It's been a while since we last heard about Croteam's upcoming, decidedly non-cartoony shooter, Serious Sam 3 -- fortunately, a recent Destructoid interview with the developer's awesomely-named CEO, Roman Ribaric, has broken the cycle of silence. According to Ribaric, development on Sam's next outing is still on track. "Serious Sam 3 is happening for sure," Ribaric said, later adding, "it is currently planned to be finished in 2010."
We would never wish an ill fate upon anyone with a name as powerful as Roman Ribaric, so we'd like to offer this friendly advice -- finish that stuff in the latter part of the year. We're not kidding. Firmly grasp the first three months of your 2010 calendar, pull down as hard as you possibly can, and then don't release your game during any of the months you're holding. You're welcome in advance.

This Serious Sam resurgence just makes me sad that the last Pain Killer was utter trash. We need more mindless challenge like these games, hope this turns out well (and I hope it sticks with the excellent cartoony style from SS2, HD was too realistic for its own good).

I hope they make SS3 like SS1. I didn't like SS2 that much as it seems to try to be like a regular shooter. The main draw of Serious Sam is the fact that you just run (backwards) and shoot, nothing else. No need for platforming, complex puzzles, platforming, platforming (Did I mention no platforming?). Run and shoot, simple.

I could take either versions. Platforming is fine, but jumping was too clunky in SS2 to be a worthwhile addition to the series. If they could improve it, I'm all for seeing it again as it made for some intense moments. I would like SS2's art style to return though, seriously underrated game when it came to visuals... definitely one of the best looking games on the original Xbox.

I'd be very surprised if this comes out early next year. They probably want to release Serious Sam First & Second Encounter HD first to build up the hype for SS3. SS3 will probably come out around the holidays, and hopefully not get lost in the shuffle.

Serious Sam looks like an angry Jeremy Piven. That's seriously scary.

they already ruined the serious sam series. im too reminiscent on my past to accept these new serious sam games. see what they did with super mario wii, that shit is sick. they kept the feeling of super mario bros, they need to keep that serious sam 1 style otherwise it wont be worth playing. i couldnt even finish serious sam II because it was just rediculous.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Skaterdude, but isn't that ridiculous feeling the entire point of Serious Sam? I mean, sure, they added in a different art style, but it was still Serious Sam. They were still throwing a huge ton of enemies at you all at once, with over-the-top weaponry to blow them all away, and you were constantly running (backwards) and gunning. It was Serious Sam through and through!
Granted, I still like the First Encounter best (I mean, come on! What boss even compares to Ung Zah), but they're all great games.

I loved First Encounter. Only played the demo for SS2, and the demo seemed different beyond just the art style. If the rest of the game is like the demo, then I agree with the OP - the demo felt more like a normal shooter than SS1. However, this conversation is making me want to go back and try SS2 again.

SSHD is out in January in Europe. I have waited since it was first on Joystiq for it. It was supposed to release on August 29th, then September 13th, then December, now January. I hope it STAYS at January. I don't know how much longer I can wait before dying.
