their fanbase. If you're going to make a risky move as a company and do something like drop the UMD drive and push digital distribution, at least have the balls to keep moving forward with it.

you're such a strange bunch of people, you psp haters. Sony has been making portable electronics for over 20 years now, I'm pretty sure they have a good idea of how the market works.
my guess on this PSP-4000 would be it's going to have an LED screen, be a tad smaller, and have some built in flash memory...I'll guess 8 gigs.

Maybe these redesigns are a way of fighting piracy? Every time a new PSP model is released it has a different hardware design so that it cant be hacked at first. Although I think the 3000 still hasn't been cracked yet.

but it can't run good homebrew and you need 5.03 to hack it.

3000s are easy to hack, but it's not as easy as 1000 and 2000 were, with the flashable firmware. 3000's require 2 restarts (one for chicHEN TIFF loader, and one for the 503-GENA loader), but then I just keep mine in sleepmode. Nothing I've thrown at mine doesn't work.

Well, I really don't have anything to say about the Go. I've never held/played with one. So I don't know if it's crap...But yes I'm talking about something totally new!
Something that's more powerful. Like the jump between the PS1 and PS2. Not like the jump between PS3 and the new Slim PS3. I don't want a redesign. I want a whole new product. That's the only reason I didn't buy the Go. I have a 2000 and see no reason to upgrade. Same goes for my DS Lite...no need for a DSi or DSi XL!!
If you think about it... Sony and Nintendo has been making the same handhelds for the past 4 and half years. It's time for the next gen of handhelds!
